Rosenhaus: Winslow to Attend Mini-Camp

Drew Rosenhaus By Barry McBride

Posted May 21, 2008

Kellen Winslow's agent declares that his client will attend camp, and lectures the media for creating a "big to-do" over Winslow's absence. What's your reaction? Let us know in the OBR Watercooler!

Kellen Winslow Jr's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, says that his client will be attending the June mini-camp in Cleveland, and will be attending training camp.

Rosenhaus, appearing on Sprint's Youtube channel, declared that Winslow would not miss any of the full camps which follow the OTAs (Organized team activities).

"These are voluntary activities.", Rosenhaus said on the short video. "They are not mandatory, and a player has a right to train on his own. Kellen is coming off of an off-season knee surgery, and he is doing his rehabilitation and his training with a very fine trainer in his hometown of San Diego.

He will be at the Browns mandatory mini-camp and he will be at the mandatory training camp."

Rosenhaus also took some of his time to lecture the Cleveland media a bit.

"What's the big to-do? Guys have the opportunity to choose whether they want to go to these voluntary functions, and there shouldn't be so much scrutiny on players who choose to work out on their own."

It should probably be noted that players missing OTAs are relatively rare, and that Rosenhaus himself created some of the confusion with his responses to questions from the News-Herald's Jeff Schudel last February.

Rosenhaus' comments should be re-assuring to Browns fans however:

"Kellen's going to be ready to go and everything should be just fine with him", the agent concluded, "We're looking forward to him getting back to Cleveland for the mandatory mini-camp later on this month".

Discussion of Rosenhaus' remarks in the OBR Watercooler

I’ve been saying this sense the start of all these rumors….I’m so glad one of the two finally spoke up.

i have a hard time believing that Rosenhaus would pass up the opportunity to push, or at least hint at, a new contract...

IMO, his total disregard for the writers' pot-stirring tells me that they (he and K2) are already having/have had some negotiations with Savage behind the scenes, and they're happy with the team's position...

I think RAC explained it best in one of his pressers. Winslow just put it out there to see if the Browns would bite. They didn't... so it's back to work.

I for one, never thought that he wouldn't attend and participate in mandatory camps.. Every single Cleveland area print reporter has questioned it but I haven't..

Anyway., not that I think he's lying about this but you have to remember, Rosenhaus is the same agent that convinced Buffalo that Willis McGahee would be ready for the start of his first season...

You see? People got there panties all in a twist over nothing.

The media in Cleveland just runs away with these things. Especially a couple Plain Dealer reporters that we all know. Very good news indeed.

I look for K2 to have another big year in 08.…He himself sets his goals pretty high.
The goals he set before the 07 season where pretty lofty 1,200 yards receiving (1,106 actual)
Receptions 90 (82 actual)…..TD’s he only had 5, but he came pretty close with the other goals and when you have players like Edwards who caught 16 of the 29 TD passes DA threw that leaves less then half of the TD’s to the rest of the team….so I can’t complain or fault K2 for falling a bit short in that department.
56 of his 82 receptions went for a 1st down or a TD.
Comparable with
JJ…Mr. 1st down who had 34 1st downs or TD’s out of 50 receptions in 07.

I think if he has another big season in 08, that the Browns will think about redoing his contract.

K2 may not play as long as his HOF father, but he still has a chance to have a HOF career and I know it’s too early to be mentioning HOF in the same sentence, but I would like to see him go in as a Brown if he does in fact have a HOF career.
He is a big reason why Edwards and other WR will have a big year, because you must take a safety out of coverage / help on a WR to cover him.

I recently had some time on my hands and took another look at last seasons games.
And keyed in on K2’s game…..The thing that stuck out was his run blocking.
Now please don’t miss quote me on this one…..It showed that he had improved in that area of his game and I know he also prides himself on improving in that category.
He will never be the stud blocker like Hieden, but I think he understands positioning and leverage a little better…..I took a look back at some 06 games to confirm my assumption and even though he was not always successful in 07 on every play…..There was IMO a marked improvement.

Gee, I hate it when I'm right. I guess my head wasn't too far in the sand. Just enough to protect me from when the sky starts falling.

It'll be funny to see everyone backpedal on this and say "oh, I knew he wouldn't hold-out". He wasn't going to hold-out! He has 3 years left on his deal. He's got at least one more year to prove he deserves a new contract. Kellen and Drew are smart enough to realize that. But everyone took all these signs as something ominous that we must prepare for. Like I said, 1+1 does not equal 3, no matter how you slice it. I'm glad Drew spoke up and put this thing to bed.

The problem isn’t so much a local one, because we all know the local medias track record, but the rest of the NFL’s fans and media except it as fact. I post on another Board where there are posters from every team and I was amazed at some of the opinions….of course I had to set them straight, but they basically made him into Chad Johnson…..and more….. calling him lazy
With a bad work ethic.
Typical with the Media though if there is little news to report…they start making news out of nothing.

What really drove me crazy was that the Associated Press picked up on it and stated in the article "According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer..." And that article was picked up by every major sports media outlet nationwide. So yeah, it started with the PD but then it became this huge story that spread around the country and people think he's being just like Chad Johnson and that wasn't the case at all. Why? All because of Mary Kay Cabot and her ability to play connect the dots with assumptions and unrelated facts. I'm not a big fan of his, but I definitely don't blame Drew in the least for blasting the Cleveland media.

I feel a little better about this. I was getting concerned that we might have a holdout with KW2...and we still might, but we need the guy.
I think Winslow losing his first two years only threw more gasoline on his competitive fire. He wants to play FOOTBALL.

Good news.

If he has a season even close to last year, a new contract next year would be reasonable, IMO. Especially if he stays healthy.

CAN HE PLAY DB?

Hes a freakin superhero, he could play DB while coaching the defense while doing a one-handed hand stand jumping with the other hand picking it off with his feet and one handed hopping down to the end-zone.

Just cant ride a motorcycle

What's healthy though? Has he missed a game since he's come back? No

Now we don't know how long that could possibly last, but the dude's a warrior. He's the type of guy where the coaches tell him he can't play, he doesn't take himself out unless he tears an ACL and gets a staph infection from the Cleveland Clinic.............

Exactly. HE will get his deal when this contract is about to expire.

With the New regime starting in Cleveland. It is key that the Browns draft Taylor Mays. He fits our scheme and is one of the best safeties I have seen

Well, depending on the type of season he has in '08, I could see them doing something for him next year. But they also have Sean Jones and possibly Braylon to re-up as well. It'll be interesting to see how these contract extensions shake out given what we know about the CBA now. I hope it all ends well for us and for these players. If they keep playing the way they have, they deserve everything they get.

I don't see Savage and Lerner letting dollars stand in the way.. When the time is right, they'll act accordingly. I believe that.

Agreed, to me this talk is very high schoolish, somebody is tring to brew something up to juice up the off-season, childish also comes to mind. and the more we comment on this the more things get out of wack, the more rumors fly and whenever media talks about someone wanting thier contract reworked it always gives the player the black eye, or makes them seem greedy, sure it was said, but there was valuble information left out...as always.....Also did anywhere in that artical has it touched base on Kellens football camp for kids...and what he has done for this community......oh ya thats not exciting...never mind.....

And what do you know, ESPN is chiming in w/ a negative spin . . .

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3407041

Winslow nowhere to be found during Browns' voluntary workouts

Two weeks into their organized team activities, Browns coach Romeo Crennel again said on Wednesday that he hasn't heard from Winslow and doesn't know why he's not with the team.

The three weeks of OTAs are not mandatory. However, players usually report so they can take part in conditioning drills and team meetings or rehab injuries.

In a video posted on YouTube, Winslow's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said his client will be at minicamp in June and training camp in July. He said Winslow, who underwent offseason knee surgery, was rehabbing in his hometown of San Diego. A phone message left for Rosenhaus was not returned.

Winslow has made it clear that he wants the Browns to redo his contract.

Winslow, who missed most of his first two seasons in the league with injuries, has three more years left on a contract that the Browns restructured after he missed an entire year following a motorcycle accident.

I say forget the motorcycle deal...you can only hammer a person so long.

I think Winslow deserves more. Now, that said, Savage has stated we are tapped out on available cash for contract bonus money.

I think he has had a honest talk with Rosenhaus and Kellen and told them there isn't any cash to do anything this year but he is A#1 priority next year. Rosenhaus isn't a dummy. He can look at what we have signed and committed. He knows you can't squeeze blood from a turnip.

I don't see any holdout at any point this year....next year is when they will hold if we don't get down to business with them.

This year, about the only thing he can do is demand a trade. I don't think they want that.

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

What I don't like.

Is it is so obvious on who is calling the shots regarding KW2 actions...positive or negative.

The fact is KW2 is now working for Rosenhaus Instead of Rosenhaus working for KW2.

Agents...the ruination of organized professional sports. This ties in directly with the CBA thread. The owners better get an agreement fixed or else the Agents will take over the game. The ruination of every Sport Empire in past history!
