I have always been a reader. I have great respect for the written word. In music the singer song writers are the musicians I lean towards.
There is only one who has won the Nobel for Literature.
Every Grain of Sand Lyrics by Bob Dylan
In the time of my confession, in the hour of my deepest need When the pool of tears beneath my feet flood every newborn seed There's a dying voice within me reaching out somewhere Toiling in the danger and in the morals of despair
Don't have the inclination to look back on any mistake Like Cain, I behold this chain of events that I must break In the fury of the moment, I can see the master's hand In every leaf that trembles, in every grain of sand
Oh, the flowers of indulgence and the weeds of yesteryear Like criminals, they have choked the breath of conscience and good cheer And the sun beat down upon the steps of time to light the way To ease the pain of idleness and the memory of decay
I gaze into the doorway of temptation's angry flame And every time I pass that way I always hear my name Then onward in my journey, I come to understand That every hair is numbered like every grain of sand
I have gone from rags to riches in the sorrow of the night In the violence of a summer's dream, in the chill of a wintery light In the bitter dance of loneliness fading into space In the broken mirror of innocence on each forgotten face
I hear the ancient footsteps like the motion of the sea Sometimes I turn, there's someone there, at times it's only me I'm hanging in the balance of a perfect finished plan Like every sparrow falling, like every grain of sand

Telegraph Road (Mark Knopfler)
Well a long time ago, came a man on a track Walking thirty miles with a sack on his back And he put down his load where he thought it was the best He made a home in the wilderness
He built a cabin and a winter store And he ploughed up the ground by the cold lake shore And the other travellers came walking down the track And they never went further, no they never went back
Then came the churches, then came the schools Then came the lawyers, then came the rules Then came the trains and the trucks with their loads And the dirty old track was the Telegraph Road
Then came the mines, then came the ore, Then there was the hard times, then there was a war Telegraph sang a song about the world outside Telegraph Road got so deep and so wide Like a rolling river
And my radio says tonight it's gonna freeze People driving home from the factories There's six lanes of traffic Three lanes moving slow
I used to like to go to work but they shut it down I've got a right to go to work but there's no work here to be found Yes, and they say we're gonna have to pay what's owed We're gonna have to reap from some seed that's been sowed
And the birds up on the wires and the telegraph poles They can always fly away from this rain and this cold You can hear them singing out their telegraph code All the way down the Telegraph Road
Well I'd sooner forget, but I remember those nights Yeah, life was just a bet on a race between the lights You had your head on my shoulder, you had your hand in my hair Now you act a little cold like you don't seem to care
But just believe in me, baby, and I'll take you away From out of this darkness and into the day From these rivers of headlights, these rivers of rain From the anger that lives on the streets with these names 'Cause I've run every red light on memory lane I've seen desperation explode into flames And I don't want to see it again From all of these signs saying "Sorry, but we're closed", All the way down the Telegraph Road.

Revelation Mother Earth
Mother please forgive them For they know not what they do Looking back in history's books It seems it's nothing new Oh! Let my mother live
Heaven is for heroes And hell is full of fools Stupidity, no will to live They're breaking God's own rules Please let my mother live
Father, of all creation I think we're all going wrong The course they're taking Seems to be breaking And it won't take too long
Children of the future Watching empires fall Madness the cup they drink from Self destruction the toll
I had a vision, l saw the world burn And the seas had turned red The sky had fallen, the final curtain In the land of the dead Mother, please show the children Before it's too late To fight each other, there's no-one winning We must fight all the hate
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

A Horse with No Name:
On the first part of the journey I was looking at all the life There were plants and birds and rocks and things There was sand and hills and rings The first thing I met was a fly with a buzz And the sky with no clouds The heat was hot and the ground was dry But the air was full of sound
I've been through the desert on a horse with no name It felt good to be out of the rain In the desert you can remember your name 'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain
After two days in the desert sun My skin began to turn red After three days in the desert fun I was looking at a river bed And the story it told of a river that flowed Made me sad to think it was dead
You see I've been through the desert on a horse with no name It felt good to be out of the rain In the desert you can remember your name Because there ain't no one for to give you no pain
And after nine days I let the horse run free 'Cause the desert had turned to sea There were plants and birds and rocks and things There was sand and hills and rings The ocean is a desert with its life underground And a perfect disguise above Under the cities lies a heart made of ground But the humans will give no love
You see I've been through the desert on a horse with no name It felt good to be out of the rain In the desert you can remember your name 'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain

Wish I Didn't Know Now What I Didn't Know Then (Toby Keith)
I never ask you where your goin', I never ask you where you've been I've never called and checked your story, When you stayed out with all your friends
I've never tried to catch you lyin', I didn't want to know the truth I'd rather go on lovin' blind, girl Than go on lovin' without you
I wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then I wish I could start this whole thing over again I'm not sayin' that you could ever be true I just don't want to know how it ends
You'd still have my heart in the palm of your hand I'd still look like a fool in front of your friends Yeah, I wish somehow I didn't know now what I didn't know then
I've always said what I don't know Couldn't hurt as bad as leavin' you Turns out I knew what I was thinkin', It ain't an easy thing to do
Well I guess I should be goin' I sure found out too much to stay, Please don't say you're sorry; I might wait another day
I wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then I wish I could start this whole thing over again I'm not sayin' that you could ever be true I just don't want to know how it ends
You'd still have my heart in the palm of your hand I'd still look like a fool in front of your friends Yeah, I wish somehow I didn't know now what I didn't know then

Thanks Bone. What a beautiful profession of faith. In this case, I’m not really into the delivery, but I can dig the lyrics. I never knew he’d won the Nobel Prize in literature. Thank you for the education. Here’s an article regarding the award, it even quotes the song you posted. Thought you might get a kick out of it. https://www.classicrockhistory.com/why-bob-dylan-won-the-nobel-prize-in-literature/

Popular Song is a genre that requires immense discipline. The music must be accessible to all, the form must be simple and repetitive... in service to the text.
The story is the point of the song- not the mechanics of music making. And the strictness of the musical format demands economy of words, coupled with a poet's penchant for imagery. The best songs are tightly-written stories, and the best stories paint a picture in the listener's mind.
"Strange Fruit" text and composition: Abel Meeropol (best performance: Billie Holliday)
"Southern trees bear a strange fruit- Blood on the leaves, and blood at the root. Black bodies swingin' in the Southern breeze, Strange fruit hangin' from the poplar trees.
Pastoral scene of the gallant South The bulgin' eyes and the twisted mouth Scent of magnolias sweet and fresh Then the sudden smell of burnin' flesh.
Here is a fruit for the crows to pluck For the rain to gather For the wind to suck For the sun to rot For the tree to drop Here is a strange and bitter crop."
"too many notes, not enough music-"

Thanks for the link.
I really enjoyed reading it. I have been a Dylan fan since the first time I heard him. I am glad to have been alive during his time. Interesting that "Every Grain Of Sand" was highlighted.
I am a avid reader. I was raised to appreciate the written word. In music, singer/songwriters have been the artists that captured my attention.
Lyrics that were more than songs but words to live by or guidelines to follow. Dylan crossed into that very early in his career.
His work stands alone. So many of his songs can stand alone as poems. "Simple Twist of Fate."
What is truly astounding is not only the quality but the quanity. Read his songs. They penetrate.
Rob Hunter from the Dead. Neil Young. Tom Waits. They also cross over to literature.
Lyrics from Rob Hunter:
If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung Would you hear my voice come through the music? Would you hold it near as it were your own?
It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken Perhaps they're better left unsung I don't know, don't really care Let there be songs to fill the air
Ripple in still water When there is no pebble tossed Nor wind to blow
Reach out your hand if your cup be empty If your cup is full, may it be again Let it be known there is a fountain That was not made by the hands of men
There is a road, no simple highway Between the dawn and the dark of night And if you go, no one may follow That path is for your steps alone
Ripple in still water When there is no pebble tossed Nor wind to blow
You who choose to lead must follow But if you fall, you fall alone If you should stand, then who's to guide you? If I knew the way I would take you home
These are just words. They become a poem. Music is added they grow to song.
They become a message and guide to life.
