NOW HIRING--With the success the Browns defense has had under its second season in a 3-4 system, defensive coordinator Todd Grantham has been mentioned in some circles as a candidate for the soon-to-be head coaching vacancy at Michigan State.

Crennel said Monday the Spartans do not need permission to talk to Grantham since it's a college opening and not another NFL spot.

"I don't think it's on me to say whether they've contacted him or not, it's their job," Crennel said. "If they want to make an announcement they can make it.

"He's good football coach. He's good for us and I like him a lot. It will depend on what he wants for his future and his aspirations. That becomes a big part of it."

Based on Romeo's comments, it sounds like the report is real.

I wonder what amount the defense's success can be attributed to Crennel compared to Grantham. If he leaves I hope we can find a coordinator with the same passion.

That, IMO is the Million dollar question. I also agree with you regarding Todd's fire and intensity at least on game day.

below in bold shows he once worked for Michigan in the past

[edit] College Football
Grantham spent six seasons (1990-95) at his alma mater, Virginia Tech, the final two as defensive line coach. In 1995, the Hokies ranked first nationally in rushing defense, fifth in scoring defense and 10th in total defense. Virginia Tech racked up 50 sacks en route to the Big East title and a Sugar Bowl triumph over Texas. Grantham coached defensive ends and inside linebackers from 1990-91 and defensive tackles from 1992-93.

Grantham then served three seasons as the defensive line coach at Michigan State (1996-98). He added the title of assistant head coach in his final season in East Lansing in 1998. Michigan State ranked 19th in total defense in 1996 and 13th in 1997, making consecutive bowl trips. (Credit to ClevelandBrowns.com)

I saw this rumour over on the other board last week but since the poster had no source decided it was qualified to be posted.

There are other rumours also going around re the HC job at MSU as follows from your favourite site.

SHURMUR THE BEST MAN FOR MSU?

Amid rumors that former 49ers and Lions coach Steve Mariucci is quietly in the mix for the Michigan State job, a league source with no dog in the race (or horse in the hunt) has expressed to us in no uncertain terms that, in his view, Eagles quarterbacks coach Pat Shurmur is the better man for the job.

"This guy deserves the job," the source said. "It is his dream job."

Shurmur was an All-Big 10 center at Michigan State, and a team captain. His extensive NFL experience should be very helpful, since we've heard that the Spartans are looking for a guy who will be in a position to demonstrate an ability to get players ready for -- and placed in -- the NFL.

And we're amazed that more schools haven't figured out that kids might be more inclined to go to schools that care about helping them land in the NFL.

Not to give too much credit to Roger Brown, but he has been reporting this for probably two weeks or so. That probably means that it is false.

Coaching at MSU is one of the worst jobs in the business. You're competing against Michigan, Notre Dame and Ohio State for recruits....guess who usually comes in 4th? There was a great interview with Nick Saban on this topic when he left for LSU.

If he plans on being an NFL Head coach....Imo....He`ll be better off staying in Cleveland for another season or 2..3..4...Then become the H.C off the Browns...

I've been hearing this for a week now. I really, really hope he doesn't go. I mean, I wish him the best, but I'd hate to lose the guy. I love his intensity. Between him and Crennel, this D has taken a turn for the best. Well disciplined. I mean just look at the rash of injuries. We basically have 5th, 6th, and 7th strings corners shutting down passing attacks. You can plug in a body and they can still play admirably.

They've been throwing Grantham's name into the mix since they first announced J.L. Smith was leaving. Here is the first article about the coaching search. Detroit News

Since then, Mariucci, and Davis are out, so it's pretty much down to Shurmur or Grantham. There are several reporters here who are positive it will be Grantham, but I'm really hoping it will be Shurmur.

Latest local article: Sports insiders

While I don't want Grantham to leave us just yet, if it happens, it happens. Not a darn thing anyone can do about it.. And frankly, I wish him well...

Todd I think has the right attitude, skills and ability to someday become an NFL Head Coach. If that's what he wants, then he's probably better off staying right here.. If he aspires to be a College HC, then I guess the decision is easy..

Even though I'd be sad to see him go, if he does go, we'll find someone to replace him. And, let's not forget, RAC is no slouch when it comes to planning defenses.

So unless these search-team members have a surprise candidate with a proven track record -- someone most of us aren't seriously considering right now -- they need to make their decision before recruiting picks up in a couple weeks.

I guess in 2 weeks time the decision should be made, then. I think it's Shurmur or a person not even mentioned yet. JMHO

A Lansing television station reported that Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Todd Grantham is acting and sounding like someone who believes he's going to get the MSU job.

I hope it was the one retracted instead of Kelly by the media outlet.

to the Romeo reminders,
yes we do still have Romeo who is a proven D guru. (thank heavens and thanks for the reminder). My fear hear is that RAC might be a bit over his head with this whole head coaching thing. His job in Cleveland is a very different beast. Right now I don't know if it would be in his or the teams best interest with him handling both duties. We would definetely need to bring someone else in.

Todd, please stay! nobody rocks that orange sweatshirt like you buddy

If he does leave, whats the chances RAC just takes over the D?

Hopefully no chance. I would hate to lose him before we really get to see what he can make this defense do... but if you look at it another way, with Wimbley, DQ, Davis, Jones, Bodden, Poole.... coming to Cleveland to be the DC is going to look like a fairly attractive job so finding good interested candidates shouldn't be a problem

dawglover,
Thanks for saying that because anyone who even half looks at football knowst that M.Tucker (DB Coach) is the real success behind Grantham!! Without him coaching up those peices/parts of DBs, this Defense would be in HUGE trouble!! And this week will determine what they can do!

Nothing wrong with these guys being older, with age comes experience. They seem to have quite a bit of experience. Which one would you prefer? Trott seems to have more experience at DC, but Haluchak has been with more NFL teams.

As much as I would hate to see it happen, I actually thought about this yesterday. It would not surprise me at all if he leaves for a head coaching job. And, I think he deserves it. I think he has done a great job with our defense. I hope he doesn't go, but if he does, I hope he succeeds. And I'm sure he will.

Well you posted the experienced candidates to possibly replace TG, if needed, and now you post the inexperienced. Although he's been with the team gaining on two seasons and he should have a very good grasp on the system. So maybe the younger guy deserves the oppurtunity to step up? We're seeing more and more younger coaches in sports. Plus, he is the DB's coach and they have been playing great, when healthy, and keeping the ship afloat with backups. Even Ralphie boy is starting to show some improvement and that's got to be the coaching, at least in part, the players also deserve credit. Hopefully this is a moot discussion and TG will remain a DC for CB.

[color:"orange"]Out of the two experienced Asst. D coaches I would say Haluchack as he has had more defensive input probably in the 3-4 being the LB coach with mega experience.

As for me than flip flopping to the younger Mel well the poster asked what about Mel? And I obliged. As mentioned possibly it will come down to who the NFL considered an up n comer and we have to keep him here???

But best thing would be keep Grantham here. But he got face and press time after the Falcon game and looked even surprised at his new found notoriety. I just wish he would come here for a goal and achieve it...SB! Then take a head coach job somewhere. But look at it like it would be us...he's making 100grand+ now College is a little more Homey atmosphere and Mil$$. He's got to take that just like Saban did and Butch did. Although HC in the NFL would be faster if he stays here and wins! All comes down to what his goals are...What is best for his family?

Lansing is a good college town to bring up a kid.
