Bug spray fetches $673 in auction By Mark Newman / MLB.com
What would you pay for a used can of bug spray? One fan posted a winning bid of $673 at the MLB.com Auction for the can that was sprayed in the Yankees' dugout when tiny midges swarmed Cleveland's Jacobs Field during the American League playoffs.
The winner's identity is kept secret here at Major League Baseball Advanced Media, but it was not believed to be Joba Chamberlain.
Distracted by the bugs, known as midges, crawling all over his neck and face, the rookie reliever threw two wild pitches in Game 2 of the American League Division Series, allowing the Indians to score the tying run in the eighth inning. The Yankees lost, 2-1, in 11 innings and fell behind, 2-0, in a series they lost in four games.
That bug repellent was just part of an incredible postseason auction that drew strong bidding across the board for game-used items that always hold meaning to someone. It just goes to show that you can find nearly anything at the MLB.com Auction, which is another source for great holiday shopping along with the MLB.com Shop. And there's plenty more, including these that close Monday night or later:
• A first base that was used during Game 1 of the AL Championship Series between the Red Sox and Indians at Fenway Park. The Red Sox opened that series with a 10-3 rout as David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez were unstoppable. For Boston fans looking for world championship memorabilia, this could be a key item.
• A unique Cal Ripken Jr. signed baseball featuring 10 separate inscriptions. The Hall of Famer added such highlights as 2632 CG, "The Ironman", 19x AS, 3184 Hits, 431 HRs and 1982 ROY. Take a look -- pretty unusual for Ripken.
• Craig Monroe's jersey that he wore May 31 for Detroit. Monroe hit a two-run homer that game off eventual AL Cy Young Award winner C.C. Sabathia.
• Big Papi's signature on a game-used first base from Yankees at Red Sox on June 3. It's authenticated by Major League Baseball as all of these are, and it comes with a Steiner letter of authenticity.
• A Mike Lowell autographed "Celtic Green" Red Sox jersey. The Boston third baseman wore it against the Yankees on April 20, when Sox players honored late Celtics owner Red Auerbach. Manny, Kevin Youkilis and others have the same items on the block.
• A framed David Wright autographed home jersey. It's framed beautifully in black wood with blue and white double matting.
There are priceless pieces of memorabilia all over the MLB.com Auction for collectors. In fact, it's swarming all over the place there, like midges. But there's no more bug spray. Someone just grabbed it off the shelf.

Hmm, OK....I can think of many other uses for $673, but whatever floats your boat.
And it's not like either team went on to win the World Series afterward.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

Yeah, if had been the Red Sox bug spray, I definitely would have bid $675!

I'm continually displeased at the MLB reports of this and continually blaming the bugs for that loss, and insinuating that it lead to the series loss. I understand that its a fun story and all, but lets not mention the hitters or the fact that those bugs didn't seem to bother Fausto at all. The bugs played a part, but that was also a partial meltdown by Joba, but since he is a New York golden boy, that won't be mentioned.

I have never been one to agree with people when they say some people have too much money.......in this instance, that might be the case.
