Being an uneducated hick...can you tell me why Late nite shows like Leno can't go on without writers? It doesn't sound like it is a shut down due to honoring picket lines...surely Leno,Letterman and O'Brien can ad lib for their millions for a few weeks. No???

The strike centers on "new media" revenues. Presently, the writers get no cut of online sales, streaming ad revenues, etc. There are more complex issues, but that is the basis for the strike.

To the original question, it takes a lot of writing to fill 30 minutes. It'd be tough for any comedian to do 30 fresh, good, minutes every night. Plus, if Leno, Letterman, etc. did write their shows on their own without the writers, it would be very difficult for them to face the writers when they returned.

First off...Leno, Conan, Letterman, etc. rely on their writers'...an equivalent that might make sense is if there were an Offensive Linemen Unit, and the QB tried to go on without them...in short, no, it would be a disaster for anyone, no matter who, to ad-lib night after night with fresh material. Talk show hosts are paid the way they are because they can be funny in a split second - an awkward moment, a boring moment, etc...to sustain constant spontaneous comedy for that long with people they don't know...no way. The only thing that could really go on would be the interviews (which are pres-scripted, but subject to a segment producer (not a writer).

I've worked on one of the aforementioned talk shows, and I can tell you the host wouldn't dream of going on without the writers...not only because he couldn't do it witohut them, but because he has a bond with them...a good one...don't forget in the end HE hired them and is *probably* rooting for them...although he can't say it, because as we all know...everyone looks out for #1 first.

It's partly about honor and partly about inability to perform...and Hollywood has some NASTY unions that get the job done.

Sounds like maybe Dave (not asking you to spill the beans). I've read that Letterman's show is more scripted than it appears.
As for the original question, writers are indispensable on these shows, and most any TV show. Why shouldn't they get a cut from additional revenues like on-line stuff? They are the lifeblood of TV as much as the on-screen people.

I thought David Letterman did his own monologue during a past strike. Am I wrong?

I hear ya, and I'm only 31. That's the great thing about living in Chicago - the shows start at 10:35, so one can watch the monologue and a guest before falling asleep.
