Cleveland increasing surveillance cameras on trains, buses
April 28, 2008 09:59 EDT

CLEVELAND (AP) -- More and more, trains and bus riders in the Cleveland area are being watched.

The Regional Transit Authority is working toward installing cameras on all 700 of its buses. Rapid trains are next, with most to be equipped by the end of the year.

The chief of the RTA's police force, John Joyce, says the cameras have led to arrests for everything from felonious assault to arson. He says they've also acted as deterrent.

According to Greg Hull of the American Public Transportation Association, improved technology and cheaper prices have made it easier for transit agencies across the country to add cameras.

The availability of Homeland Security grants and other federal money has also contributed to the recent, more widespread use of the cameras.

Ahh the all knowing eye.

Personally, even though it is infringing on privacy, you really don't have privacy in public spaces. And if I'm the victim of a crime and a camera can help catch and convict someone, I'm fine with it. I'm not doing anything wrong to be worried about cameras.

Now if they start using them to nitpick and ticket people for the most minor of offenses, then there's issues.

It isn't even an infringement on someone's privacy at all.

Like you said, there isn't privacy in public spaces, but on top of that you are in a vehicle owned and provided by the city/public for the city/public welfare.... I believe that it is well within the city's rights to put them there.

Either way, no big deal... nice to see the city at least trying to make things better.
