My wife has a 3-year old Dell Laptop and it runs great. However, the battery is spent.

For you computer buffs out there (or those recently in my same position)....

Do I just buy her a new battery and have it installed

OR

Is there a product that is an external battery? Something that she can plug her computer into (besides an outlet smartbutts) and get about 2 hours of computer use out of? At least that way we can use it on other items too? Does a product like that exist?

Please help.

most of the time you can switch out the battery pretty easily and just get a new one... you shouldn't have to have anything installed or anything like that. You can always take it to a dell store and they can show you which one you need.

The battery is on the bottom of the laptop, it just clicks in place.

Goto Dell and check the serial number on the battery you have, it may be available for free replacement from the "defective" battery program.

If you're not able to replace the battery for free, which i'm assuming is the case for a 3-year-old laptop, search for a replacement on ebay rather than letting dell rob you. when my battery failed i was able to find a dell brand replacement on ebay for about half the price of buying directly from dell.

Batteries aren't too expensive. Look for a local battery shop or E-Bay. I know on the eastside of Cleveland (I know your in TX) but there is a shop called bulldog battery that will hook you up. They did my cell phone battery pretty cheap.

Thank you all! I've had good luck on ebay and think I will look there.

Anyone ever hear about a product like what I mentioned, like an external power supply? I wonder why those aren't on the market yet, they have to exist!

Check the free replacement program anyway, you said it was three years old, and the program includes batteries sold from April 1, 2004 and July 18, 2006
