First off nothing illegal with what i need help with. I own all the dvd's/blue rays. it is not illegal to backup your own discs.

Both my boys are in the Navy and they want me to put our movie collection on portable hdd's so while at sea they can watch movies. we have a huge collection.

I have looked at different ones and cannot really decide which one is best to use.
cost really isn't much of an issue as long as it not too much. under $75 would be best.

Can't you just "copy to"? It seems to me that I did that once upon a time.

Wish it was that easy but no because of the encryption on the discs.

I have done google searches. some are trial version that put a water marker all over the movie others state they work but they don't.
i was just hoping someone has used one that they liked and worked good.

If you want to rip a digital copy of your discs, use handbrake.

It's pretty easy. There is one small thing you have to do with a file, but it's pretty easy if you just follow the instructions.

I don't know if it works with blu-ray, because I haven't used it in years, but otherwise, it's a breeze.

enjoy!

There are multiple choices, space used versus quality, DVD and BluRay require different methods to deal with the encryption, etc.

Most all-in-one, easy to use softwares do not provide the best quality or universal ability. Some will preserve subtitles, additional languages, 3-d, etc. Some will make the video look like total crap.

VCDHELP, dot com. Best source of information on the subject, they keep strictly legal, large recommended library of free tools, most excellent. Good support community.

Technically, if the backup and original are being used in two different places, that is a violation, and there is some debate whether or not the actual breaking of the encryption is a separate crime in itself. No major risk involved here, could, possibly, maybe, be an ethics or honor violation for someone military, like an officer candidate or some such.

The page mentioned is almost entirely dedicated to answering your question and has been around for 20 years or more. Hence the VCD original title, also called VIDEOHELP, dot com.

Roughly 250 DVD, 60 or so Blu-Ray, per terabyte of drive using straight image copy. No loss of quality, all features, playback on most anything.
All you need is the decryptor, and an image program. IMGBURN is the best imaging and burning program, hands down.

If you have the TB, this is the way to go.

If you do NOT have the storage space, then you need to re-encode. Loss of quality depends on size reduction, playback on PC only. Re-encoding will make it look worse, no exceptions. How Much Worse, is the question. Less noticeable on a small screen.

Max size reduction is an opinion thing, 25%, 50%, 75%,? Hi-quality tools give better results, all can be done for free. The encoder is everything, if quality is a concern. Good encoding is slow.
