As the regular season ended, halfback Jamal Lewis expressed his confidence in being able to re-sign with the Cleveland Browns. Jamal Lewis Lewis Running Back Cleveland Browns Profile 2007 Season Stats Rush Yds TD Rec Yds TD 298 1304 9 30 248 2 On Thursday afternoon, that optimism was rewarded with a multiyear contract. Lewis agreed in principle to a deal to stay with the Browns more than two years. Terms of the deal, including the length, are not known. A Browns announcement is expected later Thursday afternoon. A year ago, Lewis left the Baltimore Ravens to sign a one-year, $3.5 million contract with the Browns, who had former Ravens chief scout Phil Savage as their general manager. He had rushed for 3.4 and 3.6 yards a carry in his final two seasons with the Ravens. Lewis re-established himself as one of the best backs in football, rushing for 1,304 yards and scoring nine rushing touchdowns last year. As the 10-6 season ended, Lewis vowed to be even better in 2008. His plan is to be among the league leaders in rushing. With a multiyear contract behind him, Lewis can worry about moving ahead in the Browns offense and trying to lead the Browns to a playoff berth, which they just missed this season. Sweet! We'll have to see the dollars and years to know how sweet, but it's good to have Jamal on board. Now RB is a luxury and not a need.

My day just got a lot better. If Harrison and Wright can step up we'll have one of the best RB situations in the league.

Finally we have some good news this off-season. Dansby getting franchised, then the DT in Green Bay ... but it's good to have Jamal back in the fold. One less thing to worry about in FA and the draft.

I get email from the Browns when something happens.. This is what they sent me,., Quote:
Browns sign Lewis
By Zac Jackson
INDIANAPOLIS -- The Browns reached one of the their most important offseason goals Thursday, finalizing a new three-year contract for running back Jamal Lewis.
"The Browns are pleased that Jamal has decided to continue his career here in Cleveland," said Phil Savage, Cleveland Browns Senior Vice President and General Manager. "He brings a maturity, toughness and football temperament to the team that is critical to our success on top of the physical abilities that he possesses. Plus, he'll have the opportunity to go over 10,000+ career yards in 2008, which will put him in elite company."
Working on a one-year deal in his first year with the team last year, Lewis proved to be a solid fit in Rob Chudzinski's new offense and a valuable veteran addition to a young locker room. He rushed for 1,304 yards and 9 touchdowns as the team's feature back, highlighted by a 216-yard day in the Browns' home win over the Bengals. He also scored twice and totaled 156 yards against his former team as the Browns swept the Ravens for the first time since 2001.
"One of the important things for any football team, and any offense, is continuity, and re-signing Jamal allows us to have some of that continuity," said Chudzinski. "I'm excited about having him back. We asked him last year to do some things that maybe he hadn't done much of before, such as running outside, or hadn't done for a long time, and he embraced it. He did everything we asked him to do. His numbers tell you that he was one of the top runners in the league, but he was just as good when it came to being a good influence in our locker room."
Lewis, who will turn 29 just before the start of the 2008 season, was especially good in December. He went over 100 yards in three of the Browns' last four games, sealed the Jets' win with a late breakaway touchdown and ground out 163 yards in a blizzard in the Browns' 8-0 win over the Bills.
Browns personnel began arriving in Indianapolis for the NFL Scouting Combine Wednesday and Thursday. Savage and Romeo Crennel are expected to speak from the Combine on Friday. Stay tuned to ClevelandBrowns.com for video of these availabilities, as well as more Combine coverage.

I'll try to reserve judgment until after seeing the $$ amounts, but this certainly seems like a great job by our FO...yet again!
It's a strange feeling to have some solid depth at a position and the knowledge that we're not going to be wondering at the beginning of the year "gee, I wonder who our starting RB will be this year."
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

I'm a little surprised at the length of 3 years...but hey, good for him. That gives us a little time to find the next Jim Brown.

My day just got a lot better. If Harrison and Wright can step up we'll have one of the best RB situations in the league.
I don't understand what you mean by stepping up. Both played very well last year in relief of Lewis. Wright is a decent backup and had a good average not to mention a good special teams player and an excellent blocker on blitz pickups. Harrison in limited action averaged well over 4+ yards a carry.
I think they have already stepped up. IMO Wright is playing as good as he can, but I really believe Harrison has not been given enough time to show how good he really is.
One of the best parts of this signing, is their is no question on what you get with Lewis. If we had to sign a FA, their is always question marks on how they will perform in a new system, and sometimes with a new contract.
I want to pre-counter, if that is a thing, all the posters who will be saying that now that he has a contract he will not play as hard. Lewis WILL play hard, I believe it is just in his nature. He has got to realize that he only has a couple more years left, and if he wants to go down as one of the best, which I believe he does, now he is in the perfect scenario to do it.
Remember, last year he was coming off treatment for ankle spurs, this year he will be coming in healthy and with a new contract, on a team dedicated to running the ball and on the edge of a playoff run. Cleveland could very well be his swan song. I, for one, would love to see him retire a Brown. And remembered for being a Brown and not a ratbird. Him forever being tied to Jim Brown and Leroy Kelly, IMO sure beats being tied to Ray Lewis.

Yep, good move by Savage. His stock is rising in my eyes all the time. Now do the right thing and ink DA for three years.

Yeah good move by Opie........I still hope we draft a later round RB though, because I am much less enamored with Wright and Harrison than some of you, and it's best to develop your replacement RB (and hopefully could be primary backup) than have to spend a 1st rounder on one out of need imo.
Congrats Jamal!!! You earned it bro.

Excellent move...The attitude of the Browns offense will be one of "we will smack you right in the mouth"...thanks to Jamal and our offensive line....and that is an important element to our offense. Just as soon as your thinking about us running, we go long...
Now, get Anderson under contract and Savage can cross off another one of his things to do in the offseason.

Holy Cow !....This is going to make or break Danny Ferry as GM in C-Town .....I'm Not sure where this trade will lead us this season or over the next few seasons , those fans who have called for change just got it !....All I can say is , only time will tell....I am not one who wants this deal to lead to us adding gilbert Arenas in the offseason , his knee issues still aren't worth the $$ investment that he will want IMHO....but anyway....Go Cavs !!.... ....GEEZ you all can tell that I had a long day at work....reading one thread and posting to another ! ...** Having Lewis in the fold is a Major asset to this team and a job well done !....GO Browns !!.......

jc good move....but let´s wait for the $ and please no Berrian in CLE....he would be too expensive and maybe even create a bigger problem (Edwards and Winslow asking for raises) Hackett or Johnson I´d be ok with....but no Berrian please I want Hackett, M.Douglas and E.Wilson

At this point........I don't care much about the dollars. The salary cap isn't a big deal anymore. And it could get crazier.
I am now hoping Kelly is okay and that we sign him. I wouldn't mind Wilson.
LOL........I'm thinking as I'm going.......hoping to pull names out of the hat. This FA class is quickly turning into crap.

Fan Freaking Tastic! Three things needed to happen in this year's offseason for me 1. Sign Lewis - Check 2. Sign DA to Long Term deal whether we trade him or not 3. Get help for the defensive front 7. Huge Signing IMO... this was extremely important to keep our offense going

The money is a huge deal. When the figures come out,the pseudo-GM's can analyze, scrutinize and criticise. PS won't bust the bank on an older RB. I don't know about smashmouth, but we need JL on this team,a very good signing reguardless of the dollars.
Indecision may,or maynot,be my problem

Awesome news, I along with most of the posters on here knew it was going to get done we just didnt know when. When we originally signed him I was bummed, not because he wasnt any good but his off field stuff and the fact he was a turdbird. I know his trouble came yrs ago but you just have a funny feeling about ppl some times. He proved me wrong, not only is he a stand up guy he is also a mentor, which is very important in this league. Good job Phil.

i see this as a precoursor to more teams slappin tags on players to keep them on thier current team. The good thing is that one you have a good team... you will be able to keep a good team. for a while there you couldn't keep a superstar without waaaaaay overpaying them. Capologist are doing so much better managing the money of the tream then five ten years ago.

Not only that.......but the cap is rising and teams can afford to pay their own players more. I have no problems w/that.
I believe teams should be built through the draft. Hopefully, Savage can hold his own. He's been so-so in the draft thus far. He is going to have to improve in this area if the Browns want to be a legitimate contender.

IMO the FA classes the past 2 offseasons have been crap. The CBA extension made it so easy to keep the guys you want to keep and still have sufficient room under the cap (unless your name is Washington Redskins).
It'll even out in a few years when all the contracts in the NFL are relative to the new CBA (but of course, the next CBA may actually reduce the cap, creating a huge FA market).
This offseason it's even worse, though.

to me it seems like he/scouts pays so much more attention to day one then day two picks. There always diamons to be found... I think once we stop drafting for need we will see more picks that are for development then filling holes which will make the Browns a better team.

I'm glad they got this done and over with. Jamal is one tough hombre and everything we hear about him indicates that he's a leader. He seems to like it in Cleveland, dare I say he's a true Brown. I don't mind the three years, I think it shows committment on our part. I also don't think he bent them over with the dollar amount either because something tells me he cares more about winning and respect than a few dollars more.

What your saying could happen... But I'll take the bet anyway... WR needs upgraded... We could get rid of 3 IMO...But the D front 7 will be the focus... IMO. There are some good safety's out there too... I think we could upgrade or add solid depth @ S this year... Think about this... If your D is soft in the middle, form front to back any team is in big trouble... We shall see man... Enjoy!

Absolutely essential and EXCELLENT signing . Next on the to-do list: 1) Sign DA before the 28th 2) Acquire 1 FA WR 3) Acquire 1-2 FA D front-7 4) Draft em up! What an awesome day for Cleveland!

This news was huge for us.
The push to postseason runs through a team's abilty to pound the football in cold weather. When you think about how many times Jamal Lewis pounded us when he wore black and purple, how could ANY Browns fan not be happy about this signing?
Jamal Lewis provides us with something we've lacked since we said goodbye to Kevin Mack... he's a running back who can pound an opposing D like Mike Tyson on methamphetamine. He's a modern-day almost-Jim Brown... and he's something that every championship-hopeful team needs.
As for those Dawgs who might worry that he'll "let up," now that he's got his paper- I don't think this dude's ever been as concerned with money as he's been concerned about beating the guy who's lined up in front of him. If you need proof, let me submit:
his pair of 200+ games against us a few years back his 31- yard TD run in Week 14 for us against the Jets.
For him, it's about winning... play to play, and game to game.
In short, he's the kind of player that Browns fans have always liked, respected and wanted.... and needed.
Signing Jamal Lewis was immense for our continued growth. It gives us depth, dimension, and an offense that MUST be feared/respected... no matter what month of the season the opposition must play us. Such is the stuff of which playoff teams are made.
Thanks, Phil!
One down... several (but dwindling) signings/extensions to go...

THE missing piece? Come on, Dawg.
We need all these pieces BEFORE we need a WR:
NT DE OLB FS
We could use a WR, but it isn't THE missing piece. We need defensive help in the worst way.
