I simply don't see it with those guys. They all don't come close to the size/speed combo of Matthews. We need a guy to develop as WR2 with some WR1 upside in case Gordon bombs. Burleson is a stop gap, Little is as good as gone anyways. Both won't be here in 2015. Then what? I really believe in taking and developing WR BEFORE you need them. Think Jeffrey in CHI, Sanu/Jones in Cincy. We did it the other way around and suffered from poor WR play the past seasons, pushing projects like Little and Gordon onto the field way too early. That's not the way to go imho.

Matthews is a threat in the RZ and has the unreal acceleration of Gordon if he has room up the middle. His game is suited to both between the 20s and RZ, that's unique and I don't see that with any of the guys you mentioned. Street is a WR2 only without the quickness. The others are "at best" the Verrett's version of WR, slot guys who may develop into WR2. Even a guy like Bess, in his prime years, was a modest WR2

Anyway, thanks for the good discussion. You know I always appreciate your input.

Looking over the updated cbs rankings, a lot of my mid/late round targets moved up, ugh. Urban, Aikens, J.White, Bullough, Norwood got bumped up.

They dropped Yankey all the way down to 119 XSF dropped to 37 at least and should drop further. Can't believe McGill is a top 75 guy there, lol

P.Gaines, Rice, is at 56 now. I watched some games because bbd likes him, but don't see him as a press man fit. He def is a natural in coverage, a pure cover CB, but he doesn't like tackling, he avoids it. That's a real problem imho.

I agree the Matthews is a great catch-and-run type prospect... not as good as Blackmon was but similar style. I just look at the fact that you say the value/depth in the draft is rounds 3/4, you've already traded away your round 3 picks and now you want to unload the round 4/5 stuff. Yes, Matthews would be drafted to eventually be a starter... I guess if you can live with 4 what you consider top guys and nothing else then go for it. I guess I'm just greedy. You will not get Matthews and Skov... that's a pipe dream. If you want Matthews, go get him, just save a pick for an ILB and for an interior lineman you're comfortable with, because they will probably be on the field.

Not sure about Skov not being there. He's been labeled a 2 down ILB only and then there's his medical. He is getting some sleeper hype lately and should go top 100, both in our mock and in teh real draft.

I have picks 71, 121, 127, 132, 145, 180 and 197 left, so not all is lost yet. If I burn a late 4th for Matthews, I'd still have enough ammo to move up for Skov and could go as high as late 3rd for him.

If I can get Skov at 71, the question becomes: is Matthews worth burning 121, 127,132 and 145?

QB Bortles
OT/OG Martin
CB Fuller
ILB Skov
WR Matthews

pick 180
pick 197

Only major need OG (or also FS depending who you ask).

I'm not crazy about Bortles but we needed a QB. The other 4 would be a good haul but do you really think you can go up to get him with the 4 picks you listed? IF you can do it, yeah do it. That's a lot of good players.

I really don't see the interior OL need anymore with Z.Martin mock drafted and Mack back. Between Greco, Pinkston, McQuistan and Gilkey there should be an "ok" RG and enough depth to roll with

Btw, I don't expect Matthews dropping past pick 70, the scenario was virtual. If I can get Skov at 71 for sure, why not trade up for Matthews, say 71+127 and go get Skov around pick 85-90 with the other 3 picks (121+132+145)? Of course, the risk is Skov dropping that far, but I think he could

49ers at 56 took C Richburg and Chargers at 57 took WR D.Adams

Well, again, I haven't lost a pick yet in quantity. If you pick a player at 106 in a "deep" class, he's probably not much better if at all, then the guy you pick at 127, right? After all, the class is deep...and that's the kind of deals I did until now.

Keep in mind that I normally prefer to trade down and am prospect happy myself, but I have identified targets I really have strong opinions about and stick with it. If I can get a (personally) top 30 ranked player like Matthews for picks 71+127 (my offer to the Bears who want to trade down from 58), you just do it. With the Panthers picking at 60 and needing a perimeter WR, I consider this max value for a player of his caliber.

Our roster needs quality, not quantitiy. We have plenty of developmental talent. What we need out of this draft, after Farmer sleepwalking through the FA period, are 4-5 day one ready contributors at certain positions, not another dozen guys "to develop". That's my approach to this

I wasn't really knocking your approach as much as I just don't like trading up as much as you did where you were at.

If you have targeted players and feel they are worthy of the trade ups, then by all means.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

I really like Matthews (WR) but I mentioned it before...perhaps I'm only paranoid but he does kind of remind me of Robo...just doesn't create a lot of separation in my eyes...like Devin Street as well..kind of long legged in his stride...kind of how Josh Gordon appears (deceptively quick...though Street was never known for speed) Like Coleman as well from Rutgers...though he has seperating issues and sometimes concentration lapses as well...but then again that's why these guys aren't 1st rounders...they are rough in some spots...BTW love the mock draft...I don't mind one bit trading up to covet a player that you love and fills a void as well...seeing normally our browns just wait around then play rock scissors paper when the draft card gets issued to them! I think you will do fine...you have ILB WR and S still high on your list...which for good reason...also later in the draft if you still need a RB late and haven't gotten to it...what about Wilder Jr from FSU? Def. Raw but kind of reminds me of Ricky Watters (def. Not the elusiveness Ricky had) but just a strong kid

I question Marquis Lees toughness and his injuries scare me. I think he, like Josh Gordon are a lot faster than 40 times would indicate.

Matthews is plenty fast to seperate, he's NOT another Robo. Just watch one of his games, the guy just flies away like Gordon if he has two steps to accelerate.

Anyway, I missed out on Matthews and am bummed about it, because I thought I'd was near a deal with the Bears GM, who's officially an idiot. So he turned down 71+127 and countered with 58+194 for 71+106...I would have preferred that over my original offer, as again I would have not lost a pick, but my 106 was already traded away. I made him another, better than my initial offer and the moron just picked his guy without even replying. The Colts didn't really want to trade down and asked way too much

Update:

Round 2:

#33 Giants (from Texans) - Austin Seferian-Jenkins, TE, Washington
#34 Redskins - Jace Amaro, TE, Texas Tech
#35 Seahawks (from Browns) - Joel Bitonio, OT, Nevada
#36 Raiders - Ra'Shede Hageman, DT, Minnesota
#37 Giants (from Falcons via Texans) - David Yankey, OG, Stanford
#38 Buccaneers - Morgan Moses, OT, Virginia
#39 Jaguars - Kelvin Benjamin, WR, FSU
#40 Vikings - Dee Ford, DE/OLB, Auburn
#41 Bills - Scott Crichton, DE, Oregon State
#42 Titans - Stephon Tuitt, DT, Notre Dame
#43 Giants - Allen Robinson, WR, Penn State
#44 Packers (from Rams) - Jimmie Ward, S, Northern Illinois
#45 Lions - Kyle Van Noy, LB, BYU
#46 Steelers - Chris Borland, LB, Wisconsin
#47 Cowboys - Kareem Martin, DE, UNC
#48 Ravens - JaWuan James, OT, Tennessee
#49 Jets - Troy Niklas, TE, Notre Dame
#50 Dolphins - Carlos Hyde, RB, Ohio State
#51 Ravens (from Bears) - Deone Bucannon, S, Washington State
#52 Cardinals - Demarcus Lawrence, DE, Boise State
#53 Rams (from Packers) - Marcus Roberson, CB, Florida
#54 Eagles - Donte Moncrief, WR, Ole Miss
#55 Bengals - Marcus Martin, C, USC
#56 49ers (from Chiefs) - Weston Richburg, C, Colorado State
#57 Chargers - Davante Adams, WR, Fresno State
#58 Bears (from Ravens via Saints) - Lamarcus Joyner, S, FSU
#59 Colts - Jeremiah Attaochu, OLB, GT
#60 Panthers - Jordan Matthews, WR, Vanderbilt
#61 49ers - Martavis Bryant, WR, Clemson
#62 Jaguars (from Patriots) - Tre Mason, RB, Auburn

8 picks left. My BPAs are (in no order) OG G.Jackson, DE/OLB T.Murphy, ILB Skov and FS T.Brooks. Skov is the target, but if Gabe Jackson is sitting there at 71, I'd really have to hesitate for a moment

Of course, Jimmy G. is also still around...

What are your thoughts?

Skov is the clear BPA for players at a position of need and you are meh on acquiring another interior OL. I'd go Skov. Our D lacks playmakers. JMO.

Just great

So much for that plan...Broncos picked Skov at #63, that didn't take long.

Now that the "quality" I fully believed in is gone, I'll go with the "spaghetti quantitiy" of taking two and hope that one sticks At ILB, I'm now probably going to draft two of Kirksey, C.Jones, P.Brown and Bullough. I'll probably try to trade down from 71, but if Gabe Jackson is there, I'll just take him and plug him in at RG. T.Brooks is a decent fall back option, as is Murphy. Marcus Smith is another guy I really like in that range

Thoughts on the new situation? Roll the dice on Jimmy G.? Gotta re-think my whole strategy now

I wouldn't take Jimmy. I would look to take RB,WR,TE or FS at this point. Anyone one of those could be a contributor the team could use. Terrance Brooks like you said would be a good add at FS.

I'm not a big Bortles guy but I like your first 3 picks.

No, don't draft two QBs that need a lot of development... won't happen for either of them.

Terrence Brooks and Gabe Jackson might be best bets at 71. Personally, I'd go either 71 FS Brooks or Dion Bailey.

For the 121... either WR Jarvis Landry, Abbrederis, Street, Gallon, or Herron or OG Cyril Richardson or Trai Turner.

Take 127 and grab ILB Christian Jones or Preston Brown or Max Bullough.

Grab a guard or WR, whichever you didn't take at 121 with 132.

At pick 145, take either Arthur Lynch or Crockett Gillmore if available.

180 and 197, whoever your pet prospects are.

Good plan, but no RB? I'd rather take one at 145 than a 3rd TE. We will see...

I was just warming up with the idea of Garoppolo at 71, lol. He IS a system fit, but not sure he offers much more upside than Hoyer.

I love Gabe Jackson and hope he gets picked before my pick, because he's not a good fit for the ZBS, but at RG it might work, though Steen or T.Turner are better fits at a lower price.

There isn't much at S, so Brooks makes sense even though it's a "meh" pick. I really like D.Johnson (NCST) at FS later on or Tre Boston (UNC) as another SS/FS tweener.

Really makes me regret not offering a bit more for Matthews. I'm sure there are plenty of WR2 still to be drafted, but non had that kind of upside and WR1 appeal.

I like Landry, his hands are probably the best in the class, but his lack of speed is a serious red flag.

I'll have to watch Street, as his track numbers are better than I expected.

I'll also watch some of the pass rushers now. I haven't seen enough of both Smith's and Murphy. I haven't watched any DL, so not sure K.Martin or Quarles would be BPA candidates

Someone, anyone...watch this and tell me this dude isn't worthy of a 3rd round pick:

http://draftbreakdown.com/video/marcus-smith-vs-miami-2013/

So sick. He lines up everywhere. Sets the edge/not afraid to get physical, incredibly aware and smart through trash, has that unique "zip" to the QB only natural pass rushers have. I know we don't need a pass rusher (then again, you can never have enough right?), but this guy, in that game looks much better than anything I ever saw from Mingo, College or NFL. What a nightmare. It looks like a highlight vid and it's just a cut up of ONE game. Must watch !

yeah I watched that game... Marcus Smith and Preston Brown both played their butts off.

I like Marcus Smith and Chris Smith (ARK) both as 3-4 OLB. Either one could bump Groves I think. I think most people have both those guys in the third.

pick 71 is wide open as of now. Brooks is somewhat the front runner, but it's not set in stone...

Round 3:

#65 Texans - Dominique Easley, DT, Florida
#66 Redskins - Philipp Gaines, CB, Rice
#67 Raiders - Bashaud Breeland, CB, Clemson

3 picks to go and some thoughts after more tape study:

- Trent Murphy is a Paul Kruger clone. He probably needs a season or two, like Kruger, but he will be a fine DE/OLB

- DE/OLB Chris Smith, Arkansas, was disappointing to watch. He looked AVG at best across the board

- otoh, DE/OLB James Gayle, VT, is a sleeper. He has a great first step and speed rush and his run D is much better than written about. He lacks rush moves, but has a good motor and he was probably the most consistent rusher I have seen so far. His very consistent career stats over 3 seasons reflect it too. Good mid round player

- in search for a perimeter WR Cody Latimer looked best of the rest along with Norwood, though I haven't watched Abbrederis yet. Herron I liked too, but not sure he could play outside. It was a mistake being so cheap with Matthews, he was worth it, as I see a clear drop off in talent after him.

- Paul Richardson looks like a track guy playing WR and haven't seen much else than a go route from him. Is he Mike Wallace or Travis Benjamin? Probably something in between

- T.Brooks is a really smart, consistent and reliable S. He can line up in the slot and has a rare mix of physicality and athleticism for a DB. He hits like a SS and has the speed of a CB. He is not the biggest playmaker, he has poor hands for the INT, but he attacks the ball and doesn't sit just deep like Gipson. His awareness and feel in coverage is pretty good. Very underrated. He'd be an upgrade on Gipson for sure and thus is the front runner for pick 71, as good, consistent S are hard to find these days. Browns tried the cheap route with Bademosi, Hagg and Gipson and it's still a problem. Time to invest a little more, even if it's not a sexy pick. There's not much else in this draft for FS, as Reynolds and McGill are undraftable imho due to their lack of physicality and tackling ability. Maybe some CB conversion players like EJ Gaines or D.Johnson, but they'd be projects at FS. Brooks is as day one ready as it gets at FS. His cbs page also has his PC from the combine and he seems like a pretty smart, likeable and intelligent young man.

Ok guys, huddle up, I'm OTC:

Round 3:

#65 Texans - Dominique Easley, DT, Florida
#66 Redskins - Philipp Gaines, CB, Rice
#67 Raiders - Bashaud Breeland, CB, Clemson
#68 Falcons - C.J. Fiedorowicz, TE, Iowa
#69 Buccaneers - Jimmy Garoppolo, QB, Western Illinois
#70 Patriots (from Jaguars) - Trent Murphy, DE/OLB, Stanford

I really have a hard time deciding between Gabe Jackson and T.Brooks, simply because it's really tough to bypass Gabe at 71....thoughts?

Concussion-prone safeties scare me a bit. It'd be tough to double-dip on OL this early in the draft, but I think it is what I would do here.

Is this the only 3rd rounder you have left?

I just re-read some posts...

If that is the case, you may want to pull the trigger on Yawin Smallwood and shore up the ILB position..

Yeah, it's going to be Brooks. Position value and scheme fit are the kickers.

Gabe is a question mark in a ZBS, even though I think he'd be up to the task, especially as a RG, but he had bad combine numbers across the board, though he looks better than that on tape.

Brooks otoh, is the versatile SS/FS/sCB tweener Pettine seems to prefer. I really like the consistency of his game. In that regard, he looked better than both Pryor and HaHa, who in turn are better playmakers.

Here's my reasoning: Browns were 8-6-2 at halftime last season, 7-2 in the first 9 games....read that again. The DBs aren't the only culprits for it (lack of running game, lack of pass rush in crunch time, bad QBing, bad coaching etc didn't help), but they were part of the problem. If you think we have good FS and CB2 play, you're dreaming imho, but still, if you take the consensus among Browns fans, they're ok with going into next season with Gipson and Skrine again at those spots. It was irresponsible last offseason and is still a problem now.
Brooks may go later in the real draft (he's ranked anywhere from 50 to 150 by draft sites), but I go with what I see and that's a pretty good, well rounded FS prospect with no glaring weaknesses, who should be a solid NFL starter for years at S.

Thanks for the comments Irish. I really wanted to like both SJB and Smallwood, but left disappointed after watching them play. SJB is a complete project in coverage who doesn't like the physical aspect of the game all that much and Smallwood is a likeable prospect with a good motor, but is pretty AVG across the board (in College that is) without much upside jumping out. Don't see starter upside with either of the two even long term, let alone from day one. That's my brutally honest take on them

Had to be Brooks.

Murphy going one pick ahead would have been a dagger to me, because He's what I would've preferred there, but alas, that's just the way things go.

you had a good run Hank.

Meh, comes down to opinion obviously...What I saw on film from Smallwood was an ILB that can cover as well as fill a gap, depending on the play called. He isn't going to excel to an All Pro at any one aspect, but he is way above average at several aspects. That is a vast improvement over what is currently on the team in Robertson and would fill the gap nicely beside Dansby imho...

As for Jean-Baptiste, we definitely see things differently. His only knock from me is consistency. It isn't for lack of ability. This is the 3rd round. These are both 2nd round prospects in any other draft. It is up to the coaches to get the top play out of the players and Jean-Baptiste would make a better CB than Skrine and better FS than either Gipson or Brooks. He is EXACTLY what you are talking about with Brooks as that tweener Pettine seems to covet so much. He is much more of a play maker on film than I saw from Brooks...

just my opinion from what I saw on film...

I would not take Thomas in our offense, and that's from a guy who likes Thomas more than most it seems. He just is useless throwing on the run, and every WCO I've seen involves a lot of rollouts. It's one of the main reasons I left Weeden completely off my top 150 for the Browns in 2012.

I wouldn't take Thomas at all, for any offense. Why waste the pick?

Landry reminds me a bit of Anquan Boldin. I know his measurables aren't that great, but the guy can catch the ball in traffic. You haven't taken a WR yet, so that might be a good pick.

Not a sensational guy, but would be a good number 2 opposite of Gordon.

I think you need to take at some point an ILB, WR, RB and OL depth.

It's not only the 40 with Landry. His overall athletic numbers are shockingly bad. He probably has the best hands in this class and that's his saving grace. My fear is that he's maxed out already and while he can make contested grabs in College without much separation, he will fail to do so in the more physical NFL. I was alos rather disappointed at his tape. Just nothing that excites me and not much physicality for a guy that will need it in the Pros.

I'm torn on Landry and really regret not trading up for Matthews, as I hate to pick players who's ceiling is that of a possWR2, that'd be Robo/Massa all over again.
Really feel that we have to come out of this with one of Watkins, Evans, ODB, Lee or Matthews at WR. Whoever we pick should be in a 3men rotation with Burleson and Hawkins as a rook and then take over on the perimeter in 2015.

At CB, we have to land one of the top 3 guys imho too as the others would be gambles at best when it comes to day one readiness. Can't re-do the McFadden mistake again.

With our biggest need being QB to me it really looks like we will have to go QB, CB, WR in some order with our top 50 picks and THEN go ILB, OL, FS in the 3rd/4th. It's really a shame that we have to fill starting positions on day 3 of a draft. Recipe for failure imho, both in draft value and team management. for week one.
