Man, Ive looked all over, and cant find much info for my situation so I thought I would check here. I am currently trying to adopt my step son. His father has not made contact with him in 2 years (Child is 2 years and three months). The two were never married, but he did sign the birth certificate. He does not pay support because my wife never got it set up due to that entitling him to visitation. (It was an abusive relationship)

Anyway, does anyone have the slightest clue what i should do from here? FYI, we are from Indiana.

Yes I do, In the state of Ohio, if the minor parent has no contact with the said child, then you can adopt.
I just have one question for you.....Have you or your wife tryied to contact the father?....The reason I am asking is, I had a step son who never knew his father untill he was 3 years old. I contacted his biological father and told him that Nick was calling me daddy, I am very strong about him being apart of his son's life....To make a long story short , they are best friend's now and i couldnt be happier, I still get to talk to Nick and he is 14 years old now, Now I do not know your situation, nor is it any of my bee's wax But If he wants to be in his life I strongly suggest to let him! If not , then adopt him, care for him, and treat him as he was your own.

From some one who know's...If you need any more info please feel free to PM me.

Just a warning here...
You adopt him, in the future, you and your wife split up, you are the one liable for child support.

VERY, VERY important point.

Be sure that's what you want to do.

My wife had a daughter before we met, I was her father for 10 years, but my wife and I are no longer together.

It has made things very awkward. Not trying to scare you, but just be sure.

Anyway, there are plenty of resources to get it legally done, check legal aid.

Ya, but do you really want that legal obligation? Plus, what if (devils advocate, I hope all marriages last forever) They get a divorce, he gets pinned with support for his adopted kid, then he meets a new woman?

How is that woman going to react when she finds out the court says he has to pay for a kid that's not his?

So I guess, just review all your options man, but good luck, I really hope things turn out well.
