Black Crowes Say Maxim Review a Fraud

NEW YORK (AP) — The Black Crowes are lashing out at Maxim magazine for reviewing the band's new album — apparently without actually hearing it first.

The review, published in Maxim's March issue, gives the Crowes' "Warpaint" a rating of two-and-a-half stars out of five.

"The writer — who has not heard the album since advance CDs were not made available — wrote what appears to be a disparaging assessment anyway, citing, `it hasn't left Chris Robinson and the gang much room for growth,'" said a statement on the band's official Web site.

The band's manager, Pete Angelus, said the magazine explained that its review was an "educated guess."

"It speaks directly to the lack of the publication's credibility," Angelus said in a statement. "In my opinion, it's a disgrace to the arts, journalism, critics, the publication itself and the public. What's next — Maxim's concert reviews of shows they never attended, book reviews of books never read and film reviews of films never seen?"

A representative for the magazine would not confirm or deny to The Associated Press whether the writer actually listened to the album. Instead, Maxim released this statement in response: "Maxim will continue to provide our readers with information that is important to them, whether it is about fashion, lifestyle, technology, music, movies and more."

"Warpaint," the band's first album in seven years, is set for release March 4. The blues-rock group, fronted by Chris Robinson, has released only one song from the disc, "Goodbye Daughters of the Revolution."

The band's hits include "Hard to Handle" and "She Talks to Angels."

I'm not a Black Crowes fan, but I like a couple of their older songs.
This is part of the reason I don't follows reviews for movies, books, or music, and just listen to it to form my own opinion, since that all a review is, an opinion.

I can't even tell you how many movies I absolutely love, that critics said were horrible, and should never have been filmed. Same with music.

Just goes to show. Everyone has an opinion, and theirs may not coincide with yours. Doesn't mean you are right and they are wrong or vice versa, it just means you have different views and interests.

Damn, I guess I'll have to stop reading Maxim for its CD reviews now.

Maybe it's just me, but if you are going to review something, shouldn't you at least hear it if it's music or see it if it's a movie?

Obviously, the value of reviewing something based on best guess is just plain stupid....

Especially when it is your job, and you get paid for doing it.

What other business can you write a report for, without ever doing the research? Only in journalism I think.

This is a bigger deal than most people think. For them to write a review on music that they have not heard speaks volumes about the integrity of the writer, and magazine as a whole. Class action kind of stuff.

It's probably just some lazy writer that didn't care and now the whole magazine looks horrible. Not that I care about Maxim, I can't stand their rag.

I'm actually more upset about the "Maxim Effect". In my opinion, a lot of magazines tried following the Maxim format. It's a goofy, jokey, non-informative format that has more emphsis on their half-naked spread of some random chick* than content you can use in your daily life (wardrobe, fitness, food, entertainment, women and gadgets). GQ & Men's Health used to actually have content to read...not so much anymore.

*Don't get me wrong, I like the spreads but if I want to see that...I'll find that for myself elsewhere.

LOL.

I think it's been proven that you can write whatever you want on this board without knowing the first thing about what you're talking about.

Quality, and I agree. Or Men's Health, my personal favorite.

I dunno...Maxim lost the cool factor it had when I was painfully single and under 20 years old. Now I barely even give it a look...things like this just prove it's not all that good at things other then getting the random it girl of the month nearly naked on the cover.

And while I'm not purchaser of it, you think Hef would ever allow this to happen in Playboy? Yeah Playboy has nude broads in it, but the journalism is solid.
