Kenny Wright's legal issue is second since season ended
Browns' defensive back could face suspension, but remains on roster

By Marla Ridenour

Browns defensive back Kenny Wright's April 3 arrest in Pearland, Texas, was not his first offseason brush with the law.

Brazoria County (Texas) District Attorney Jeri Yenne said Tuesday that Wright already had a marijuana'-possession charge pending when he was picked up last month in Pearland, a Houston suburb.

Wright was charged March 1 with Class B misdemeanor possession, which is less than two ounces. He was stopped driving 51 mph in a 35 mph zone, and a plastic bag of marijuana was found in his trunk. A hearing is scheduled for June 27.

On April 3, Wright was arrested for a disturbance outside a police station after a quarter-mile foot chase and charged with unlawful restraint, evading arrest and possession of marijuana. The unlawful-restraint charge is a Class A misdemeanor, and the others are Class B. A court date has not been set in that case.

At rookie minicamp May 2, General Manager Phil Savage said that Wright remained on the team and that the Browns had been in touch with the league about Wright. Wright has played for five teams in his nine-year NFL career.

Asked Tuesday to comment on the prior incident via e-mail, Savage said: ''Yes, we're aware of his situation. There is nothing else to report at this time.''

An NFL spokesman would not comment on whether Wright would face sanctions under the league's substance-abuse policy, saying that was ''premature,'' because he has only been charged.

Players began offseason training activities Tuesday, and the first session open to the media is Wednesday.

On the final depth chart of 2007, Wright was listed as the backup to rookie Eric Wright at right cornerback. Kenny Wright played in only seven games last season with one start and was inactive for seven games. He finished with three tackles, a quarterback pressure and three special-teams tackles.

The Browns are very thin in the secondary after starting cornerback Leigh Bodden was sent to the Detroit Lions in a trade for defensive lineman Shaun Rogers. Late-October pickup Ricardo Colclough departed for the Carolina Panthers in free agency, and no defensive backs were selected in the draft. Daven Holly and Brandon McDonald are expected to compete for Bodden's spot.

Okay, the obvious question is 'How come we never heard about the first arrest for possession of marijuana until now?' And then, why is he still on our roster? I think it's safe to say, whether by suspension or outright release, K Wright will not be with us in the fall.

I agree he won't be with the team in the fall. I don't think Phil and Romeo are the type to put up with arrests for any reason, especially drug arrests.

I would say that it's not so odd that we, the fans, weren't aware of it, but if it's the Browns that weren't aware of it, That would surprise me.

As for why he's still on the team, I'd have to ask, has he been convicted or pleaded guilty to any charges yet? I don't think he has.. so cutting him lose at this time seems a bit premature..

Could he be gone by the June 1st cutdown? Maybe that's what they are waiting for...

My guess is he won't be playing for the Browns, or anyone else this year.

Cleveland Browns terminate contract of Kenny Wright
by Mary Kay Cabot, Plain Dealer Reporter Wednesday May 14, 2008, 4:06 PM
Cornerback Kenny Wright was released by the Browns today at 4 p.m. following his arrest April 3 in Pearland, Texas after a disturbance in a police parking lot.

The Browns declined to comment on Wright's situation and his agent, Robert Fayne, did not immediately return a phone call. Wright was charged with unlawful restraint, evading arrest and possession of marijuana.

Wright, a 10-year pro, played in only seven games last season with one start. He was inactive for seven games and made three tackles.

Wright's arrest was his second of the off-season. He was also charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana in March after being stopped for speeding. The Browns are thin at backup cornerback, but were not about to put up with such antics from a backup who barely plays.

Good, I like it. Send the message quickly. (I'm sad it came to this for him but I'm glad the team took a strong stand without putzing around)

My first thought was...Why were the cops looking in the trunk when he was pulled over for speeding? I have never had that happen to me when speeding. I pulled over, got my ticket, and went on my way.

Regardless of the above statement; its still a shame to see young talented guys not keeping themselves out of the news for crimes.

You don't need to spell it out for me. I knew the answer, but no one else brought it up so I figured I would.

Hey thanks for informing me, but remember the Browns were the laughing stock of the NFL until this past season. I'm not knocking your team, but remember you guys were 4-12 not too long ago. Until you win your division, zip it. (Which will probably be this year anyway)

Actually the Cardinals or maybe even the Bengals have been the laughing stock of the NFL for years now with the Chiefs being a close 3rd

For years? The Chiefs have had one 4-12 season since the 80's and that was this past season. We've been above .500 for most of the last 20 years. How are the Chiefs in the top of the league in terms of "laughing stock" for years? We're now going through a rebuild mold much like the Browns did when Romeo and Savage took over. We'll have a couple down years before we start winning consistently again.

I understand your trying to rip on the Chiefs, but you can at least be a little accurate when attempting to do so. I will refrain from talking smack on the Browns cause this is not the smack shack. Both franchises have been unsuccessful in the playoffs so until you guys win a playoff game, zip it.

And there is really no smack for you to try to say so I undertstand what you're saying. Both teams haven't had a championship in awhile. Do you like the Royals too ? They are terrible as well
