So were moving on the 29th and the place we are moving to has their own cable system with like 40 channels. Theres a bunch of condo's and apartments and for some reason they set it up like that. Anyways I can get a dish and thats the route I am taking.

Both are pretty close in price and the packages are similar. Which has the Big 10 channel? Both have NFL Net right?
Has anyone had real issues with the dish going out? I want a HD receiver, anyone have one? And if so how is it? Any customer service nightmares?

I am leaning towards Direct TV. They have the Sunday ticket on sale for $69 for 4 months and you get their top package free. If not I am going to get the $49 one + $10 for the HD receiver + $5 for a reg receiver for the bedroom. The guy I talked to stayed on the phone with me for like 1/2 hour explaining everything and checking all the channels I wanted. He answered every question vs Dish Net chick trying to force me to sign up right then and there.

Had DISH. HORRIBLE service. Customer service and satellite service. Constantly goes out and when scrolling through the channels in the menu, it is sllllllllllllooooooooooooooooow.

Go with Direct TV. I've had a few issues here and there, but it is WAY better than DISH.

My dad does contract work for Dishnet, I'll ask him what the benefits are of Dish Net over Direct. They both have the NFL network.

Yeah they both seem similar and are very close in price, so it's just who to pick. The wife will flip out if she doesn't have the 300+ channels we have now,,and FU Time Warner b/c I get my NFl Net back
So all is right with the world, hehe.

The real good thing is my new place faces the Direct Tv Sat and they also told me in September they are adding something like 60 or 100, something like that HD channels. So I can finally use the new TV I bought.

If you need the Sunday Ticket, I believe you have no choice but DirecTV.
If having the most HD Channels possible is important, then go Dish Network.

Both have NFL Network and I *think* they both have Big 10.
I'm not sure about DirecTV, but I know Dish has STO in HD... The Tribe is fun to watch in HD

Satellite will go out in severe weather... I've put RainX on my dish and it helps keep snow off it in winter.... either way it's a rare problem if the dish is aimed right as we don't get that many days of severe weather.

I've had both providers over the last several years. I was with Dish Networks first, then dumped them for DirecTV because they didn't have the one local channel that the 1st preseason Browns game was being shown on like 3 years ago. I stayed with them with no problems for a long while but recently switched back to Dish when I got my HDTV back in January because Dish, by far, has the superior HD package, whether it is satellite or cable... none tops them. I like the on-screen menu interface for Dish better as well.

As for customer service, I've never had any real issues with either. There were some things with DirecTV that I disliked when I left them (such as finding out after the fact that the DirecTV PVR that I bought at BestBuy is really only a lease and that upon leaving them I had to either return it or pay an additional $200 to them for it, and that getting that PVR activated constituted starting a new contract with them that I had to buy out of at $12.50/month for each remaining month on the contract), but I never had any problem with with either company... they were both always quite courteous and prompt in helping me the few times I needed them.

I'm in a similar situation, will be moving to an area where it's Direct TV & Verizon 1.5 Mb DSL vs. (gulp) Time Warner Digital Cable and their high speed cable internet.

I too was wondering how often Direct TV "goes out" - bad storm, wind, rain, snow? How "bad" does the weather have to be - are we talking like the most powerful 1-2 storms a year, or like a once a month type deal? Additionally, I'm not too excited about the Verizon DSL, and it's speed.

Leaning towards Time Warner with high hopes that they get this NFL Network fiasco taken care of.

It's virtually the same cost for either option.

Any suggestions/recommendations?

You can not go wrong with Direct TV.........the NFL Sunday Ticket works well for me, seeing I am about 1,000 miles away from Cleveland.

Be prepared to cut the neighbor's trees down on occassion!

Rain X, good idea! I am on the 2nd floor and have a big balcony so I don't think it will get too much snow on it. but then again I am in the snowbelt so,,,

HD is important since I just bought a new HDTV. I have it hooked up to regular cable and am not sure but do I still receive like 3-5-8 in HD? I watched nascar and it looked like HD. STO I know is in HD too. Do you get STO with Direct TV? I love the Tribe and need to see em as well as OSU. Dish didn't know if they were getting it when I talked to her, well, she had no clue wtf I was talking about

Direct TV told me they launched a new satellite and in September their HD is going to expand to either 100+ or 60+ HD channels, I forget what he said. Thats why I am getting the HD reciever so I can enjoy the TV.
I am thinking against the NFL Ticket just b/c I will be at every home game and the away games are always on here, so it really wouldn't be worth it. I do kinda want it for the late games to choose what game I can watch vs whatever team this select on CBS/FoX, or flipping to another game as the Browns are on commercial. I do remember someone saying they only broadcast one game a week in HD, is that true?

Humm, I think I covered anything. Like I said the Dish chick was a lil pushy and that kind of tarnished their image right off the bat for me. She kept saying "Is that what ou choose?" "Ok, lets sign you up, whats your credit card #?". All I wanted was prices vs the Direct TV guy answering everything I asked, went out of his way to get me a good deal for switching, and I guess if I said I was refered the referrer gets $50 and I get $50.

My decision was to go with Dish because they carry locals here in Erie and Direct doesn't. I've been very happy with Dish.

Yes.

Not sure if it's in HD, though.

I won't have an HDTV until the end of the year, so I have not been paying attention.

You're going to need patience in signing up with DirectTV. Their customer service people are clueless. Took me 10 phone calls and two installations to get things right. Finally got a supervisor who got the job done.

But the product was worth the hassles. And they're sending up another satellite this month that will add a slew of new HD channels.

I'll be hooking my 360 up to it and we can watch pre-game stuff too.

Beer, do you have Time Warner now? We had Comcast and they were bought out a year ago. Instantly my prices jumped up pretty high. One thing you can negotiate with them over prices, esp if you say "I wanna give Dish a try" Thats what I did when they took over and gouged me and I have a incredible package. I have HBO, flix, Starz, channels 1-200 and high speed internet for $50. Their On Demand blows compared to Comcast too which sucks. But their customer service is a joke and quite a bit my cable freezes up and says "Channel Will Be Available Shortly" Their Internet though I do admit has been worry free. It only went down once for 3 days when a fiber optic cable snapped somewhere and they credited my account.

Local Channels: To my knowledge, noone carries the local channels in HD, only SD. You will need to get a separate HD antennae for those. Fortunately, Cleveland was the first major city to go All-HD, so you can get every local channel in town in HD (and some have multiple channels). I picked up an inexpensive indoor RCA antennae for under $40 that works just fine for me (it is soooo weird to consider myself having the most advanced TV I've ever had and be reverted back to using rabbit-ears ).

DirecTV mentioned the new satellite thing to me when I was dumping them. I don't know if it is a sales ploy or if it is truth. All I know is I had already signed with Dish by tha ttime so it was moot to me. I do know that I prefer that one bird in the hand over the two in the bush. If DirecTV ends up with more HD channels, well then I can switch again when this contract is up next year. Until (unless?) that satellite comes online though, they can't touch Dish's HD package. Having an all Kung-Fu HD channel friggin rocks, lol!

I wouldn't judge anything on the sales people you talked to, based on my experiences with both, what you described is not indicative of anything. On top of that, if you call back you will probably end up speaking with completely different people with completely different personalities.

Don't count on it Beer. I've contacted them numerous times and it appears they are not budging on their demands. Basically, TW wants the NFL network to be a sports add-on and NFL wants to be in the regular sports package. It doesn't look like either is going to give in any time soon. Keep that in mind when choosing.

DirecTv - I've been a customer for about 6 years now. The only issue I've ever had was no service during a bad rainstorm.

Ohh I know, but I can't stand pushy sales people. And my company has a sales dept and I can't stand when they rush people just to get them to buy. All I wanted was information and she asked me for my Credit Card at least 3 times, I didn't like that. Most use some sort of script so usually if you call back you'll get the same except a different attitude or personality. I will call them back at work and ask a few more questions and say Direct TV offered me a better deal to see what I can get, then call Direct TV and say Dish beat them by $15 a month hehe.

We had Dish for 7 years and just dropped them. We started with Dish 500 and service and reception were great for 6 1/2 years. Then things got ugly. Last Novemeber we were notified we could no longer have Cleveland local stations per a federal ruling. Ther went all Brown's games. They also wanted to update our dish to their new Dish 1000 at no charge and their installation crew would do the work.

We had more problems with Dish 1000 in 7 months than I did with Dish 500 in 6 1/2 years. I contacted them via the internet as trying to reach them on the phone is real tough. They use an automated trouble shooting to solve issues.

Their tech support said I had to pay for a tv guy to come out and checkout our system at "our" expense. I said your people put it in you are responsible to resolve my problems. If I had cable they would check it out at no charge to me. I gave them 6 weeks to send out a guy. Meanwhile we keep losing the signals several times a week on sunny days, cloudy days and if we hear thunder off in the distance. It made no difference what time of day or night.

Last Saturday we had Armstrong Cable hook us up. When I called Dish about quitting, I got a story about they would send a tech out to checkout our dish hookup at no charge to me. Then they added a $10 discount a month for 10 months to stay on with them. I said where we you people 3 months ago? I quit.

I am hoping to have a tv tower up and hooked up for the first Brown's game in August. A man has to do what he has to do, the hell with our politicians and their dumb rules.

Remember that night you got drunk and streaked down the street? Your wallet fell out of your pants

Snow, it's amazing what they will do for you when you give up and quit them isn't it? Time Warner is bending over backwards to keep me. They are offering me everything except a new car. What I didn't tell them is we can't even get Time Warner in my neighborhood and I said that I have a Dish now just to see what the are offering Now I am going to get Direct TV and Dish batteling for my biz. They are pretty set on their prices but I will still try.

BTW, for internet,,anyone have AT&T DSL? They offer their own high speed internet in the new development So I am looking for the best option there too. Their Internet is cable and $29.99 first and $39.99 each month after plus $5.99 for the modem. I may steal Comcasts modem though hehe. I do have my own DSL modem from SBC too hehe.

I have ATT internet at work, and am happy with it for the most part. It did go down (on their end) about a month ago for 10-12 hours --- very bizarre, you could access some sites, not others. I lost my outlook email, and Yahoo email, yet could get into my domain server site and access that route.

So how is the monthly cost as compared to Time Warner?

I live in Columbus and ever since Bungles got good again I've been contemplating switching to a dish so that I am guaranteed to see the Browns play from my living room. Every time they aren't shown I HAVE to see them, so I go to a bar that is showing the game. This always leads to at LEAST 3 hours of fighting w/ my wife. At one point I was close to hooking a friggin' VCR up at my favorite bar so I could tape the game and watch it later.

I tell my wife that w/ NFL Sunday Ticket I can get every Browns game and even tape it, to watch later, after we are done w/ whatever pointless shopping excursion (that just HAS to be done during game time) is over with.

I am so prepared to make this switch to a dish. Just want to know how it costs compared to Time Warner Cable.

You can only get Sunday Ticket with DIRECTV. So you best just go to a bar

Get Directv. You can get NFL Sunday ticket, baseball, NCAA Football, soccer, hockey, racing and other packages. I recommend the service package, in case your dish gets hit or blown out of alignment by the wind. It also covers your receivers in case they go out, all replaced for free when covered.

I've had Directv for 5 years and I'm very happy with it. The other services, cable and Dish network, can't beat it. You can also get the referral for $50 and a free Dvd player for you and $50 for the other person with Directv. If you don't know anyone with Directv IM me.

Good Luck, you won't be sorry!

When I worked for Warner they were nice enough to give the police a service van to do a sting in the projects..That made me very happy.

I have Dish TV with one of their super dishes. It is a bit larger but I have hardly any problems with outages.

When using a cable company you are subject to outages of both your cable and internet service even if there is no cable service. They run off of power from the electric company and are suppose to have their own battery backup. I know a lot of local providers have a terrible record when it comes to preventive maintenence and that causes outages even in good weather. I would ask around to see how dependable they are.

I use Direct TV and have NO complaints what so ever with them. I got every Browns game last year with the NFL package. I also get my local channels ( I do not have HD though ) and HBO for a very nice price. NFL Network is also nice to have.

I have Dish network and have been very satisfied with them. (I don't have an HDTV, so I don't have to worry about the HD channels - yet).

My bro in law had directtv for about 5 years, but he switched to dish network 2 years ago, and they prefer dishnetwork. I've never had DirectTV, so I can't say much about them

As far as satellite going out? It happens here maybe 2 times a year - mainly when the lightening storms are rather severe, and my guess is it doesn't matter who your provider is at times like that.........?

It seems like a slight majority of the people on here prefer Direct TV.......I've never had it, so I can't speak to the benefits/disadvantages of it. All I can say is I am very happy with Dish Network.

I have DirecTV and Sunday ticket. No problems whatsoever.

I also take my old dish to the football games here in SD so I get Sunday ticket for the early games. Quite nice.

The only "problems" I have is that I wish I could get local cleveland channels (for sports news only). I guess I could pay extra. The other thing that bugs me is that when the Browns preseason/preview/postgame shows come on Fox Sports Ohio, they are blacked out. That is a bit of a bummer. It has to do something with FCC and NFL licensing, but it is disappointing.

I will occasionally watch Cleveland Rants...(only when desprate).

Ahhhh a MasterCard I see....Shall we add the insurance policy on there too????

I don't know a lot about Direct TV. I have had Dish for about 6 years. For me, it was about packages at the time. And at that time, Dish had a better package for my tatses...it had more History, TLC, Discovery type channels in their packages for a lower price. Being in the Cleveland area (and not too far away from you Eckley's Corner ring a bell)....I didn't need NFL Ticket, as if the game is blacked out...it is blacked out for NFL Ticket for us as well. And that was the only advantage I saw from Direct TV. I have had no complaints concerning my service. My sister has Dish, and we just got my parents out of the stone age and their TV antenna to Dish. Soon I will be upgrading my service and receiver...so I may end up switching to Direct TV if I can get a better deal and the channels I want....but I will investigate that when the time comes.

Ohh yeah your not too far at all. I am moving over to Tamarac off Lost Nation or Lake Shore. I'm pretty excited to move and hopefully next time it will be a house.

The Sunday Ticket was a nice thing to get and the deal right now is Sunday ticket + every channel they have for $69 for 4 months. Then when season is over I cxl and get the $49 one. But like you said I live here and go to every home game so I don't need it to see the Browns. It would be cool for away games so I can get more of a variety for the late game. As long as I have the Military, History, Discovery, ESPN, STO, I am happy

I live out here in Aurora.. Lots of people in my complex have one or the other dish service..

But almost all of them complain about what happens during the winter months.. Lots of outtages caused by weather.

I'm one of those guys that just hates Time Warner Cable. I hate the way they've treated thier customers.. I find the attitude they take when asked about the NFL Network offensive and frankly, I don't understand how they could have paid so much for the assets of Adelphia then treat them like so much crap. (the customers are the REAL assets they bought)

As you can clearly see, I'm pretty angry with them,,, so if anyone was gonna go dish, you would think I'd be the prime candidate. But here's the rub, until I find out that a method is available to keep the system up in inclement weather, I'm not buying into the dish at all,,,,

Besides, the option of DSL vs Cable for internet doesn't excite me much either.
