Quote:
When the Miami Dolphins gave Ndamukong Suh the largest contract ever for a defensive player in free agency, it was with the expectation that Suh would elevate the defense from a unit that wound up in the middle of the pack last season to one of the best in the league. Suh would be a monster on the interior and, because he requires so much attention from blockers, free up the rest of the defense to make plays in one-on-one situations.

THE LATEST FROM SPORTSLINE
The impact of Romo's injury on the Cowboys
Two weeks into the season, things have not exactly gone to plan. Only nine teams have allowed more total yards than the Dolphins. The run defense, expected to be a big strength considering the talent along the defensive line and Suh's particular brand of penetration, has been dreadful. Miami is 27th in rush yards allowed through two weeks.

One reason for this, according to a report from Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald, is that Suh has been disregarding play calls from defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle and instead freelancing on his own:

The same could be said for the Dolphins' defense, which is somehow worse with Ndamukong Suh than it was without him in 2014.

A big reason why: Suh, who for the second straight week was a nonfactor, strayed from Kevin Coyle's script.

The Miami Herald has learned that Suh freelanced at times Sunday, creating confusion on the defense. By taking matters into his own hands, the Dolphins' $114 million man took a bad situation and made it worse.

“I couldn't tell you,” Suh said, when asked to explain his uninspired play. “At the end of the day, we have to go back to the drawing board and figure out what we want to run so guys can make plays and go from there.”

This is a thing that happens on occasion in the NFL whether we hear about it or not, but a massive free agent signing being the one to do it -- and then not making plays when he does -- makes it a slightly bigger issue. It's one thing to break play calls if you're blowing up the other team in the backfield. But if you're putting yourself out of position based on the play call and not making tackles -- which is what's happening with Suh so far this season -- it's time to re-examine some things.

Read this earlier, was going to post it, but decided against it.

However, since you posted it, my thoughts lead me to this:

Now that he's got this huge fat contract, is he becoming a diva? The "coach don't know so I'll do my own thing" kind of person.

What a joke. I was hoping we'd take a stab at Suh, but no regrets if the man can't or refuses to fulfill his assignment.

No excuse for that, regardless how good you are or how much you're getting paid.

The problem with giving HUGE contracts like that means they're way above everyone else on the totem pole

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

Dolphins coach Joe Philbin disputes the report that Ndamukong Suh was "freelancing" in Sunday's loss.

"I didn’t see anything of the sort," Philbin said. "Not sure where that came from." The Miami Herald, a highly-reliable source for all things Dolphins, stands by its report. "Freelancing" or not, Suh isn't going to be the issue for Miami's defense this season. Sep 21 - 1:56 PM

I forget the examples we've had before, maybe Warren.. But with sack specialist DT you often run into the issue of them wanting to go after the QB regardless of the playcall. Whether Suh was calling his own shots or not... it is kind of a typical issue for disruptive players to get out of position.

We've had the same issue before (Rodgers). The guy decided after he came here he didn't want to be a 3-4 NT.

What system does Miami run? I ask because if they are asking the guy to play very differently from the way he did before (the way that earned him his fat contract), then there's a shared responsibility there.

Another desperate throwing of huge money at free agent signing, they'll be in cap hell in a few years.

Just another example of why you shouldn't build your team through a plethora of "big splash" free agent signings.

It's funny, because they just tried that with the Mike Wallace off-season.

Ah yeah it was Shaun Rogers. I forget about him sometimes.

Luckily the dolphins run a 4-3 with Suh at the LDT.. So they aren't morons sticking him at NT like we did with Rogers.

Frankly I've never liked Suh. He is a dirty player who injured Delhomme in preseason and I believe a few others over the years for us.

Suh and James Harrison are two guys I wouldn't mind never hearing about again.

If feels like most of these huge free agents signings are disasters. Well, the player may end up playing decent sometimes, but the teams are paying them to be the best at their position. It's hard to live up to that money.

OK, so they do run a 4-3, which probably means Suh can attack and penetrate often as opposed to just eating up space and blockers on the line.

So he's just playing bad with no excuse of freelancing. Within the system? I don't know which would be worse. One is fixable.

Not our problem.
