Revisiting the attack on Pearl Harbor

On December 7, 1941, the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service launched a surprise attack on the US naval base at Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, Hawaii. The unprovoked strike was met with outrage and disbelief, and prompted the United States, up until then a neutral country, to declare war on Japan the next day and thus enter the Second World War. The event is commemorated every year by National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, but several films and television shows made over the years have also helped keep the attack in the minds of the public.

The attack that changed many lives forever. I have some family connections to this.

My grandfather was drafted and sent to train in the deserts of California to protect the west coaster from a Japanese invasion. He was trained on giant artillery cannons, he's still alive today at 96 but his hearing is quite limited due to these cannons. Eventually he went over to Berlin right when the war ended. He had to brave the passage of the English channel with the German U-Boats. He doesn't talk much about his time over there. It was a delight to see him light up when my sister brought pictures from her time in Germany. He told us a few stories then.

My wife exists due to WWII. Her grandfather and grandmother met while her grandfather was a soldier in WWII. I have yet to meet her, she's 91, but she's told me stories on the phone of hiding in the hills of Austria from the Nazis.

A day that will live in infamy

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

My grandfathers younger brother(Uncle Louie) was at Pearl Harbor when it was attacked. With communication wiped out, etc, they didn't know if he was alive/made it for weeks.

After that, the same grandfathers older sisters(Aunt Lucy) son(only child) was shot down over the pacific. Never seen/heard from again.

Same grandfathers wifes(grandma) brother saw a lot of action. Fought in the Ardennes Forest/Battle of the Bulge, etc.

May all who have served and perished Rest in Peace.

When I was in the Army stationed in Hawaii our squad went to the memorial. It is one of the most eerie places I have ever been. Just thinking about all those men that didnt make it out just below your feet, crazy feeling.

I hope Americans never forget the history of Dec 7, 1941. I salute the "Greatest Generation" for their patriotism, courage and the sacrifices they made for future generations.

Never forget...

When I was a kid I was always very interested about Pearl Harbor. Read whatever I could about it. As an adult I've watched any documentary about it usually on the history channel. I always remember that December 7th is Pearl Harbor day. I was never in the service but we should always remember those who were and are and the sacrifice they made for our great country. Another date I always remember in December is the 16th which was the beginning of the Battle of the Bulge. Thank God Hitlers last gasp effort to win the war failed.
