Since with the prices of produce going up like everything else due the various factors such as oil prices, we all would like to get as much as we can for our $.
I love salads, and making sandwiches with lettuce on them and get frustrated on how to keep that head or leaf lettuce fresh in fridge. Has anyone any handy tips how they keep their lettuce fresh?

LOL, man this is toooo funny!! I want to know too. Man the internet is awesome. My lettuce either A) freezes or b) rots when I turn the fridge to a little warmer temp.
On fishing boats we cut it up as a big salad and put wet paper towels over it. That would keep it for a couple days, but we had about 5-30 guys eating it so it went fast. I don't think it works on a small scale. (heck I know it don't as I've tried it)

My wife puts it in a sealable container. In the fridge. Lettuce will last us for as long as almost 2 weeks.......no, it's not nearly crisp after 2 weeks, but it is still good. Myself, wife, and daughter love salads, so it usually doesn't last too long here til it's gone, but........

Just make sure whatever you store it in does not have alot of air in it. The air is what makes it brown the quickest.
Also, don't cut it with a knife, unless it's one of those special lettuce knives. Metal browns lettuce very quickly.

My refrigerator has a hydo-lock section that does a pretty good job of keeping it temperate and keeps the humidity low.
Keep it in the crisper and it should hold for a few days.
Also, in many older units, that section gets too cold......try keeping produce at the top of the frige..that is the warmest part.
Sounds like you like leaf lettuce...as someone said.....try pulling all the leaves off and store them in a air tight container...that will hold them a little longer....be sure to dry them well before storing....but any way you cut it...lettuce doesn't hold well once you break through Gods wrapper and peel off the outside leaves.
Your best bet is to go to the store a couple of times a week and buy less.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn. GM Strong

I really love these kinds of threads,.....they're so dang free of politics and homerism.
Absolutley refreshing,..!!
Lettuce is a real toughie, but the tip above on the knife was good. "Torn" by hand lettuce keeps it fresher. My garden is not big enough to accomodate; I stick to cukes and tomatoes (pickles and juice/soup), but the neighbor grows it, so we get plenty free. In that case, the answer is,..pick it and eat it right away. Nice and fresh.
However, my Mom used to keep it in one of those made-for-lettuce Tupperware crispers with a little vinegar sprinkled in the bottom. Don't know why/how, but I'm still to this day a big salad nut.

Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.
