To make matters worse, the State sends this to your last known address. So if you've moved and don't get it, your license still gets suspended. Lovely, huh?

here in Nevada if your insuranse laps they send you and the bmv a letter staiting that you have no insurance and you have I believe 10 day's to get it reinstated or lose your driving privlege's.

That's what I thought it was here too..

Jules, No, I'm not thinking of a bank note on a car.. I was thinking insurance and that this is one of those states that require (as a matter of law) a certain minimum coverage.

Oh, and yeah, I think it would create a ton of paperwork for the state.. Nothing new about that.

Well, if you have an Ohio Drivers license, then aren't you supposed to change the address on it when you move? Back to being our fault again

You have 30 days to change the address on your license. The letter can be sent within that 30 days.

Yup, if Ohio is anything like here the last time I tried to change my address, you'll walk out like I did.

I went in to change my address, simple enough I thought, well there was like 50 people there to take driving tests, and I had to wait in line. I told her all I want is to update my address, how hard is that. Nope you have to wait.

So I left, and waited til my license expired 2 years later.

I believe in the State of Ohio, if your car insurance lapses, the insurance company is required to send notification to the state.

Once again you are guessing wrong, your insirance company only notifies the state of a insurance lapse if you are required to carry a SR22 insurance file. SR22 is the insurance you are required to carry if you have had previous problems that resulted in suspension. SR stands for state registered. Its basically regular insurance but they fax in your proof of coverage to the state and notify the state if the policy is terminated for any reason.

The state BMV does send random insurance checks based on vehicle registrations. A few years ago my wife had had a seizure so her driving priviliges were provoked for medical reasons. While they were revoked she let her insurance lapse because she couldnt drive anyways, so why pay for insurance. I had insurance on myself(personal liability bond) so that I was covered no matter what I drove. They sent her a random insurance check on her vehicle that she couldnt drive anyways and then suspended her license that was already revoked which meant when she was medically cleared to drive we had to go through the hassle(and of course the fees) of getting her reinstated, and of course we had to carry SR22 insurance on her.
