Here is a little something I wrote today in a moment of inspiration:
Be Proud Browns Fans!
Be proud Browns fans. You are part of an exclusive group of fans that are well known around the NFL. No other fanbase is more loyal and no other group of fans has suffered like we have. If you meet someone who says they are a Browns fan you know instantly know the type of person they are. Most likely they are loyal to a fault, humble, knowledgeable, have a perfect sense of humor combined with an incredible feel for cynicism and irony. These are the kind of people who have been through more lows than highs, and have stood by their team the whole time.
Can you say this for the average Steeler fan?
Most Steeler fans believe the NFL never existed before 1972. Why? Because their team was the laughing stock of the league for 40 years. They were one of the worst franchises to take the field. They even had to combine sides with the Philadelphia Eagles for a time just to stay in business. Anything before Chuck Knoll, Terry Bradshaw, Lynn Swann, Jack Lambert, and others is meaningless to your run of the mill yinzer. They celebrate Franco Harris who would scamper out of bounds rather than take on a crushing hit, yet have no respect for Jim Brown, the greatest football player ever. A man who averaged 5.2 yards per carry and set every rushing record in just 9 seasons (playing 14 games a year).
Lately more Steeler fans have come out of the woodwork due to their success. No doubt they have fielded some good teams, but what can be said about these new fans? Most cant tell you who was the quarterback for the Steelers before Ben Rot and his reconstructed face. A face that would easily appear in Vincent Price's "House of Wax". Most Browns fans know more about the Steelers than Steeler fans do because we are true fans of football. We can tell you about Bubby Brister, Louis Lipps, Merrill Hodge and Bam Morris. The new front runners know nothing more than Troy Polamalu, Hines Ward, Jerome Bettis and Willie Parker. They dont watch the games, they dont know football, they just hitch up to the bandwagon and go because it is the easy way out.
It's just different for Browns fans.
We dont need ESPN to over hype our team. We dont need follow the team because everyone is doing it. Because being a Browns fan is more than that. While the average Steeler fan might watch a quarter or two of the game and then run their mouth about it Monday morning; Browns fans understand the game of football and cherish each game that we watch.
With the changing of the seasons we remember growing up in Northeast Ohio. The crisp fall air, the trees changing color, playing football in the backyard or in the street, and the incredible feeling of being in a warm living room in front of a television in the middle of October watching your team. We remember watching the games with our fathers every Sunday. We know what its like being the only Browns fan in your class while everyone else was a Cowboys, 49ers, or Steeler fan. We live for the camaraderie between fellow Browns fan. If you meet another Browns fan there is an instant bond because you know that other person has been tested like you have been all these years. You find it hard to doubt their character, because most likely they are as sick and twisted as you if they have watched this team for their whole lives.
As the old cliche says, hope springs eternal. This year is no different. Browns fans will pack Cleveland Browns Stadium as we do every year win or lose. We will expect to win every game and if we dont we will spend most of the following week trying to recover from the loss. While we might complain internally about coaches or players, we will battle any smug know-nothing Steeler fan who comes our way trying to talk trash about our team. But most importantly we will stand by our team, our city, and our state. We will stand proud as Browns fans.
What more can you ask?
Go Browns!

This was because of the war...both sides lost a great deal of men to the armed services.

when you live in a different city, like i do, and like many others on this board, and you're walking around, and run into another browns fan, you cannot walk past that person without acknowledging it... i usually can't walk past another browns fan without at least talking for a few minutes...
lolz @ bubby brister... oh the days

Very true, I can never run into anyone around town wearing a Browns shirt or hat without striking up conversation, it is just human nature for me!

This summer the wife and i took a cross country trip. We met Browns fans in Yellowstone, Mt Rainer, New Mexico, and all along old RT. 66. When it was all said and done from stopping and talking it probably added a day to our trip. Was very nice to see friendly faces and talk about our loved Browns, where we're from and how we became fans..

Actually he played only 12 games a year his first four seasons in the league.....may want to learn your own history as well.

Aye.
Like I said I this all was off the top of my head in a 10 minute span. It just kinda flowed, so excuse the error. I am well aware of the 12 and 14 game seasons though...dont you worry Shep.

You did a great job, kid. Like Shep says all you need to do is edit and do some more accurate researching. Then, when you're satisfied with it; try submitting to SI. Who knows it may bite their editor in the behind as maybe a pretty good storyline. Such as "Hard Luck City & Fans Are Special". JMHO

Aint that the truth
I hate going to the bar wearing my Winslow jersey, and some hillbilly wearing a brand new pride of their wardrobe Pittsburgh hat or coat, holey shirt, Wranglers, and their dirty all-white cheap fallen apart tennis shoes. They start saying "Browns suck". Then when I sit there and talk football, things like why the Browns could be better in the future and players that are good for the Steelers, they give me this look of dumbness and say "I dont know the players, I just watch the Steerers cuz I enjoy watching them win."
I just smile, shake my head, and walk away.
Ive never came across another fan on any other team or sport that has said anything like that.
Another funny Pittsburgh fan saying "I like that goofy Hawaian guy with the long hair out his helmet. How you say his name again"

I'm very proud to be a Browns fan. And it's an honor to cheer on our Browns with the greatest and most loyal fan base in all of sports. Living down in Cincinnati I still routinely run into other Browns fans who stop me (normally wearing something Cleveland Browns) or vice versa to say go Browns and then end up talking about the team for a good while. There is nothing else like being a Browns fan. I'm a die hard Tribe and Cavs fan but there is just something about the Browns that just pushes me even further, gets that blood boiling a little more. Sunday is the best day of the week for a reason. I live amoungst the Bandwagoners of Cincinnati and you know what they just don't get it. They may like their team now but they haven't gone through the ups and downs that really test and strengthen a fan bases bond with the team. They don't understand how I can cheer for an annual loser so rabidly and that's cause they don't understand how to be a fan. But then again only those that don the Brown and Orange every Sunday through thick and thin really no what it's like to be a Browns fan.
