Browns Bell is the real deal COMMENT: What do you think of the Browns' top pick? Click-2-Listen By Carlos "Big C" Holmes Staff Writer Monday, May 26, 2008 When the Cleveland Browns moved up to select UNLV LB Beau Bell with the team's first pick in the fourth-round of the draft, fans weren't quite sure what the team was getting. There are mixed feelings about the pick, but for those fans who are still in the dark to the type of player Bell is, I turned to Perfect Competition, Inc. Founder and CEO Sean O'Brien to shed some light on the subject. O'Brien spent several months with Bell, who trained at Perfect Competition leading up to the draft and knows the player well. The 6-foot-1, 245-pound linebacker went there to work on his overall football skills and worked his buns off looking to impress NFL scouts. "Beau was brought into the program early in the draft process," O'Brien said. "He spent very little time with his family during the winter holidays and spent New Year's Day training preparing for the Senior Bowl. He's a very dedicated individual and believes in hard work." According O'Brien, Bell did a huge amount of work over the course of time between his final game and the draft — more so than any other athlete in the program. Things were going along just fine until Bell suffered a knee injury during Day 2 of practice at the Senior Bowl. However, that didn't stop him from making an impression on teams in Mobile. Many had anticipated Bell going higher in the draft, but still recovering from the knee injury a month later and unable to perform at a high-level during the Scouting Combine, caused his stock to tumble a bit. "The Browns got themselves a great player and Beau will out perform the location where he was drafted," O'Brien said. "Beau is a very powerful athlete and an imposing football player. Among the linebackers entering the draft, he was probably the most physical in that category." Bottom line: the Browns got a steal.
O'Brien summed the linebacker up in the nutshell: "Beau is a football player that loves to play the game. He's very humble and energetic. He will make the coaching staff in Cleveland very happy." Link

Good read Cal, thanks.
I hope Beau can really show his stuff this year. I'm sure there are plenty of reasons he dropped to the 4th round, but here's to hoping he can be a solid and productive player.

I'm excited about this guy, I love what I hear and read about him and he can seriously lay the wood. That in itself gives me chills of anticipation.

Have to be one hell of a hit to cost him $100M.

I've had a huge man crush on Beau for awhile. I was shocked he didn't go earlier than the 4th and was estatic and somewhat thankful for his injury that caused him to slip. This could be THE steal of the draft. I can't wait to see him grow and become what I think he can.

Kendrell Bell was a rookie 2nd round pick in 2001 6’1” 245 lb, had 83 tackles and 9 sacks his rookie season, but has had an inconsistent career.
It would be nice if the Browns could have similar luck with our Bell his rookie year.

Even though he was our first draft pick remember that he was a 4th rounder. Expectations should be very guarded IMO. If he contributes well as a special teamer that would be great! If participates more than a very limited role in our base defense color me surpised in 2008. This story is one of those that is a homer piece designed to inflate expectations. I hope he's a "rolling ball of butcher knives!!! though.

Bell is gonna be a keeper... I don't think expectations can be too high for a guy that will have to split time in a crowded ILB group. When called upon, he will make us proud to have drafted him with our first pick of the 2008 draft.

From Terry Pluto's Sunday column... Beau Bell looked good in practice and it would not be a shock if he pushed Andra Davis for playing time early in the season. D'Qwell Jackson had the best OTAs of the inside linebackers. Bell will compete with Leon Williams and Davis for time at the other inside linebacker spot. Plaid Nealer

What's good is so far I haven't heard a word about Bell having a problem learning the system and it might take him longer than we think to get on the field.
That was to be his biggest rap - book smarts. But Savage from the get go maintained that we liked his Football smarts.
I'm sure you remember how high I was on him early on into the draft seen. In my heart I've been more of a LB nut than an OL nut. Its just LB has taken less of a role over the years (not in our 3-4) as so has much of the Run since the WCO safe..high pct passes which everyone runs in some degree now...even us.
But he is my old school type of LB. One who can produce fear in the opposition. One who is a sure Tackler!! One who can Explode!
I can't wait to see him on the field

Yeah, I like how we're acquiring these sure-tacklers recently. We've drafted one in each of the last 3 years in DQ, EWright, and BBell. Let's not forget Wimbley who brings a certain level of intensity to his game. He is a physical, sideline-to-sideline player who is always in on the play. In the NFL, when little time is spent teaching fundamentals, is good to have a group who already bring that to their game.

Get outta here, I was locked onto him way earlier than you Just kidding....I don't the kid will have learning issues as some make it out to be..but if he's a football player(clitche) he'll grasp things ..I also saw footage on him in pass coverage..really wasn't that bad..

I don't know where I read it, but Bell has a learning disability of some kind.. For the life of me, I don't remember what type or how severe. But in the end, he played very well in college and he did graduate so that means that whatever his learning issue was, he's found or been taught ways to compensate..
I don't see an issue with this.

I liked the pick when we first made it, now Ive come to start loving that pick. Fans will really love Bell.
With the New regime starting in Cleveland. It is key that the Browns draft Taylor Mays. He fits our scheme and is one of the best safeties I have seen

I believe you are right. The thing with learning disabilities is that they are not tied to intelligence. There are multiple ways to help them learn.

For some reason this guy reminds me of Lofa Tatupu. Similar size, both big hitters, though Bell is faster. Hope he turns out to be as good of a player as Lofa is.

Yea, it's been noted.
From experience I can tell you all that most learning disabilities are tied to reading disabilities. People of exceptional intelligence will sometimes have problems focusing on the symbols that make up the written word. That is what causes them to fall behind in schooling and be labeled as one with a learning disability.
But many of them, out of the realm of "book learning", are extremely intelligent and have no problem grasping concepts and hands-on experiences.
If any of you remember, Dexter Manley, the "Secretary of Defense", who played nine seasons for and won 2 Superbowls with the Redskins, was illiterate. He couldn't read. Talk about a learning disablility. Still he could play football as evidenced by his 97.5 sacks in his eleven year career. (103.5 if you count the ones he had before sacks became a statistic). He had 18.5 in 1986 when he was voted to the ProBowl. wiki
I'm not worried about Beau Bell so far as having a learining disability. I'm believing that it will have little to no effect regarding his ability to grasp the scheme and be a productive player.
I say that not because he's one of our guys, but because of the experience I've had with those who have "learning disabilities".

Learning disability or not, how many football players do you hear that you think "boy, that guy sure is intelligent!" Heck, most of the time I hear them speak, I think "how does that guy dress himself in the morning?"
The key is that they all know at least one thing: football. You don't have to have outstanding reading comprehension to be a good football player (for the most part), especially if you have good instincts, which is particularly important at the LB position.
I'm more worried about his athletic ability and his football prowess. If he has those things, he'll be fine, regardless of a learning disability.
