https://www.wtrf.com/news/education/indian-creek-schools-vote-yes-to-arming-teachers/MINGO JUNCTION, Ohio (WTRF) – Teachers in the Indian Creek School District will now be allowed to carry concealed weapons on school property.
The resolution passed unanimously in a 5-0 vote on Tuesday evening.
According to Board of Education President Dr. Ted Starkey, concealed weapons has been a major topic within the school district for the last six years.
In a perfect world, we wouldn’t have to be discussing alternatives like this. We wouldn’t have to be discussing ways of putting down a murderer in our schools but recent history has shown us that’s what’s happening in our world and there is no sign that it’s going to stop. -Dr. Ted Starkey, President of Indian Creek Schools BOE Concealed carry training brochures at Indian Creek BOE meeting on Monday
Edison Local is another school district in the Ohio Valley that previously passed the resolution.
Staff that choose to carry a concealed weapon on school premises must complete training monthly and re-certify on a yearly basis.
Dr. Starkey says improved response time is the reasoning behind Ohio allowing schools to arm teachers. hmmm, I am torn on this. I absolutely want armed guards are a school, but I am not sure about teachers. I want to see the "monthly training" criteria, as well. I took a training course before - it wasn't all that informative or useful to be honest. I had learned more watching episode of S.W.A.T. If there is going to be proper training, tracked and mandated, along with mental wellness checks of the teachers from multiple times of the year, I MAYBE able to get behind this. But as it sits, the I have a feeling the training will be a joke and walk through. SMH.

The answer to gun violence is always more guns. Hell give the kids guns too. What could go wrong?

Great, so if it wasn’t difficult enough to be a teacher, now they gotta worry about popping their own kids.
1st world countries don’t have these problems. Amongst a lot of other problems, such as our declining mortality rates, rising suicide rates, trash infrastructure, and increasing income inequality, I wonder if were a 1st world country by reputation only.

In virtually every job I can think of where you are at risk of being shot you are allowed to carry if you want.

In virtually every job I can think of where you are at risk of being shot you are allowed to carry if you want. I get this point. That's the first thing I thought of.... but a school? With kids running around all the time? With people coming into your classroom, sometimes at all hours. While I'm not totally onboard with arming anyone in a school, I think arming the people that are directly responsible for students and among them basically their entire day, teachers are the worst option. Plus, what do you really think the percentage of teachers is that would be on board with this?
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

Now the teachers can educate their students and then protect them if they have to. An armed man is a citizen. An unarmed man is a statistic.

Until people who really have zero experience in such shooting situations start to panic, then armed teachers who you call citizens create students people will call victims.

I'd rather carry than not given the choice, every single time. I like to be prepared. I'd also be happy to use the skills that I've learned to try and save other people's lives if the opportunity were to present itself. I wouldn't want to have something like that happen but just saying. No one should ever be forced to carry though, as that's a personal choice. Its not the 1700's where you'd get in trouble for NOT owning a firearm.
At my job we're not allowed to carry (which I disagree with) but I know they have assault weapons on the premises in case someone were to come in so it makes me feel somewhat better.

I am very 2nd Amendment, but I don't feel arming teachers is the answer. It's not their job. Their job is to teach. If you are concerned about your school's security then have armed guards or a security system. It's not rocket science.
Also: The average salary for an armed security guard is 13 bucks an hour. It's not going to break the bank to afford one of these.

I have seen training courses for carry permits, they are a joke. Teachers are paid to teach. I am all for armed guards at schools, GUARDS. Not teachers who are undertrained and underpaid. Its easy to say this when its not your kids' school

Accidental shootings raise questions about arming teachers https://www.yahoo.com/news/accidental-shootings-raise-questions-arming-052838041.htmlThat’s ok, because conservatives won’t stop until every child is armed with atleast 1 nuclear warhead.

As we sit, I don't like it. I do have an open mind and I am willing to see the testing, training, etc. that is to be proposed and mandated for a teacher to carry. If it is just the basic carry class to obtain a CCW permit, that absolutely not. Not enough training or specialized instruction or on going training and certification. We will see what happens. When I hear and learn more I will update. As of right not, not a lot of new info is being released. This is the school district I just moved too. My son will be in Kindergarten there next year.

I hear you but...Lol right......it’s easy for anyone to get their hands on an AK in the USA during the trump era. Just think about that for a second.

I was thinking back to my days in Grade School and High School.... That was a long time ago and most of my teachers at that point were pretty close to retirement... we had a few athletic types but mostly little ole men and women..
I would not have given them a gun... Never in a million years.
But, I have an alternative. Military. Yup, those men and woman coming back from Deployment and mustering out of service. They are trained, motivated and very capable. Put them at the doors (armed).
Better than having the likes Mrs. Bailey, my fifth grade teacher packing

We have our troops protecting Saudi and Syrian oil. So why not our children?

Better than having the likes Mrs. Bailey, my fifth grade teacher packing Do you know how many of our Vets suffer from PTSD and other mental illness? I think that the mental health of our Vets and the treatment they get is actually an issue that BOTH sides agree on, its not good. Vets may have the training and experience, but I am not so certain its the best idea either. Again, I would need to see what certifications they have to take afterwards, ongoing training, etc. What type of mental state are they in? Are they having monthly mental health checks? Etc. I do agree, overall its def a better option than arming teachers, but there are still questions.

We have our troops protecting Saudi and Syrian oil. So why not our children? You would think the National Guard could be deployed stateside like that but: The Posse Comitatus Act, which passed after the Civil War to keep federal troops from policing the South, limits federal troops' deployment on U.S. soil and forbids using them to enforce domestic laws. The President can deploy troops if there's an insurrection or invasion on U.S. soil. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/immigration/sd-me-military-border-20180403-story.html

I'm not sure that crime prevention and protecting children would be included or be in the category of "enforcing domestic law".
