Tough week. How do you address and handle this guy? Not sure what the OC may do, but I thought some best practices might be shared if someone has seen him handled.

I do not know much about what is planned, but I think we have a better chance of handling him going right at him rather than trying to run away from him. can rolling pockets help? How do you whip an outstanding player like this? Because I do believe the NFL can neutralize anybody on the field, or at least minimize them. Any thoughts?

Go, Browns!

Yes, please do. And can we embark on a truly ambitious cloning program for him as well?

That is my idea of reliable continuity if we could always have a JT. Not sure that gene-editing option is ready just yet.

I think you have to plan for both Watt and Clowney, but don't over plan.

Don't let those guys dictate what we do on offense.

First thought is quick passes and screens, but we gotta do other things too as I'm sure Texans expect us to do quick passes and screens.

Kitchens.. keep calling what you've been calling my man. Let this o-line earn their paycheck this week.

Run more 12 and 21 personnel geared towards the right side and either give help or chip him as often as you can.

Also, after watching the game last light, he lines up pretty far outside more than I thought - when he does that, run between Hubbard and Zeitler and hope Hubbard can seal the end (and that Chubb beats the LBs or we get a lead block against the LBs). Or screen over him.

The better we contain Watt, Clowney, and Mercilus, the better odds we have.

quick passing

I don'think it's just dude, it's dude, plus Mercilous, and the other one.

What, so you don't think you are going to play in the "NFL"?

This is the NFL, of course you are going to see good, talented competition.

Don't go making the opponent better than they are without making them make plays anyways.

I watched last night's game, and they kept moving Watt and Clowney around. I'm pretty sure they do that to keep other teams from being able to game plan for Watt being on the right and Clowney the left.

I would watch all the tape on NE vs HOU games. They always seemed to do a great job of neutralizing Watt.

I'm hoping our run game can be effective ... we'll see if that helps

Establish running game and hit 'em with the play action!

As well as all the stuff people said above like screens, etc.

I saw some of that, but didn't realize how much. O Line gonna need to be busy and right. Just getting the ball out quicker will help.

I think the best way to play those two is run a no huddle offense with them both on the field. Wear them out and frustrate the crap out of them with quick 2 second passes and a lot of WR/TE/RB screens and stuff over the middle.

Can you imagine three 10-14 play drives that are no huddle with no substitution?

They would be on the sideline sucking on oxygen tanks.

I like that. And wear them down a bit. We used to sweep and pitch going at sidelines a bunch. Physically they can take it, but grinders for drives that give us points would help.. Their offense is a blitzkrieg.

Illuminating and sobering, Grateful. That is lots of sacks; probably don't roll those numbers up without the offense's help. BM will need to be decisive.

Some of the old stuff keeps showing up in offenses. We have the horses for it. The old-fashioned throwback passes are money at times. If you sting a D with one or two, they can be game breakers; just complicates everybody's head on D a bit with something else to worry about. Right up there with screens and misdirection stuff. Kitchens seems to be able to beat a loaded box or at least try. fingerscrossed fingerscrossed

The o-line will give up a sack at some point, and it'll likely happen Sunday.

Doesn't phase me though, as sacks are a part of the game.

Biggest thing is having more points than them when the clocks hit 0:00.

Robinson and Hubbard can hold their down run blocking. We have to stay with the run and Baker needs to improve on play action this week to win.

This is actually one of the first things I thought about when I read the thread the other day.

Some years back, J.J. Watt was probably the best football player I had ever watched. He was that good. He earned all three of those defensive player of the year awards. He's fallen off some and probably doesn't deserve another one (that would be Aaron Donald), but Watt is still one of the few defensive players in the league that can single-handedly screw up your whole game plan.

New England one year just completely neutralized him. They used delayed handoffs, screens, misdirections, and used Watt's natural aggressiveness and let himself run out of the play. Other time's they'd double him, or have the TE chip him, or run the play away from him. It was a masterful game plan. They may have done it multiple times against him but I particularly remember this one.

But yeah, that's probably a good place to start. Of course, that defense as a whole is more talented this time around, which makes it a lot more difficult.

And it is better and dangerous. They have a full menu of chaos for their defense. We need to execute well. We are not going to neutralize all their weapons, but we can not play into it. I feel if we can have success driving it, we can be in it. But we must make them adjust to us and perform, if that is possible. But per your post Haus, it has been done so it can be done.
Thanks for the reminder in this thread. thumbsup

Monday night ... these guys did not maintain gap integrity when rushing Marcus ... it hurt them ...

Bake will have to be Bake and move around in the pocket ... he may also have to make some plays with his legs running as opposed to just “buying” time ...

That will be HUGE ...

Great concept! Hysterical scene. Makes every male cringe in the room. This or an elephant gun.

This is going to be a very interesting game, Dawg.

Kitchens is doing an outstanding job of giving Mayfield the outlets needed when things down field are covered.

I think we're going to see a TON of that 3 Back sets. Watching the previous 2 games you could SEE the LB's and Corners standing there uncomfortable and not knowing where the hell to go. It's confusing.

NO TURNOVERS.

If Mayfield can keep this rhythm going, we gotta a really good chance.

NO DROPS. HOW do you explain the lack of drops since Haley's gone? Unreal.

Houston hasn't beaten ANYONE the last 8. They caught Dallas when they were falling apart and the 1st Indy game was only 4 games in for Luck coming off the shoulder.

They also get INDY next week. The team breathing down their throats for the Division.

TRAP????????????????????????????

J.J. Watt alone is a tough customer. But when you add in Whitney Mercilus and Jadeveon Clowney you have three headed monster. All too often teams concentrate on Watt as the other two take over.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

The last play Monday night Mercilus had the trainers .... i would never root for injury ... but if he would have stood down it wouldn’t have bummed me out ... *L* ...

I only brought up watt cause his knees are hurtin and he didnt get in a full practice this week ... thats the best way to slow him or the other two u mentioned down ...

We can compensate for out OT’s ... we may only be able to send out 3 into the patterns way more than we like ... but it may be necessary ...

My biggest concern is GAP INTEGRITY on D ... especially the natural gap MG creates almost every single pass rush ... he can’t go WIDE THIS WEEK ... if he does ... WERE IN TROUBLE ... he or whoever’s coming off the other edge can’t do that ...
