http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=txbrownsshea&prov=st&type=lgnsCLEVELAND (TICKER) —Tight end Aaron Shea officially announced his retirement from the Cleveland Browns on Friday. Shea, 31, who was selected 110th overall in 2000, caught 97 passes for 851 yards and seven touchdowns in 65 games - 30 starts - for Cleveland from 2000-2005. “My back just could not do it,” Shea told ESPN Radio 850. “Today, I decided to retire. As much as I wanted to come back and play in a Browns’ uniform, holding my girls and stuff like that is just a little more important.” A native of Ottawa, Illinois, Shea missed both the 2006 and 2007 seasons with back injuries. “I’m going to see three doctors out in California,” Shea said. “I’m going to see what they have to say so I can get this figured out and live a pain-free life.” ----- I know that most of us didn't care all that much for him.....but he was a Cleveland Brown and I wish him all the best. (to be honest, I'd forgotten about him)

Hope he gets his back issue taken care of and can live that pain free life he wants. He was a hard worker, not the most talented TE, but gave effort each and every play, which I liked seeing. Best of luck to him.
I don't think we traded him (but we could have), however he was with SD in 06, not sure about 07, but I am sure he wasn't on our IR.
My guess is that we signed him to one of those 'one day' contracts so he could retire a Cleveland Brown.
Statistics are like a bikini; what they show is interesting, but what they hide is vital. Drive for show (1st round), Putt for dough (rest of draft).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aaron_Shea Aaron T. Shea (born December 5, 1976 in Ottawa, Illinois) is a former American football tight end of the National Football League. He was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the fourth round of the 2000 NFL Draft. He played collegiately at Michigan.
Shea also played for the San Diego Chargers.
Contents [hide] 1 Early years 2 College career 3 Professional career 3.1 Cleveland Browns 3.2 San Diego Chargers 3.3 Retirement 4 Personal
[edit] Early years Shea attended Ottawa High School in Ottawa, Illinois and was a letterman in football. In football, he won All-State honors.
[edit] College career Shea attended the University of Michigan where he played fullback and tight end.
[edit] Professional career
[edit] Cleveland Browns He was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the fourth round (110th overall) of the 2000 NFL Draft and went on to play six season for Cleveland. During his time there, he caught 97 passes for 851 yards and seven touchdowns. He fumbled only once in his career - during his rookie season in 2000.
[edit] San Diego Chargers As a free agent in the 2006 offseason a handful of teams were reportedly interested in Shea, including the Houston Texans, Pittsburgh Steelers, San Diego Chargers San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks. On March 17, Shea signed a three-year contract with San Diego. A back injury bothered him throughout the preseason and forced him to miss the team's first three regular season contests. On September 26, he was placed on season-ending injured reserve.
Shea was released after just one season in San Diego on March 2, 2007.
[edit] Retirement In June, the Cleveland Plain-Dealer reported Shea was receiving interest from his former team, the Cleveland Browns. However, Shea remained unsigned as the 2007 season began.
In May 2008, Shea officially retired from the NFL.
[edit] Personal Shea married the former Caitlin Gibbons (who is seventh grade teacher at Center Middle School) in Ireland on June 21, 2003. They have two daughters, Cadence and Ireland

I remember when he left us for San Diego. First he said he thought it was best he leave because of the situation with Winslow. Then he signed behind the best tight end in football. Then he said he wanted to see the country. Cause that is so hard to do when you play professional football.

Shea was a good player, not a great player, but a lunchbox, every down every play kind of guy. The kind of guy you could root for.
Happy retirement Shea. Here's to good health in the future.

He never went to SFran, but he's been gone for years.
The Chargers signed him as an UFA in 2006 from us then released him a year later.....he never played a down for anyone but the Browns.

Shea doesn't even come close to losing Holly.
Shea had slim to no odds on making this teams final roster.

As you can see I was replying to a specific poster who stated this:

I see no smilie in your response so I also don't understand the Cool response to my brief statement?
Of course in reading further it seems that Shea never was on our roster to retire from the Browns and I cannot remember ever seeing "Shea" as a mental note to over the times I browsed through the roster usually looking up Pittman or Purcell - guys of that nature. But I think Shea would have slapped me in the face.
So in that view yeah pretty hard to make the roster when you are not on it in the first place
But the train of thought of the post was not of my making...just responding to a reply I read.

Yes, I saw that fine. I read the entire thread.

I took it as him not knowing that Shea hasn't been on the roster for over 2 years.

Not a cool response, just incredulous.

Understood....but what made me respond incredulously (not in a cool fashion) was how many people kept posting about his whereabouts, and this never ceases to amaze me. You're on the internet! If you don't know something you can find it out in 2.7 seconds in most cases. Your posting was made after responses were already given as to how he wasn't on the team anymore, and you talked of him not making the final roster.....
Incredulous, not cool.

Well seeing since the last team Shea stepped on the field for was the Browns is probably why he retired a Brown. Anyways no matter what hope he recovers enough to have a normal life. I know somewhat of what he speaks. Good luck Aaron.

My first thought was that he left Cleveland and went to San Fran also. Maybe we are thinking of another TE.

I know Bryant, but I thought for sure that San Fran signed one of the Browns TEs from the earlier teams.
I still think its Shea. Maybe he didnt make the team and got signed by San Diego. Maybe its not on his career stats because he wasnt on San Frans roster during the regular season at any time, but was on San Diegos IR.
Who are some of the other TEs from that time besides Dudley?

Those years were so miserable I've tried to erase the memories but wasn't Shea always hurt or am I thinking of somebody else? I remember him as Harry Holt 2.0.

I don't recall if Shea was "always hurt" I know the last year he was working through the whole back thing.( you were probably thinking of Suggs) I also know he played hard, whether it was TE or FB (he was that hybrid H-back thing) once he had the ball he would try to run over the tackler . If I recall he had speed too, that is until the new breed of TE made there presence truly known.

yes, Shea was always hurt and landed on the IR almost every season that I can remember.
rookie season his healthiest: played in 15 games. 01 a starter: 12 games - mixed with injury ended on IR 02 a starter: 7 games - mixed with injury ended on IR 03 a starter: 4 games - mixed with injury ended on IR Never had a 16 game year and he was always on special team also so he was not benched or made inactive. Rookie year and 04 both with the Browns he appeared in 15 games and started in 8. But in 04 he started in just 8 cause of small injuries.
Actually Suggs was healthier...lol

My first thought when thinking of Shea was always dropping the go-ahead TD against Baltimore, then having Reed return it a billion yards for the clinching score.
A microcosm of those Browns teams.
LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

Shea partially got injured so much because the Browns tried to use him in an H-back role - IIRC, that was the cause of several of his season-ending injuries.

I was never a big Shea fan, especailly when he tried to play as a blocking back and would always run by the first would be tackler. But in his defense in that Baltimore game, Ray Lewis was draped all over him in the end zone and it should have been called pass interferance, before it bounced off Sheas chest.
