Video game expo gets toned down for '07

By MATT SLAGLE, AP Technology Writer
Sun Jul 8, 2:09 PM ET

The video game industry's annual showcase is saying goodbye to scantily clad booth babes, extravagant multimillion dollar exhibits, blaring lights and pounding music. Celebrity appearances from the likes of Paris Hilton or Snoop Dogg are a thing of the past, too.

This year's version of the Electronic Entertainment Expo, renamed the E3 Media & Business Summit, will be a toned-down affair as organizers hope to have a far less flashy discussion on new and upcoming video games.

The event, which starts Wednesday, looks to be more like a country club getaway, an invitation-only gathering complete with luxury beach-side hotels, sushi restaurants and meetings in private conference rooms.

To put it more diplomatically, "It's about the quality of connection for leaders of the industry," says Michael Gallagher, a former telecommunications policy adviser under the Bush administration who now heads the Entertainment Software Association, the trade group that puts together the show.

After last year's expo, organizers decided it had become too big for its own good. With more than 60,000 people cramming into the Los Angeles Convention Center, there was a feeling that the needs of no one — be it the media, retailers or video game publishers — were being addressed particularly well.

"It had gotten out of control and needed to die," said Mike Wilson, chief executive of Austin, Texas-based game publisher Gamecock. "It was hot, techno was blasting everywhere, there was no place to sit and the microwave cheeseburgers were $8. It just wasn't pleasant."

Wilson's company wasn't invited to the new E3 that's being held in a handful of hotels along the beach in Santa Monica, Calif. He isn't the only one.

Only about 30 of the largest video game software and hardware companies are attending, down from the hundreds that packed the event in previous years. Also missing will be the army of small-time bloggers, zealous game fans and others who somehow managed to infiltrate the trade-only event.

As someone who was at the first E3 in 1995 and attended every one since, Dorothy Ferguson said she believes the new format will benefit the 3,000 or so people attending.

"It kind of got away from what was important, which is really the content," said Ferguson, a vice president of sales and marketing for NCSoft Inc. "At the end you felt like a pinball in a pinball machine. It was sensory overload and it was really difficult to hear anything."

This week's event, which runs through Friday, will focus on the industry's largest players, including No. 1 game-software maker Electronic Arts Inc. and console makers Microsoft Corp., Sony Corp. and Nintendo Corp.

The big story last year was Sony's decision to price PlayStation 3 at up to $600 and whether it would catch on with consumers. Nintendo, meanwhile, promised to bring more non-gamers into the fold with its interactive Wii. Microsoft continued to build on its Xbox Live online gaming platform.

Since then, both the PS3 and the Wii have been unleashed on the marketplace. (Microsoft launched its next-generation console, the Xbox 360, in 2005.)

Analyst Ted Pollack of Jon Peddie Research said he doesn't see any losers in the current crop of consoles and believes they will be a boon for the industry for at least the next five years.

"They're all doing well in their own way," he said. "All three consoles will win battles in the console wars and at the end everyone will be left standing."

And now that all of the hardware has been available for a while, consumers can expect to see a flood of new video games.

Josh Larson, director of the online game review Web site GameSpot, said he is looking for this year's show to shed more light on software that takes advantage of each system's unique capabilities.

He also expects more details on big video game franchises like "Halo 3," "Grand Theft Auto IV" and "Super Smash Bros. Brawl" as well has more information on Sony's strategy to compete online with Microsoft's Xbox Live service.

Other top games could include Konami's "Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots," a "Killzone" sequel from Sony and the latest chapter in the "Final Fantasy" saga from Square-Enix Co.

"It's ultimately about the games," Larson said. "The PS3 box can look real shiny and have lots of powerful specs, but it's ultimately the game experience that causes you to go out and get that gaming system."

In another twist, the ESA is hoping to appeal to the general gaming consumer later this fall. The "E for All 2007," an event that will be open to the public, is scheduled for Oct. 18-21 at E3's former home, the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Well, I used to work in the industry. I was a manager of a video game store in Toledo while I was in school. My general manager said he could get me tickets to the show but they wouldn't pay for my airfare. Since I was a college student, I couldn't afford the airline ticket.

In the past it wasn't hard to find tickets to E3. Like the article said, it was bigger in the past few years. Tickets were easy to find.

G4 will have lots of coverage starting tomorrow night.

Unfortunately, E3 won't be what it used to be. They scaled it down, cut out the public, and most importantly, cut out a lot of developers. I'll still follow it, but it's a shame that they changed it so much. It got expensive, too much so for smaller companies. Maybe that's where a change could have been looked at instead of scaling it all back.

I thought they had a new trailer made and everything for it .... damn that sucks. But then again, I'd hate to play the same game over again, even if it does have better (sorry way better ) graphics.

The trailer people were looking at and mistakenly thought was for a new game was just clips from the movie Final Fantasy Advent Children.

Yeah Microsoft was last night. Sony will be at 2pm Today (EST).

Sony did have a 2-1/2 hour [closed to the public] demonstration on Killzone 2. A 2 min trailer has been release and it looks amazing, even though the game is only 40% complete.

Here is the link web page

I think it's funny that they made a big announcement that Madden will be online for the Wii. Madden was online for the last-gen systems, and it took a second time around on a next-gen system before it made it's way online.

I was watching the press conference in the other room, but I don't have a digital box in this room, so I shut it off for now.

That game just looks.....wow. Awesome. 2008 can't come fast enough.

The HD trailer will be available after the Sony press conference this afternoon in the PS store, so I'll have to download it when I get home from work.

I taped Sony's press conference and will watch it later, but you can download the trailers from the PS Store now. I watched the Killzone 2 trailer online already, and the game looks flat out amazing. Didn't disappoint with all the hype surrounding it, which would have been easy to do.

I taped a lot of E3's coverage on G4. And I ain't saying this because I've owned a PSX, PS2 and PS3, but....

Looking at the game, Killzone 2 looked more impressive than Halo 3.

Saying that, Halo 3 comes out in a couple months, whereas Killzone 2 still is only half done and still looked amazing. The quality of the graphics were stunning, and the lighting effects were just awesome, especially the light coming off of the gunfire.

Watching Sony's event, there's a buttload of games I will be adding to my collection soon. And I was surprised when they announced that UT3 (Unreal Tournemant 3) is a PS3 exclusive this year. The game looks badass! GT5 is a must along with SOCOM, Drake's Fortune looks nice, Madden, GTA4, Killzone, HOME, a game they showed call inFamous looked nice, COD4, Haze.....just title after title they kept showing looked good. I'm excited of what is to come in the next year for the PS3.

They also said that there will be 80 downloadable games on the PSN coming out. I think it was 80....maybe it was 100....anyways, quite a bit. Some of which looked interesting, like Pain, and a very odd but very unique puzzle game called echo-something. I forget.

The best annoucement wasn't even a game DP. It was the annoucment that they signed a deal with Epic to redo the Unreal Engine 3 for the PS3. This is one of the biggest hurdles at this point in time for developers.

With the PS3 Sony created and entirely new system structure. Most of the game engines were talyored torward the generaly used structure that you will find in the PS2, Xbox and the 360. As of right now a developer has to put extra dev time into making games to take advantage of the PS3 structure. Becuase the PS3 has not sold well developers were cutting corners because the extra dev time would not pay off for them with sales. If the PS3 had a 10mil user base it wouldn't even be and issue but it don't so it is.

Recently there was news that Madden and NCAA 08 versions will only run at 30FPS on the PS3 but it will run at 60FPS on the 360. This is just one example of a developer not wanting to spend extra money when the user base is small. I don't blame EA one bit, it's business.

Sony has to step to the plate and make the tools that are designed for the system so Developers can take full advantage of the system with out the extra dev time. The deal with Epic and the UE3 is a step in the right directions, because it was Sony in fact that made the new system structure not the devs.

Yeah, I've been watching the G4 coverage. I'm only about 1/3rd of the way through, but I've been pretty impressed by some of the PS3 titles on the way. Graphically, they look great... lets hope the story/gameplay follow suit.

I don't have any of the new systems as I'm still trying to finish up all the Xbox games available. I also play my PC and my DS. Plus, I generally like to wait for 2nd or 3rd gen hardware. I'll probably go with a 360 do to the shear volume of already available games, plus it will have Halo.

If your going to get a 360 wait until they have the 65nm chip. That should help prevent your system from overheating and getting the red ring of death.

As much as I play my 360, I've never gotten the red ring. My games do periodically freeze up and claim the disc is dirty, but other than that, sheer gaming satisfaction

Which company of the Big 3 were you most impressed with?

I watched all of Nintendo's and Sony's conferences, and part of Microsoft. I did see G4's review of Microsoft's conference and their game demos so I have a decent amount to go on.

I gotta say Sony has the most impressive lineup coming out for the PS3. Most of which were exclusives. UTIII exclusive this year to the PS3, SOCOM, Home, GT5, Little Big Planet, Uncharted, inFamous, MGS4.........and of course, the best looking game hands down from E3........Killzone 2. All PS3 exclusives. That's enough games to own and enjoy for a LONG time, and that's not including 3rd party games that are looking great as well.

Nintendo had a few little concepts like the Wii gun and that board for Wii Fit, but their game line up was less than stellar. The usual Mario games are coming like Mario Cart, Super Smash Bros. and Mario Galaxy. Other than that, what else really was there?

Some pretty looking games are heading to the 360 as well, but some aren't exclusives and will be on the PS3 as well. Halo 3 of course will dominate the gaming world, but graphically Killzone 2 has it beat. Let's hope the gameplay matches the graphics. It will have to be in order to compete with Halo 3. A couple other shooters who's names are slipping my mind looked pretty good, but I can't say that they blew me away.

If you're talking about content, the PS3 has the best lineup coming out IMO.

Halo has never really be a superb graphical game. The graphics are good, but not what makes Halo the phenomenon that it is. It's the gameplay, for single player and multi player. If Killzone can match that, especially online play (if it will have it) then it can compete. Graphics are just a portion of what makes a good game.

Honestly, the most complete game to come out for the new gen systems is Rainbow Six: Vegas. That game has it all!

Which company of the Big 3 were you most impressed with?

To me, I would say Sony. I really liked Killzone 2, Uncharted, and (possibly) Heavenly Sword. Excellent graphics and the gameplay looked like it would back it up. Having Ut3 exclusive rights is nice, but it won't last long. The strength of Sony is their internal development houses which are turning out some great stuff recently. I don't know... with the exception of graphics, it's so hard to judge that stuff. Graphics can only do so much for a game.

For the Xbox, of course it's Halo that has me the most excited. Mass Effect (Bioware) should rule, of course.

Mario Galaxy and Metroid are the only games that get me excited about a Wii. I was REALLY excited about the Wii in general, but after playing one at my friend's house for a week, I was left a little unimpressed. It didn't work as intuitively as I was hoping.

There's a TON of cross-platform games that look great. One of my most anticipated games for ANY platform is Bioshock (Xbox/PC). I just think that game is going to rule. Burnout 5 will be great, and I was pretty impressed with Fracture (first time seeing that game).

So I would say Sony impressed me the most so far. They had 9 hrs of coverage of E3 on G4 and I've only gone through 3 hrs so who know, maybe I'll see something to change my mind.

I was watching some more of the coverage just now. They had a viewers poll, with Sony leading the way. They also interviewed 3 different guys, one of which was that Chris Gore guy who was covering E3, and 2 out of the 3 said Sony as well. They said they had the best line up coming out.

IGN.com is reporting that there will be another Metal Gear Solid game- an online game for the PS3.

PlayStation Premiere: Metal Gear Solid Online Set for PS3
The online battle will continue on the PS3
by Anoop Gantayat

July 17, 2007 - We were satisfied when just one Metal Gear Solid game was on the way (MGS4). Then Konami and Hideo Kojima threw us a bone with the announcement at the PlayStation Premier press conference today of Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops + for the PSP.

But they weren't done there apparently. Famitsu.com reports that following a short demo play session of MGS4 at the event, Kojima announced that Kojima Productions is currently preparing a PlayStation 3 version of Metal Gear Online, the online battle game that appeared in MGS3 Subsistence. The site reports that Kojima will play the game live at next week's Metal Gear 20th Anniversary Party event in Tokyo and will share specifics on what players can expect.

We're a bit unclear if Metal Gear Online will be a standalone release, or if it will be included as part of MGS4. Hopefully, all will be clarified next week.

Yeah, I would agree with this as well. Sony definately had the most exciting games. I have to wonder about MS's strategy. They seemed to show only games that would be released for THIS holiday season. Where was the stuff for 2008? They had a demo of Fable and the first level of Halo 3 (actually playable), but that was behind closed doors so none of us got to see it. Apparantly, those demos were spectacular.

MS has a ton of sweet titles coming out each month this year, but for 2008 and beyond, it looks like the PS3 will have all the good stuff (although I'm sure that's probably not the case completely). I think MS should have shown more 2008 and beyond titles. It probably would have helped the strength of their show.

Oh well, at the end of the day, it won't matter much to me. I constantly peruse the gaming sites, reading reviews, watching videos... even for the systems I don't have. E3 is more of a hype builder, but it's fun to see what's coming. Besides, 95% of the games I'm interesting in are multi-platform anyway... speaking of which, I couldn't believe how awesome Call of Duty 4 looked!! I'm so glad they're moving away from the WWII setting. I'm also pretty psyched about Mercenaries 2. I'm currently playing the first one for the Xbox... what a sleeper hit that is. Like GTA, but in a war.
