China is an unelected dictatorship with long term outlooks on everything they do. Mentioned that in a recent post I think - we plan everything based around 4 year election cycles and the Chinese are planning for the next 100 years .... Yes the Chinese market has plumetted - but if we think Trump doesn't care much about the short term pain, I'd argue China cares less and has less (no) political fall out and risk from a trade war.
Not only that, but our economy is a service-dominated one. Theirs isn't. If a recession were to hit, and people start cutting back, which type of economy do you think is going to handle that better?
.... and to keep going down that rabbit hole, Trump has stated that the intention of the tariffs (one of them, at least) is to encourage reshoring of manufacturing jobs. But what I'm having my trouble wrapping my head around is the measures used to push our economy in a certain direction are the same things that could hurt it (a lot) in the present.
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.
Another one - based on both the way in which Ukraine was/is being handled and the sledge hammer/nuclear option that Trump went with the tariffs on traditional allies.... is there anyone that doesn't think that the rest of the world is going to re-order itself and look for stronger, better *more stable* trading deals with other countries and partners around the world. The UK doesn't have a trade deficit with the USA, the US may even export very slightly more than it imports. . . . UK still got a 10% tariff.
I guess the question is whether the world looks at Trump being the problem with his child like outlook. Or whether some of that stink will stick long term. If the US is truly going to be isolationist and if, say, Vance is the next PoTUS.... it only deepens any of the divide Trump is creating.

Trump tariffs live updates: EU OKs countermeasures, China hits US with 84% tariff
China on Wednesday said it was increasing its reciprocal tariffs on U.S. goods to 84% from the previous 34%, per a statement rom the country's Finance Ministry.
The measure came after President Donald Trump's additional tariffs on Chinese goods came into force, bringing the total rate of tariffs on Chinese goods to 104%.
In addition to China, European Union member states have voted to approve retaliatory tariffs on $23 billion in goods.

US trade representative says there will be an 'investigation' into extent of pharmaceutical tariffs
President Donald Trump told Republican lawmakers on Tuesday night that pharmaceuticals imports will soon be hit with "major" tariffs. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer was asked on Wednesday by Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-Texas, if that was true.
"He said he will impose them, now the extent of that is subject to investigation," Greer said.
Trump pauses reciprocal tariffs for 90 days for everyone but China
President Trump paused the sweeping reciprocal tariffs the U.S. imposed on dozens of countries this week, saying dozens had reached out to negotiate new trade deals.
Why it matters: It's the relief global markets and dozens of U.S. allies wanted, as fears of a global crisis mounted.
Catch up quick: Economists said the tariffs could cause a severe global recession, and major investors warned of even worse, up to a possible "economic nuclear winter."
Trump announced the tariffs April 2 — a 10% base global tariff as of April 5, and sharply higher reciprocal tariffs on around 60 nations as of April 9.
The magnitude of the tariffs caught markets off guard, and led some major Wall Street banks and economists to outright predict an almost immediate recession.
Why did the daily stock market updates/articles come to an end the past few days????
Not sure about others, but the market is acting like it's being controlled by a toddler on meth. Personally, I'm not a fan of trying to read the tea leaves in terms of the stock market, but up is down right now.
... and Trump just paused tariffs (not sure if that's all tariffs on his board... someone should clarify for the penguins), sending the market into an explosion.

Nice! I was there a couple weeks ago and realized I could spend hours just gawking at the badazz cases.
I don't know how often you make it there but you gotta check out that Racing Rig!
bro i do the same thing lol
The racing rig they have on the floor always stops me in my tracks for like 5 minutes. One time i spent half the day trying to convince my wife that i would be an awesome E-racing pro if I could get the setup lmao

it isn't hard at all. the hardest thing is not buying the overpriced GPUs cause you think you're gonna need that extra 4-5 frame rate, or getting the wrong computer case because the GPU doesn't fit. as far as putting it together yourself, it takes maybe 1-2 hours. nowadays, the motherboard is definitely the one you wanna splurge on a bit. getting the latest motherboard ensures that you can future-proof your rig and just update CPU, GPUs, and memory without building a whole new rig every time. you just want a GPU that has atleast 12gb of ram and atleast 32gb of memory. IMO, to future-proof, get a GPU that has atleast 16gb and memory thats atleast 64gb, as the performance demand for games or other applications keeps rising.
you'll literally spend more time redownloading everything on the computer than you will putting it together.

Not horribly hard, if you can read, you can build a pc from components. Used to be harder before all these parts matchers were made little over a decade ago. But now, newegg and others have those parts pickers and you basically have to decide how much you want to spend and know what you want the pc to be able to do. I could walk you through it over the phone or a messaging app.

Liberation day, after a side show celebration of the event, has now been put on hold. No more liberation day for you!
Trump blinked.
I don’t think Trump blinked at all. I still think playing with tariffs like this is insane, but he got what he wanted. He wanted countries around the world to stop laughing at him and to “kiss his ass”. Now he’ll hold the ninety day pause over there heads to get a zero-zero deal with them. At least that’’s what a competent POTUS would do with this leverage. We’ll see. Capitulation, kissing the ring, is what he was after. Now the world fears him. Unbelievable. He could simply cut off anyone who does business with China, or any other country that slights him. Lunatic policies and blind squirrel nuts.
I can’t believe I’m saying it, but if we somehow come out the other side of this in better position than we went in, it will be a miracle. I still think he’s the dumbest elected official I’ve ever seen, maybe the dumbest functioning person too. But if he uses this “pause” to negotiate better trade deals world wide and stops crashing our economy, I might have to give him limited props. But I just don’t think that is how it will go. We’ll see.
I didn’t get online until around 2:30 pm today, other than when I woke up around 7 am. The dow is up 2400 points when I looked and I was like what the hell is going on now? Came on here and saw that he paused them and I’m shocked markets reacted like this on a pause. Again, we’ll see. But at least this might slow the crash. I know if the market bounces all the way back, look out for that 90 day mark. Because if he goes full bore again in 90 days it will be worse.
What's so funny is trump backtracked on his tariffs like he said he would not and they think they won something. And the problem is a lot of it isn't about tariffs at all. His formula also includes the trade deficits.
A zero to zero tariff situation is what we had to start with in most cases. It's just another one of his con games.
Somehow he thinks countries with a fraction of our population should be buying as many goods from us as we buy from them. Or maybe he really doesn't and that's just another one of his shell games.

It might have worked out that way temporarily, but I don’t think China will feel much pain from this. We still will, but not as much as we would without him pausing to negotiate. AND I hate this but Trump might even come out on top, we won’t but he will.
I saw that. My question is, he paused reciprocal tariffs on those who did not retaliate. Who else retaliated? And can the penguins still trade with us?
I'm not sure of every other nation involved. I know Canada struck back. But when you think about this it's like trump is saying,"After I hit you in the mouth I'll only spare the people who didn't hit me back".

I get that. But Bessent never said anything about anyone but China in that clip I just watched. He damn well better end this crap with China and Mexico too. Foolish BS.
"I have authorized a 90 day PAUSE, and a substantially lowered Reciprocal Tariff during this period, of 10%, also effective immediately," Trump wrote Wednesday afternoon in a Truth Social post.
At the same time, Trump said that he would by increase tariffs on Chinese goods up to 125%, a further escalation in an ongoing trade war between the two countries.
"At some point, hopefully in the near future, China will realize that the days of ripping off the U.S.A., and other Countries, is no longer sustainable or acceptable," Trump wrote.
Trump's announcement, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said, underlines that the US will only reward countries that did not retaliate against Trump's Liberation Day tariffs.
This needs to be posted in the political jokes thread. I'm glad the markets have recovered somewhat and I'm glad that the tariffs seem to be on hold for most Claiming this is some kind of victory. Over china is truly stupid.

people at our level need to buy when we can and hold what we got. i dunno why normies panic-sell like glorified day traders.
“To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.”
The President banked that our economy could withstand the pressure more than other countries. Now we have 70+ countries eager to work a deal, so a pause was put in place to allow time to make all the deals, and the market surged.
I feel sort of bad for the people who jumped over the last 3-4 days. As long time investors say, you don't lose money until you sell
Some posters said the market would fall below 30,000 in short order. I think it is headed up to 50,000, at least unless China releases another virus, or moves to take Tiawan...which i do think could happen fairly soon.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.
Since trump reversed everything that caused this in the first place. It's odd people give credit to people for trying to clean up the very mess they themselves created in the first place. And you are trusting the numbers trump gave you. Just yesterday the White House claimed that close to 50 nations had contacted trump. Then right after that trump claimed it was 70. But you keep taking his word for it.

I'm curious about what comes of these countries coming to Trump for negotiations. It'll be interesting to see if there's any substantive follow-up to this game of chicken.
As of now, nothing has changed from the day before these tariffs (briefly went into effect). And more long-term, if they do sign new deals, is he just going to rip them up in a couple years like he did with the Mexico/Canada one he signed in his first term?
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.
The world knows he can't be trusted. He's shredded deal after deal the U.S. had made. And as you pointed out, even the USMCA which he made. If only his supporters could figure that out.
He's depending on his supporters forgetting who made that deal and depending on them not to watch or listen to any source that might tell them that was him who did.

I think you're being far too kind. The whole process was a wound of our own making. Markets don't like volatility and instability. That's exactly what Trump Instigated.
If somebody said that the market would go below 30,000 I missed it.
I did see a poster saying that the market needed a correction and it was over inflated and the devaluation was much needed. That same poster now seems to be boasting that the market's going to hit 50,000. To me it looks like that poster is drinking hard at the Kool-Aid and singing the song of the day no matter what it is.

Where did you see that? You didn't. Why do you constantly make things up -- you make a fool of yourself. Trump has said nothing about Ackman.
You and Ackman do have something in common though, you both helped get Trump elected. He did it with his money, you did it with your nonsense and lies.
Where do EITHER of these links say anything about "In fact Trump is already going after Ackman" Just quote the sentence, quote anything that backs up your lie.
Still waiting...
Still waiting for what? Do you really think I sit at my computer all day just to hear what ever you say because it's so damned important.
Trump would NEVER go after Ackman by himself.. He'd send his minions...
And that's what the articles show.
Ahhhh, so you lied. Why not just say "I lied" and save all the grief? It's not like anyone here is, or would be, surprised. You're all empty lies and crazy rhetoric anyway.
So here... this is "In fact Trump is already going after Ackman"...
(NEC) Director Kevin Hassett said in a Monday interview that billionaire hedge fund investor Bill Ackman “should ease off the rhetoric”
Thanks for the laughs, you're the gift that keeps on giving. Now crawl back under your rock.
Do you really think they do anything without Trumps prior approval/./. WAKE UP
