The San Francisco 49ers suffered their first major injury blow of the season Thursday when they learned linebacker Manny Lawson was lost for the season because of a torn ACL.


Lawson suffered the knee injury late in practice Wednesday and a subsequent MRI revaled the tear. He will require season-ending surgery and will eventually be placed on the injured reserve list.

"I heard a pop, and I remember what (teammate) C.J. Brewer had talked about when he (injured his knee), so I was nervous," Lawson told the team's Web site. "I tried to test it out, but really I just had to wait for the MRI."

Lawson was a first-round draft pick in 2006 who signed a five-year deal worth a maximum value of $10.14 million. In 16 games as a rookie, including 11 starts, Lawson had 57 tackles, 2½ sacks, one interception and two passes defensed.

This season, he was coming into his own this season as a pass-rusher.

His likely replacement is veteran Hannibal Navies in the 49ers' 3-4 defense.

Ouch. I don't like to see that happen to anyone. Hopefully he can come back from the injury.

Man that's rough because Manny Lawson is going to be a force for YEARS, hopefully this won't slow him down.

Yeah, hopefully he can come back 100%. I hate to see people get injured.

But, it's one less threat we have to worry about when we play them this year!

But like I said, I'd never wish an injury upon anyone.

That sucks. Hate to hear about people getting hurt, especially these kinds of injuries.

That's going to hurt their defense, to what extent remains to be seen. Lawson was a force in that scheme.

That's too bad because speed is his best attribute. Hopefully he won't fade into obscurity like a Boss Bailey. That's exactly who he reminded me of coming out of college.

That's unfortunate for him and the 49ers...he looked real good in Week 1 vs. the Cardinals. He was one of my favorite players in the draft the year he came out.

Man that is a tough blow, I wathced the previous game before he went down. This guy is a beast, hope he comes back strong.
