Hell I can't even find the table anymore!
Listening to Siius radio over the last few days I must have heard the " he brings...to the table" at least one hundred times. What causes this vocal hypnotic compulsion to use the same expression over and over? "I'm not taking anything away from him..." "We take it one game at a time" "He brings a lot to the table..."
There are many of these overused expressions out there which do you hear most often?
The American people will never knowingly adopt Socialism. But under the name of 'liberalism' they will adopt every fragment of the Socialist program, .

One of my personal favorites and I here it every NBA draft.
"You can't teach size" or " you can't teach speed"
Never mind the fact they still need to be able to play.

"He's got all of the measurables" ...... too bad he still can't play. "We've got to play our A game" ..... as opposed to the rest of the games we'll just sleepwalk through ..... "That team is a lot better than their record" ........ and even though they haven't won a single game .. they're at least as good as a 1 win team.

"He redefines the position" There are so few players in a lifetime that "redefine a position" -maybe 4 or 5 in your life- and yet I hear every season about 22 guys that redefine

And "one of the draft's few sure things" How many guys have been touted this way only to ride the pine or get bounced out of the league?

"He's putting on a clinic out there" ...... and I didn't even realize he had a medical degree .... "He plays bigger than his size: ..... yeah ... we see 5'9" NBA Centers all the time ...... "He's really on the hot seat now" ..... and hot ain't cool ...... even in the winter ...... "He's a wily veteran" ...... really .... he's not old ..... just wily ...... "It ain't over till it's over" ..... the score's 80-0 ...... if it ain't over now .... it's damn close. "We made a statement out there" ........ and as soon as it clears the PR folks .... we'll tell you what we said ..... They really hve to win in the trenches" ......... do I really have to go into this one after the past 8 seasons .......

"We have nothing to be ashamed of" Translation: We haven't figured out how to blame the refs for this yet.
"We gave it our best effort" Translation: It was about mid way throught the first quarter when we realized we were dead meat.
"We need to get that fire in our eyes". Translation: I hope they acutally show up and try this week.
"I want team oriented guys" Translation: Take a good look at your roster because anyone who I don't like or didn't bring in and has no talent is gone.
"We're looking to get younger" Translation: We're cutting cost but we won't say we're doing that because we want to be able to jack up ticket prices at the end of the year.
"This is a rebuilding year" Translation: We're going 4 - 12 and picking in the top 5. Deal with it.
"His job status will be reviewed at the end of the year" Translation: He's getting canned the minute the season's over if not sooner.
"We gave up a little bit in this trade but we hope it will work out". Translation: Yeah we gave up a bunch of high draft picks, and if this doesn't work out my butt is going to be unemployed.

I'm bored so I'll translate a few more, even without the aid of the BSPN translator
"He's really on the hot seat now" Translation: He's out of a job and we all know it. We're just not sure when he's getting canned.
"He's a wily veteran" Translation: As soon as we find someone that's younger and better, he's unemployed
"It ain't over till it's over" Translation: We can't admit we gave up on this game. That would just look bad
"We made a statement out there" Translation: We wipped the floor with a 2 - 14 doormat, now we want someone to tell us how great we are and how we're going to win a championship.
"One of the draft's few sure things" Translation: We're in love with his physical attributes but we really don't know about his head and we're basing our decision on the physical. If it's the mental then we're all screwed.
"I gave it 110%" Translation: What you expect me to admit that I didn't try?
"That team is a lot better than their record" Translation: We're trying to cover our own lazy butts
"He has a lot of upside" Translation: He's a journeman who will play for a few teams, collect some nice paychecks, and if he lands with the right team, he'll actually start, otherwise he's riding the bench his whole career which will last about 3 - 5 years.
"I'm not taking anything away from him..." Translation: Get out the tape recorders and notebooks because I'm about to burry him and tell you how much better I am than him. Don't bring this up if I lose or get creamed
"We take it one game at a time" Translation: We're already out of contention and there's no real nice way to tell you we've packed it in.
I want to thank God first of all. Translation: The good WR drew double coverage and that safety tripped while trying to run me down otherwise I wouldn't have scored that touchdown, heck I might not have even got that first down.
"It's not about the money" Translation 1: Hell yes it's about the money and I want to be (over) paid a king's randsom for playing a child's game.
"It's not about the money" Translation 2: I know I'm not that good and I'm really only this hyped because of the system or team I'm on, but I want people to be more focused on what I make than what I can/can't do and how bad I play.
There is no I in team: Translation: I'm going to start ripping my teammates, my coaches and everyone in this town I don't like, while there may be no I, there is a ME and that's what I want everyone to pay attention to.

He has "gamespeed" Translation: He's really fast. He has hands like concrete, can't catch a cold, never met a mirror he doesn't like and always blames the QB for anything that doesn't put 6 points on the board, but he's really fast.
"This is our year" Translation: If we don't win, somoene is getting fired so try not to act suprised when it happens ok? We're just going to let you guess who until it actually happens.

Hockey:
"We have a good bunch of guys in the dressing room, you know, we work hard and give it 110 per cent every night. Once we get in the playoffs, you know, it's a whole new season and everybody starts off fresh."

If he's a vet that's been through 13 years or so in the NFL, and he's still productive, he's wily. The average NFL career is still 3 1/2 years. I have no problem with "wily" as long as it's used properly.

Listening to the NFL Channel on Sirius before the draft, the most over-used expression was by far:
"take a flyer on him"
This must have been used to describe every player in the draft. Callers would ask who they thought their team would draft in various rounds. Sure enough, they'd come back to say "Cleveland should take a flyer on him. He'd be a solid pick up in the 3rd round."

I cringe everytime an announcer says a guy has "had good success"
...always have been, always will be...

"This play is huge."
"This instant replay review could be huge."
"That missed extra point could be huge."
Listen to how many times announcers say the word HUGE during a football game.....
