Don't know if we have any true crime junkies in here, but police in the Sacramento area have made an arrest to quite possibly the most infamous serial offender in the history of the country.

There are so many links to this story out there that I didn't want post just one. There's a bunch of solid reddit threads going as well.

Right now the consensus is that he is suspected of 12 murders, and 50+ different cases of rape.

On top of that he owned up to being the Visalia ransacker, who burglarized may homes prior to the murders.

For those who don't know, EAR/ONS stands for East Area Rapist/Original Night Stalker. All this happened in the late 70's and early 80's. They have had this guy's DNA for years after confirming it in 1997, when the technology finally caught up. Everything was connected to one profile.

The details on the arrest are scarce right now, but it sounds like someone in his family came forward with information, gave a DNA sample. When the sample proved to be very close, law enforcement staked out his home, and got a DNA sample from his garbage. It came back as a clear match.

It's pretty amazing stuff.

For those interested, I can't recommend the ID channel series that came out earlier in the year, as well as the podcast episodes from Casefile and Unresolved. It's absolutely fascinating stuff.

This guy was the stuff of nightmares, and I can't imagine, how his victims, many of which are still alive, are feeling right now.

And an ex-cop. I'm glad they found him.

I read about this story. On one hand I'm glad they finally caught him... on the other hand I'm ticked he got to live the better part of a fairly normal life, wish they would have caught him many years ago... but better late than never.

Glad they got him.

Just curious, were the Feds involved in this, or just local cops/detectives.

On top of a few different jurisdictuons. Going to be interesting to see how it all plays out in court.

I think the best part will be the victims/survivors getting their two cents in during the trial.

I watched the YouTube documentary and the accompanying DA interviews/press conferences yesterday.

Get ready for some kind of elderly-infirm-incompetent-near death display by the defense.
