'Dawg' for a day

Pete McGuire, a custodian for Miamisburg City Schools and a die-hard Bengals fan, finds himself pulling for the Browns — for one day only.

He sees the big picture: Ohio's only chance at a playoff team is Cleveland.

"I hate to admit it, but I'm going to root for the Browns to win," McGuire said. "It's not to say I'm becoming a Browns fan by any stretch of the imagination. But if you're going to root for Ohio, they're our only chance."

He called the Bengals' season "disappointing. It's very bad. My basement is filled with Bengals memorabilia. I've got Bengals tattoos on me. But they've missed the playoffs 16 times in 17 years. How long do you keep on being beat down and try to root for a team?"

We certainly know about losing the home field advantage to ticket sellers, particularly against Pittsburgh in the past, but I'll be damned if any Browns' fan worth his salt would let an article print his name talking about rooting against the Browns. It's bad enough when fools on message boards hope we lose to get a better draft position.

Well i hope all their fans come with bags over their heads and cheer loud for the Browns. Anything to help drag down the Bungles this week is fine with me...

Honestly I don't get the whole "root for the state" thing... Do Mets fans root for the Yankees once the Mets are out? Do Duke fans root for Carolina once Duke is out? Do Eagles fans root for the Steelers? Do Rockets fans root for the Spurs? Do Gator fans root for Florida State? (sorry Peen, had to do it.. )

I'm so confused by this mentality... the team you root for is the team you root for.. who gives a crap if there is another team in the same state.

I agree, I'll never understand that logic. And rooting for someone in your division? Please.

I was born and lived the first 26 years of my life in Maryland.. and if the Browns are out, the absolute LAST team in the world I'm rooting for is the freakin' Ravens... Same goes for the Orioles and the Redskins...

I used to root for Ohio State in football, until their fans started getting annoying

I rooted for Pittsburgh in the SB a couple years ago, mainly because they were the AFC representative, other than that, I root for the Browns or Tampa Bay, and in that order.

now a SB in Feb 2008 with Cle vs TB would be sweet.

As odd as this may seem, I kinda understand his thinking..

I mean, a couple of years back when the Steelers and Seahawks played in the superbowl, I rooted for Pittsburgh... I have rooted for the AFC all along,, with one notable exception,, the Ravens.. and then only because of Modell.

So like I say, I do kinda understand the concept.. BUT I COULD NEVER ROOT FOR ANY TEAM TO BEAT THE BROWNS.. NEVER! That's the part of his thinking that has me baffled..

I can somewhat understand as well.

As a kid I rooted for the Browns, then the division, then the Conference, in that order.

Nowadays though, I take my hatred of divisional opponents a little more seriously, so I *always* root against all of them unless them winning is the greater benefit to the Browns.

I can't get behind that thinking. Maybe it's how I was raised, but the Steelers get NO LOVE from me. If it ever came down that a Steelers' win would help the Browns, I'd hope for a tie. Same with the Ravens, but that has less to do with the things I learned watching my dad and his friends when I was a kid.

The Bengals get a lot less animosity from me but I don't think I could root that current squad on in a Super Bowl, whiners that they be.

When the Bengals were in the Super Bowl against San Francisco,I rooted for the 49'ers. My mother in law asked me if I was a Buckeye,I told her yes, but I am a Browns fan...NOT a Bungles fan.

I cheer on the Big Ten teams in non-conference games and all the bowl games but I would NEVER root against the BUCKS or the Browns for that matter. Heck, I boycotted the Super Bowl a few years ago because I absolutely HATE the Steelers and their toothless fans.

That's the thing...I have my reasons for rooting against all of our division rivals. Modell, Bungle fans, and just the fact that the Steelers are the Steelers. Those are the only reasons I need.

Under no circumstances could I ever root for Cincinnati....EVER. Not a Super Bowl, especially.
