By the many shows on youtube and torrent sites, there's obviously ways to record a TV show onto your computer. The question I have is - HOW? Is there a fairly easy way to do this? I'd like to be able to record some shows for my girlfriend directly w/o having to hope there's a torrent out there, but I have no idea what goes into this. I can get around my computer and electronics fine, but not sure where to start.

Thanks!

I believe most of the torrents are created in one of two ways:

1. Video capture card on the computer

2. Cable DVR box outputted to the computer

Heck, you can watch tv on your computer (I don't, but my neighbor does). He's able to record a show very easily - its right there in the application. He has cable (I have DirecTV, so not sure how to do it). His computer is newer as well - already had all of the connections to make it work built into it.

You need to get the hardware for it (which should also package the nessecary software as well). You can get TV cards that let you plug in a TV feed and play it on your PC ... or you can get a video capture card. Capture cards have a variety of connections you can use. Anything from S-video or RCA jacks to a Firewire or USB port.

My dad's computer has an RCA jack port which allows him to connect just about audio.video source he wants to his PC, and record. Mine only has a firewire connection ... but I can take whatever I want, record it to my camcorder (through the camera itself or through the RCA input jacks), and then capture it to the PC with Studio 8 software.

There a reason you want to record on the PC for your girlfriend, rather than a DVD, DVR or VCR?

Plenty of reasons...

VCR - that's funny. Do they still make them?
DVR - only good for @ home use. She's a teacher and likes to use shows in her classes.
DVD - that's what I am trying to do here - take a TV show and burn to a DVD. Some shows can be purchased on DVD, but that can get very expensive quickly.

And the next reason is that I'd have a permanent digital backup should something happen to the copy she has at work.

So, as far as I can tell, recording on your computer is the easiest, cleanest, and least expensive option to record something off the TV and burn to a DVD. Maybe I am wrong.

Ok, that makes sense then.....Wasn't sure.....if it was just to view later, I wondered why not a DVR.

I would go with a TV Card/stick like Pinnacle

Even that's a bit "technical". The easiest, and my method of choice, is I bought a dvd recorder for $75, and I just pop my freshly burned dvd into my computer and that's all.

NT - we actually have one of those (early adopter). Problem is that you have to set up the recording and then gauge how much space you need or don't have available to record multiple shows on 1 disc. You then have to switch discs out, etc. The problem with that is that many of the shows she likes have a marathon day and I can bust out the entire season in a few hours or the whole day. With the dvd recorder, you have to keep switching discs out and either miss an episode or miss the first parts b/c of the disk switch. I am hoping that I can just set up the computer to record and be able to walk away for a bit.

check out ati's all-in-wonder video cards....

actually i don't even know if they still make them but i have one, and used to record stuff....worked great, and i could choose a format that could easily be converted to dvd...

another option, would be a program called replaytv pc edition

you have to buy the tv tuner card, and it looks like its 50 bucks for a year...might be less to renew....

i believe its like the dvr (panasonic showstopper) that i have real simple to set up to record multiple shows....

then you just have to convert and burn...i would check the format though...

Attitude is everything....FEAR THE ELF!!!
