Figured this would be a good place to ask....
Has anyone ever been to the Hocking Hills area of Ohio? If so, can you recommend anything to see and/or do?
Thanks in advance...

Hocking Hills is a beautiful area. There are some excellent cabins tucked away in the hills.
Wayne National Forest is good for a day or two of hiking on the trails.
There is also a cave... trail... I can't remember the name off of the top of my head.
The campus of Ohio University (in Athens) is only 20-30 minutes away. Athens is ideal for eclectic tastes.

Hocking hills is incredible this time of year. When I went we stayed in the cabins at the state park, if I remember right they were pretty reasonable, & nice, While there we went on a couple hikes dont remember thier names but it was awsome. Might want to check out www.ohiodnr.com they have maps for state parks ect. i know wasnt much help but now is the time to go...... With the Browns being ideal this sunday, there's nothing good to watch on TV is there......

I was very impressed with the area, more hills than i thought. They have some very secluded cabins and even decked out houses in the woods, almost to secluded, I started freaking out when I heard sounds in the woods by the fire at 2am, maybe it was the chronic though . Anywho, def check out Ash cave, old mans cave and there is one more cool attraction, forget the name. I would def reasearch the cabin and find a good one.

I go down there quite a bit; it is especially nice in the fall. If you like to hike, it is a great place to go. The largest hiking and most popular area is Old Man's Cave. I try to stay away from there, especially on the weekend, as it's just too croweded for my tastes. Here is a link to the state parks in the area. The ones I'm going to list below may be somewhat crowded on a weekend, but not as bad as Old Man's Cave. In order of "must see" in my opinion: 1. Cantwell Cliffs 2. Conckle's Hollow 3. Cedar Falls (if there is enough water that the falls are actually there) 4. Rock Bridge Of coures you can canoe or kayak on the Hocking River. Not any class 5 (or even 1 for that matter) rapids; just a nice lazy trip. There are TONS of cabins for rent down there. Most are newer and have hottubs; these are private businesses and not part of the state park system. I've stayed in serveral different ones and all have been very nice.

Yeah, drive 20-30 minutes to Athens and you have 20 bars on one street. Never been to Hocking Hills but the story I have involves my friends on prom weekend getting caught drinking, including my friend showing his fake ID to an officer. Glad I went to Cedar Point that weekend because I was offered the chance to go to Hocking.

You can't go wrong with Athens if you want to party for a night, especially if you are planning on being there around Halloween I'm too old for the bar scene there now, as I found out during Homecoming last year. Wall to wall people to the point you can't walk through the bar is not my thing anymore. I'll probably go down on a "normal" weekend sometime this year, as Homecoming is VERY crowded.

Yeah, the hiking options is mostly what I'm concerned with....it seems that there are so many state parks in the area, that the choices are overwhelming. We're going during the week, so I guess that crowds won't be a problem. Thanks everyone for your advice!

Cantwell cliffs is really cool. As others have said...lots of cabins and chalets in the area. Old mans cave is cool. Really the whole Wayne National Forest area is chock full of outdoor rec opps. It depends on what you are looking for though.

A friend of mine has a place off Rt 56 past Laurelville and close to Ash Cave.. he's got a secluded farmhouse and 48 acres.. several ponds and a stream.. we are planning a campout / bonfire / football party / cookout and watch the OSU / PSU game at 8pm via satellite and the Browns Rams game the next day.. can't wait.. too bad the fall colors will be a bit washed out due to the stressed trees

I do remember a grotto that was very beautiful.

If time allows I would recommend taking a horseback ride through the woods . It is really a beautiful place and you can find some very nice secluded cabins and just soak in the hot tub ,crack a brew, and enjoy the explosion of fall colors . All of the locations mentioned by others are spot on and I'm sure you'll have a great time.

Already have the cabin with the hot tub booked. I've never been horseback riding, and can't say that I'm really interested. Do you know if there are any areas that permit ATV's? Now THAT would be a blast. And are there any ATV rentals places around there, for that matter?

It is amazing. I would recommend bringing your food and what not, booking a cabin with an outdoor fireplace and cooking out. My GF I think had one meal in two days there that someone else prepared, and it was great. Old Man's Cave is okay, but I loved Ash Cave.

You'd rather ride an ATV than a horse. Boo!
I would hope they wouldn't allow them there, not in the park anyway.

LOL....That reminded me of when we went to hocking hills, My exwife & I took our three kids, they were still pretty little and we had just bought a house and were young and the bills were still pretty high, well we knew we needed to get away so we vacationed to Hocking Hills. money was tight after the cabin was paid gas ect, ...anyway we found a sale on hot dogs, 100 pack of hot dogs for around $10.00, we ate hot dogs all week, lunch & dinner every day...We had coney dogs, regular boiled dogs, dogs on the grill, dogs with cheese, it was about six months after that until we even could stand the sight of another hot dog...When we talk about our vacation there, the one thing the kids remember most of all......the hot dogs

Yeah, I figure they wouldn't be allowed in the parks...but maybe off the beaten path somewhere. ATV's are fun!

Some parks do, and some don't...and the ones that do keep it in designated areas.

I just had to say it before Shep did. There is nothing like getting first hand knowledge from people that have been there.

Not sure about rentals, but Wayne National Forrest (just south of the locations listed above) has KILLER ATV/Motorcycle trails.

DORR Run is the best in the area if you like long unbroken and secluded ATV/ORV trails We used to ride it with mountain bikes. ATV riders thought we were nut because of all the uphills. not necessarily for first timers though. There are some pretty challenging single tracks http://www.atvaonline.com/ride/wayne.asp

I have a 300 acre tract of land/farm not too far from there so we drive over a few times a year.
This time of year you MUST be aware of your footing!!! (wet leaves and such)It's fairly steep in there and a good pair of boots is a must!
Just beware! It is wonderful and you'll be happy you chose to go there though!

That would be pretty cool. I would take a few extra days up there to do that....I wonder if you have to go out with mountain man??
Think I will search around for that.

Go w/ a group of people in 2 cars. Drop one car off at Old Man's Cave, drive to Ash Cave and hike all the way from Ash Cave back to Old Man's Cave. Nice hike, great scenery.
I've been getting the urge to go on a canoe trip. Hoping to do it down there sometime next summer.
