Last week, NFLPA records showed that Cleveland Browns receiver Braylon Edwards had no agent.
While doing research for some Internet hack's midweek column for SportingNews.com, we've learned that Edwards officially has hired Tom Condon of CAA to handle his contract.
Edwards' rookie deal was negotiated by Lamont Smith and Peter Schaffer of All Pro Sports and Entertainment. Condon will not be eligible for a fee until Edwards inks a new deal. He currently is signed through 2009.
As noted, per the SportingNews, Edwards has hired Tom Condon's agency (CAA) to represent him.
First it's Winslow and Rosenhaus, and now it's going to be Edwards and Condon.
After shelling out money to our TE, our RB, our QB, and some high-end free agents, it won't be long before Edwards' new contract demands are on the front page.
8/11/2005: Signed a five-year, $40 million contract. The deal included a $6.5 million signing bonus and contains $18.5 million in total guarantees. 2008: $3.35 million, 2009: $4.55 million, 2010: Free Agent

It's probably time to work on a new deal. Browns WR Braylon Edwards had a monster year in 2007, which was his third season in the NFL. Edwards started all 16 games and set career-highs in catches (80), yards (1,289) and touchdowns (16). He was among the league leaders in all categories.

The cost of "doin' bidniss," I guess.
After the kind of year these guys (BE, K2, DA, JL) had in '07, it really was just a matter of time....
Well, Phil ( ...and to a slighty lesser degree, Trip McCracken- )... it's like James Brown ("hah! Huuunh!") once said-
"Pay the cost to be the boss..."
I can remember a time, not so long ago, that we didn't have these kinds of headaches-
-and I'll gladly take these headaches over the 4-12 kind of headaches we were so accustomed to suffering....
These boys (*ahem*- Young Men... forgive me- I'm old...) played their God-gifted azzes off for us. I don't really have a problem with paying them commensurate $ with league-leaders on other 10-6 teams around the league.
If we've really turned the corner, and are on our way to becoming an NFL power, this is the kind of news we'll be hearing more of... instead of the endless reports of:
who's leaving (with quotes about what a "hole" Cleveland is-)?
who got stabbed/arrested/embarrased their Family's Name?
who's our best pick at the #1 or #3 draft spot?
If there's such a thing as a "good headache," this might be it.
Be smart with the money,
pay them enough to stay productive,
... and start measuring yourself for a new ring.
I've NEVER had a problem with paying players for production... and I never will. What bothers me is paying players to underachieve (Kevin Johnson, Dennis Northcutt, William Green...) or to lounge in a sitzbath (Courtney Brown, Lee Suggs) from season to endlessly disappointing season.
Truth be told- it's kinda nice, as a Browns fan, to have something new to deadbate about in the offseason....

I'm sorry contracts are contracts and if they have a poor year this year would they renegotiate a new contract at a discount for next year. Browns fans are funny sometimes, after one decent season ( note I said decent not outstanding) we all of a sudden have the best players in the NFL.

So we give all these guys new contracts now and then we go 4-12 again, what happens then? 
If you think it can't happen you have not been watching enough NFL football. Just ask the Ravens!

I know that it may throw things a little out of wack, but if BE has earned the money, he needs paid... JMO however.

So we let him do it again next season, to show some consistency , and pay him in 2009.

Either way, at some point, the Team has to recognize his contribution.
I'm one of those guys that always thought that if you make a deal and half way through it, it appears that you should get more, then that's just too bad, you made your bed, now sleep in it.
But that's not reality in Sports because time is critical. Thier careers are short enough as it is.. and because of the violent nature of Pro Football, even the healthy and young can have a career ending injury at any moment..
So the old saying,, "strike while the iron is hot" probably applies here I would think.

There's been "Wind" that we WANT TO EXTEND HIM... Ink him NOW and we don't need to worry about FA in a few years...We also will end up saving in the long run... Tell me some of these guys that Extended 3 years ago aren't wishin' they DIDN'T... Sean Jones is another one coming up soon I bet...

If it is a player you want, I think you always have some leverage trying to work things a year or two early.
I think players and agents know that getting money early requires some sacrifice on their part.

For that kind of money, I could sit on the bench for 5 years then retire.
I understand the desire to make more money, but you have to wonder if any of these guys ever just sit down and go "You know, I make more in 4 months of playing football, than most people make in their lifetime. I think I have enough to keep me happy."

Well, I'm sure you make more money in a day than many people in Africa or China make in 6-months.
Does that mean you're happy with your current salary and wouldn't take a raise if it was available?
After all, someone somewhere else is making less than you. Shouldn't you be happy? Anything more would just be greedy, right?

Not exactly a fair analogy when you factor in standard of living. Pro football players live in the same country we do, so by comparison, they make a ridiculous amount of money compared to what the average American makes. But if I lived in China or some places in Africa and made what I make here, then you could say that, but that's not the way it is.

Nowhere does it say he is looking for a new deal right now. Besides, his contract is up after next year. Do you want to start thinking about resigning him now, or after he has another Pro Bowl year?

If he preforms like one of the 5 best WR in the NFL again next year he DESERVES to be paid. I'd like our players to be the highest paid at thier position pretty much always, and Definetely if they are the top player at that position. Makes players want to play here even more.

Nope, I doubt that they really do until they're looking at retiring. What you must understand Florida Fan is that a million dollars is a million dollars. Whether they are making 3 million or 7 million dollars a year, another 3 million sounds great. Ya know?

Mark my words 017: Edwards wants a new deal NOW. He didn't hire Condon just so he can wait a year. After he see's what we do with Anderson and then Winslow, he'll go after his duckets.
Just wait and see.....
As far as wanting him to produce again like he did this past year to "earn" his raise, keep in mind he had 60 catches for 900 yards with Charlie freakin' Frye throwing him the ball In his mind, he's been a beast, and the FO probably believes it. His two season totals:
141 catches
2173 yards
15.4 yards per catch
22 TD's
If they give Winslow a new contract after two good years and a substantial injury, Edwards has a rock-solid case to get a new contract after two good years and a substantial injury. Afterall, the team made him the posterboy for the team I'd expect no less from Edwards, and the new agent he just hired that doesn't get paid until he gets a new contract.

Just making a point that it was never said.
I'm on the side of him wanting a new contract.
For one, it means he wants to be in Cleveland. I'm all for that.
Secondly, lock him up while we can. If he explodes next year again like he did this year, you're looking at his contract year and even bigger payout. If we resign him this year, we'll have him locked during his prime, with Winslow looking for a deal, an OL that will pretty much be in place for a while, and a young QB who can bring it all together.
