Gee to leave Vanderbilt for Ohio State

BY RALPH LOOS
staff writer

Chancellor Gordon Gee is leaving Vanderbilt University for a job as president at Ohio State University.

Gee announced the decision to Trustees today. Vanderbilt is holding a 3 p.m. press conference to publicly announce his departure.

"This was by far the most difficult professional decision that I have
ever made, said Gee in an e-mail message to the Vanderbilt community.
"I want you to know that I am not leaving Vanderbilt. Rather, I am
following my heart and returning to a place that I consider my home. My
decision is that simple and that complex. Over the past several weeks,
members of the Board of Trust and the University family have done
everything possible to make me feel valued and appreciated. I assure
you that I do."

"We are grateful to Chancellor Gee for his efforts over the past seven
years and wish him well in his new endeavors," said Martha R. Ingram,
chairman of the Vanderbilt Board of Trust. "This is a remarkable
University, with the most deeply committed and loyal students, faculty,
staff and alumni. Their accomplishments, and the support of our many
friends around the world, have made every member of the Vanderbilt
family proud and excited for the future."

Ingram added: "The Board looks forward to working with every part of the
Vanderbilt community in planning a thorough and inclusive process to
select our next Chancellor. In the meantime, we are blessed to have an
extraordinarily talented senior management team in which we have
complete confidence."

The Executive Committee of the Board of Trust will meet later this week
to begin the transition process.

According to the Columbus Dispatch, the Ohio State board will vote on their choice on Thursday.

Media reports out of Columbus this afternoon say that the board has talked Gee into returning to Ohio State, where he served as president from 1990 through 1997.

Gee has been chancellor of Vanderbilt since 2000.

Great move for Ohio State! As a senior at OSU, I look forward to the upcoming school year with President Gee!

From what I have heard about him, it appears he is a great choice. Everyone seemed to like him when he was at OSU during his first term

Cooper was hired in 1988 and Gee was hired in 1990. Am I missing something?

I always liked Gordon Gee. Nice guy. Always wears bowties. If I remember correctly, he even used to go to campus bars and meet students too.

Gee was the President that started the higher standards for OSU. I really believe with President Gee, OSU can move up to the level of Wisconsin/Illinois. For example, the 2011 OSU class admitted only 54% of the applicants. We are getting better and better...

From a strictly football standpoint, this is awful. He absolutely refused to fire Cooper, and didn't think beating Michigan was that big of a deal.

That's where, I guess, I kinda got confused about Cooper being allowed to stay/be there as long as he did in the first place,...these two go back a long way.
