It doesn't make sense to me. I can't understand why coaches didn't strive to have a better two pronged attack. I recently bought a blank jersey that took me a while to decide on a number. I had a "cousin" play for the Browns, his name was Johnny Brewer. He played TE for four years, and had about the same stats KW will have for this year. I can't figure out a reason the passing game wasn't used more. I'll be wearing #83 for those that don't know, and "Cousin" Johnny played for the 64 Championship team.

I think he is meaning that in the past there was not nearly the passing offenses there are today and is asking why teams didn't try to become more balanced and not be run oriented for the most part. I'm not sure thats what he meant, but thats what I got from it.

If it were me I'd put Johnny Brewer's name and #83 on that blank jersey.

Okay, that makes sense now that I think about it. Don't know if I can explain it in a nutshell or not.....
Back in the day, games were not high scoring affairs like we see today. It was mostly grind it out, mano on mano smashmouth football. Have you ever tried to throw a pig's bladder towards an intended target?
There was a wise man who once said that there are 3 things that can happen when you pass the ball through the air, and two of those are bad. (extra credit for the first dawg who reveals the person from whom this quote came from)
The NFL was challenged by the upstart AFL back in the day.........the rules were a little different and the rules in the AFL favored the passing game. Why was this you may ask?? Because the NFL was established, and the AFL was not, so they had to find a niche. Fans like scoring!!! It's led to changes in baseball rules over the years as well.
What else happened about the same time the AFL was challenging the NFL?
Television!
Picture two teams going back and forth against one another with nothing but running plays. How dull is that? (The Ohio State University Buckeyes once referred to this as "3 clouds and a yard of dust.")
Evolution of the game and it's equipment......nothing more, nothing less.
This is why Winslow will have the same number of catches this year as Johnny Brewer had in his career. (not to mention the 16 game schedule vs the 12 game schedule)
There are a lot of great books out there about this.....and I'm sure some stuff online as well.

Well that would be University of Tennessee coach General Robert Neyland.

Perhpas you should read your own link that attributes it to Coach Royal?
The correct answer is Woody Hayes.
Just because.

I'm not sure that I understand this thread. If he means in the old days...it's because we had Jim Brown, then Leroy Kelley...plus the fact that most teams ran more.
If he means recently, it's because we haven't had an OL until now.
