Took the annual pilgrimage this AM.A chilly day, perfect for football and the practice looked crisp.
I watched the D go thru individual drills up close.A.Davis again was limited, but the ankle he has doesn't appear to be serious. He better get heathy soon,L.Williams looks outstanding. Our LB's are young, fast and athletic. This is going to be a good group, with or without Willie Mac.
Peak is much bigger than I envisioned, and he has some giddy-up.He and Wimbley lined up on the same side in 11 on 11 and rushed vs.Shaeffer and Vickers(?)That's a mismatch. It looks like KW is going to be moved around alot this year in nickel and dime packages.
Eric Wright looks very good.He and Bodden at corner allows the D to be much more agressive. With Holley as the nickel it's a good lineup.
Sean Jones is becoming one of the leaders on D.He helps Pool alot.Hamilton is backing Jones up at SS and Adams is behind Pool, way behind.I wouldn't be surprised to see another safety brought in.
The D-line needs work,no surprise there.Pittman looks like a keeper, the other guy is going to have a tough time sticking.S.Smith isn't a DE.But he wasn't brought here to be one.I don't think the other Smith practiced today,at least I hope not.Big Ted isnot a practice player.Parker relieves him alot .We need Roye back, badly.Look for anothe wire pickup here.
We have a good D coaching staff and some very good talent in the back end,but I think the line may hold us back.
The offense spent alot time going into, and out of,the end zone in 11 on 11.With Winslow in shorts and JLewis only getting a few reps, they didn't look good.It didn't matter who was QB'ing, athough Frye was much better than the others.
Let me just say here that I believe this QB competion and the coin flip to be total BS.I'm not a big Frye fan,but Anderson is horrible. It has to be some sort of motivational tool RAC is using.
I pity Joe Thomas. He's a tight end in LT body. He's going to suffer thru some growing pains early in the year, but you can't teach what he has,thank-you Mr.and Mrs.Thomas.
Mckinney played LG with the one's,and Sowells and Friedman were on the right side.Mckinney is a good guard.Perhaps he's not pefectly suited for the left side,be he can do it.Tucker played both RG and RT.He's smaller this year, that could be good or bad, depending on the reason.
The O ran an unbalanced line with Sowells,Shaff and Thomas on the right side coming out of the end zone. They had a coupla nice plays with that formation. All in all the Qb's had some good pockets to throw from.
Our recievers are, well, uninspiring.Wilson and BE would have trouble catching the clap in Bangkok.Sanders had a nice catch, and followed that up with a drop.JJ didn't play much, they seemed to be resting the old guys today, but he welcomed Wright into the NFL with a nice block.
It appears at some point this season,we'll be starting three rookies,2 or 3 second year guys, and alot of 3-6 year vets. The team is getting younger, faster, and much more athletic.Gotta hand it to PS,he struck the Mother Lode this year.

This year hasn't started yet, but I already can't wait for free agency next year when we can throw a huge chunk of change at the DL and turn this defence into a serious force once and for all.

Thanks, Phil (and Butch) for managing our cap space so effectively. Just when we need it most, we've got the largest in the league.

Funny but very concerning.. Why in the world are NFL receivers dropping balls??? This boggles my mind.. They better figure it out quick or we are not going anywhere and BE is another wasted top pick.. Man I hope this kid turns it around and turns it around quick.

I guess I'll do the update from the evening practice:

-BE and Kellen had a one-upsmanship contest, with each of them making a few exceptional catches.
-The best play of the day, to me, came when Quinn was working with the first team (?!?!?) against the second team defense. Edwards was matched up with Holly (I believe). BE did a double move and streaked down the sideline. Quinn heaved a laser right at him and Edwards reached up with one hand and snagged it. Amazing play. Also, Edwards was doing some PR work. As well as signing and toying around with Winslow, he would throw the balls he caught into the crowd, earning him some fans from those fans.
-Anderson seemed to get a few more first team snaps than Frye.
-Sean Jones was a beast on the special teams drills (I think I have some decent photos of those if the camera worked properly).
- DeMario Minter was active and practicing for one of the first times, I believe. He is VERY fluid in his movements. His man-to-man skills looked okay, but his open space movements were great.
- Phil Dawson and Dave Zastudil have great jobs. Zastudil did about 10 minutes of work, faking kicks, taking his steps. Dawson kneeled on the sideline. They worked on punt returns and Ainsworth did all the kicking as those two watched.
- Speaking of punt returns, Cribbs looked pretty good. Steptoe had a little trouble this evening in taking that first step after catching the ball, almost thinking about where he should go rather than going. McDonald was pretty good and Barclay was okay in the few reps he got.
- I wasn't at a good angle to get a view of the lineplay with any consistency, so I won't even comment on what happened and who got beat, sorry on that. If I think of anything else, I'll post it.

As long as BE has a big 90 catch/1200 yd. year in which he drops maybe 1 or 2 passes tops he can drop all the practice balls he wants. In other words, he better improve this year if he doesn't want to be labeled a bust by media and fans.

Thanks for the report...and Im so happy to read this. I hope he gets a fair shot....we are stacked with young talent at DB, esp. CB all of a sudden....just think about it:

Bodden
E.Wright
K.Wright
Holly
Baxter
McDonald
Minter
Perry
heck even Fontenot is looking decent

who do you cut? and who is "just" the #5th CB? and probably not active or just STeamer?...I´d move Baxter over to FS as Pools safety net and let McDonald, Minter and Perry duke it out for the last CB-spot

maybe we can even deal K.Wright if somewhere else CBs get injured like we experienced last season...hey, he started and is experienced etc

Its a beautiful predicament to have Django is that this year we are able to cut guys that are "decent" and keep guys who are good.

My bet is that we stick with the top five guys you listed

Bodden
E.Wright
K.Wright
Holly
Baxter

McDonald to practice squad and Minter get thrown on the PUP while we evaluate whether or not GBax's comeback can be successful.

Perry and Fontenot are on the bus. i never liked Perry that much anyways.... he's very quick but he bites on moves way too easy.

Thanks for the report.

Glad to hear the word on Pittman. I guess every year we all sort of 'adopt" a longshot player...and Pittman is my guy. He was a good player on a good LSU defense. His attitude is one like a person would have if they had a constant minor toothache...always seems a bit irritable when he is on the field.....I like that

Did you even watch Saturday's game? He actually went across the middle, caught the ball in-stride, didn't jump for the ball AND broke a tackle after the catch. He also laid out a LB on the Cribb's reverse (that went for 16). Just a preseason game, but he looked great.

TO led the NFL in dropped balls (oh...and TDs)...the Cowboys should get rid of him too.

That's almost as bad as everyone screaming Frye sucks and will never be a NFL QB after the marked improvement he showed Saturday.

I'm not a Frye fan at all Coach, but I think he played a good game Saturday. He threw the pass to Braylon, which was one of the most precise passes I've ever seen him throw.

My main concern with Frye is his decision making. It still seems to be a tad questionable still.

*LOL* ... so 15 passes agains a mix of KC's starters and scrubs in one NFL PRE-SEASON GAME means he has turned the corner and will now be a good NFL QB??

OK Then .... lets talk in Mid october shall we????

I think that with the OL that we have, and assuming Jamal Lewis provides an effective ground attack; then we will see CF have a much much better year this year.

My mom could step in and play QB with the way the OL seems to be playing and with the help of Jamal Lewis. But much like with Frye, I wouldn't question her toughness, just her decision making. :P

Triple,

Yes, I watched the game and he did well and threw one hell of a block! All I am saying is that it seems like most of the articles coming out are saying that our receivers (not just Braylon) are still having problems catching the ball. I love BE, I have his jersey and I think he will be ok. I just wish I would see more articles that say our WRs are catching everything thrown at them.. Drops will happen, I know this, but we have had our share and would like to see our WRs consistantly catch the ball.

Marvin Harrison drops 6-8 per year (his lowest season was one)...Chad Johnson drops 9-12 (lowest year was 3)...T.O. drops about 9-12...the best of the best drop balls...it's the nature of the game...the key is to have a team stacked enough that the 8-10 passes your #1 drops every year won't be too damaging. For the record, Braylon was credited with 8 last year (I thought he dropped way more).

Ah Tyler no matter what Charlie does, Diam will be ready for Brady to take over and most others on this site will as well. It has been completely impossible to evaluate a QB with the O-Line we have had since 99. I am not saying Charlie has turned a corner, as I dont truly believe he has the talent it takes to be a successful starter on a good team over the long term , however, nothing would make me happier than to see him play his ass off and make the Browns FO sweat over their selection of Quinn.

One thing for sure is that Charlie is a tough SOB and he wont go without giving it his all.

Despite the recent past results of QB competition, gut feelings and all that crap, a good, legitimate competition between two young players is ALWAYS a good thing. Raw talent, polish & skill set aside, the most talented team doesnt always win and the league is full of examples of that at the QB position over history.

They need to have an alligator arm stat. Seemed like every time he felt the pressure of a DB coming...he'd alligator arm it...

He also needs to fignt for the ball. There is no excuse for a guy his size not winning nearly all of the battles.

Add these to things to the dropped balls, and Braylon would be the cause of my balls getting dirty.

I would have kept Parcells over TO any day of the week and twice on Sunday. But the Cowboys will pay dearly for that one.

But BE has done better with dealing with what he has said in the media to a great degree and has shown some improvement on the field as well. And I've never been accused of "being a Leon lover".

But I'll give credit where credits due. And though it's only been one pre season game,he looked better both recieving and blocking. The future remains to be seen, but in his limited playing time Saturday he looked good!
