Colts Release Three-Time Pro Bowl Defensive End
INDIANAPOLIS – The Colts on Tuesday released recently-acquired Simeon Rice.
Rice, a defensive end acquired off waivers from the Denver Broncos two weeks ago in the wake of a season-ending injury to Pro Bowl defensive end Dwight Freeney, was waived, the club announced Tuesday.
The team re-signed fullback Luke Lawton to the active roster.
Rice, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, joined the Colts on November 13 after being released by the Denver Broncos on November 9. He had signed with Denver in September after being released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Rice,
a 12-year veteran and the third overall selection in the 1996 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals, has 122 career sacks, second only to Michael Strahan of the New York Giants among active players.
He had one sack for the Colts, playing in two games as a reserve.
Lawton, a second-year veteran from McNeese State, played in six games for the Colts this season before being released shortly after the team’s 29-7 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars October 22. He rushed for 13 yards on five carries.
The AFC South-leading Colts (9-2) will play host to the Jaguars (8-2) at the RCA Dome Sunday at 1 p.m.
