Hoping for some help please ......

I have just spent 3 hours trying to sort out a friends computer. Now I am not very computer literate and everything I have tried has failed.

For some reason her computer does not recognise that she has a CD drive. When I click on the my computer icon it shows her C drive but has no icon to show a CD drive is there? Now when we put in a cd not surprisingly nothing happens!?

I have run a spybot check - and after clearing away alot of files that she no longer uses I finally attempted a system restore ... nothing worked!

Can anyone help me PLEASE!!!???

when you boot, does the CD self-test (light up, spin a little, etc) ?

Check in the bios to see if the CD is being seen.

CD drive or cable may have gone bad, it happens.

the first thing to look at is on the inside of it.... you're going to want to ensure that there is both a data cable going to it and a power connection.

When did it last work? Has it ever worked? Is it new?
If it isn't new and it used to work, then to the best of her recollection, what has changed (I bet the answer is "nothing".. it always is )?

Can you push the button of her cd rom drive and have the tray open while the computer is on?

If not, Open up the computer....make sure that the CD Rom drive has it's power cable plugged in. Also, be sure that it's ribbon cable is plugged in.

I doubt anyone would have messed around with the jumpers on the CD Rom drive...so I doubt that is the problem.

Go in to the BIOS...check to see if that sees her CD Rom Drive. If not...it may be dead. You can get a CD / DVD Writer from Walmart for $30.

But, if the computer is under warranty...call the manufacturer.

I had the same problem on my mom's computer and after a long Google search, the root of the problem was found. I had to change or delete something in one of the regedit files. Sounds intimidating, but it wasn't.

I suggest doing a google search for CD Rom drive will not work or something along those lines. Read every forum it sends you to and see where that takes you. If I had the link, I'd post here, but don't have it anymore. I'll see if I can't find it again.

Wow thanks for the prompt replies!

Well the cd does open when the computer is switched on and the green light works. Now the actual system will have never been opened so not sure whether it is possible for the cables inside to be unplugged?

Looking on her PC there is Limewire and when I did a system virus scan there was about 300 viruses that I have removed!!! If I had to guess then could some kind of virus delete the CD Rom?

Now when you mention BIOS - how do I do that?

Her son tells me the CD used to work? and yes nothing has changed since!!??

Odds are ED that one of those many viruses, spyware, etc changed a setting. I think if you try the links I gave you and follow them verbatim, you may get it working again.

Of course, make sure the computer is clean - might need to do a full reformat to make that happen though. That means wiping it clean and starting over with Windows. If not, those viruses can keep popping up.

Another option would be to open the PC, unplug the ribbon cable from the CD, reboot the PC and run the virus checker to clean it out, then turn off the PC, plug the CD back in, and reboot again.

it should re-acquire the CD then.

Oh, and get rid of Limewire, damn virus infested files galore on there.
