They tried to do their job in many cases (IG and GAO), but the problem is that Congress had the ultimate say on what to do with the reports that those agencies had, and they did nothing. See Transdigm in 2019 and 2021 for reference.
Congress will still be there at the end of the day when DOGE is gone, too.
If the financial waste/fraud/abuse issues were likened to cancer, we can try to remove lymph nodes all we want (or entire limbs/organs in the case of DOGE), but if you don't address the tumor, the cancer still spreads.

By the way, the Democrats in Congress certainly have their hands dirty when it comes to waste/fraud/abuse. However, the Republicans do too, despite the fact they seem to advocate for elmiminating it. If you don't believe me, just watch the few minutes of Comer in the 2021 Transdigm hearing and see it for yourself.

I do find it funny how they point the finger at each other when both are equally guilty. I also find it funny how they use the word waste by associating it loosely in terms of what actual "waste" means.
You have pointed out where a large amount of waste is actually located but they ignore that to applaud Musk for things he has never shown to be "waste".
That's funny as in odd BTW and not funny as in humorous.

My issue is how anecdotal everything is. And, when it's not anecdotal, it contains inaccuracy, falsehoods, and/or doesn't tell the complete story based on the actualities of going in and looking at exactly what the expenditure/procurement is.
Makes for good headlines and Tweets though. Most people are cool with the "anecdotes" as long as the list keeps growing... The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk and established by President Donald Trump, has focused on cutting federal spending and eliminating wasteful programs. Below is a summary of the initiatives and expenditures DOGE has targeted or uncovered: Major Cuts and Savings DEI Programs: DOGE canceled 104 government contracts related to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) across 30 agencies, saving over $1 billion. This included terminating a $45 million scholarship program for students in Burma. Lease Terminations: DOGE canceled underutilized leases for federal buildings, saving $44.6 million from 22 leases. Consulting Contracts: Eliminated various consulting contracts, including 36 contracts across six agencies, resulting in savings of $165 million. Improper Payments and Fraud: Investigated billions lost annually to improper payments and fraud in federal systems, with plans to improve payment accuracy. Specific Programs and Expenditures Uncovered DOGE uncovered several controversial expenditures, including: $500 million allocated to "environmental justice" consultants. $3.4 million for a Malaysian dating app reportedly linked to drug-fueled gay sex. $78,000 to a Palestinian activist group allegedly tied to terrorism. $1 million for foreign DEI programs, such as indigenous language technology in Guatemala. Over $1 million for a video game aimed at helping LGBTQ youth reduce binge drinking. $38.7 million annually for DEI work at the Office of Minority Health. Targeted Agencies DOGE has focused on agencies perceived as redundant or inefficient: USAID: DOGE is working to dismantle the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), which channels billions into global humanitarian aid. Functions may be transferred to the State Department. NOAA: The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration faces potential budget cuts that could affect weather forecasting services. Department of Education: Expected to undergo downsizing or possible dissolution. Additional Findings DOGE has also targeted initiatives promoting "climate justice" for convicts, racial disparities in vasectomy knowledge ($1.5 million), and LGBTQIA+ affirming eating disorder treatments ($5 million). DOGE claims to have achieved approximately $1 billion in savings daily through these actions. There has been a lot of arguments over the accuracy of those classifications as mentioned by DOGE. Like I've said before, we'll need to take a look at the spending, revenue and deficit and do a was-is, assuming everything was reported accurately. That should give us a bottom-line. Given the trends we've seen in the special election, I , but I wish I could figure it out. don't think there's been an endorsement of Democrats, per se, but I think people are pissed off at DOGE and its ruling figure. I think that much was apparent from how Wisconsin turned out. If it all shakes out a lot of this stuff was just "puff" - not saying it WILL be - but there would be some 'splaining to do in that case. Edit ~ one other thing to add is that some contracts that had multi-year performance during COVID are just now coming to an end naturally on 30 September. I don't see those getting renewed. I don't know how many of those exist within the Government as a whole

This is the first time DOGE has done/said something that passes any type of sniff test. So credit where it's due, good on them for finding this and shutting it off. More to the point many have been trying to make, this type of stuff is probably less than .001% of their stated savings goal.

The funny thing is that there was already an agency in the government that was responsible for oversight and clean up of stuff like this.
Musk comes in and turns on a flame thrower. It could have been done without the fanfare and mistakes if they were doing their job, there would be little to no waste Honest question... was this department part of the RIFs going on? Not that I'm cheering for people to lose jobs, but if Elon got up there and said "this department failed to find all this waste, they gotta go" you wouldn't see much pushback. A little common sense could go a long way.

The only way they would get those SS numbers is with legal status. They hand out SS numbers with TPS (Temporary Protected Status). Show up at the border with a sign saying you're scared, fill out a few forms, have a work permit, ss number, snap, welfare and medicare benefits . Joe Biden's America.

And TPS is a legal status. Like I said. Trump can cancel that status, but until then they were here legally.

Yet another one of those, "he said it so it must be true" moments. At least a part of what he said is actually true although he tried to paint it in a light do deceive. Many people who are on social security and disability draw such a low amount of money in their benefits they do qualify for medicaid assistance............ In many states, SSI recipients automatically qualify for Medicaid and don't have to fill out a Medicaid application. In other states, your SSI guarantees you Medicaid eligibility, but you have to sign up for it. In a few states, SSI doesn't guarantee Medicaid eligibility. But most people who get SSI are still eligible. That information is available at helthcare.gov. What is Medicaid and who is eligible? Medicaid is a federal and state program that provides health care coverage to qualified individuals. People who are eligible for Medicaid include: Pregnant women with low income Children of low-income families Children in foster care People with disabilities Seniors with low income Parents or caregivers with low income https://www.uhc.com/communityplan/dual-special-needs-plans/eligibility/disability

In reality, they must spend 183 days here over any consecutive three year period before they are required to pay taxes.

That's for illegal immigrants. Nobody is going to argue you on illegals on welfare being a bad thing. TPS would be different. It's a temporary but granted status. As such, I would expect/hope that more heads of household are working and not just getting benefits because they had a kid here.

You have to have TPS or an anchor baby to apply for almost all benefits. So, while I agree that they're illegal, they also benefit from the never-ending loopholes.

I think you forget how this whole thing works. On one hand they'll tell you they are taking all of our jobs while Florida is currently considering passing more lax child labor laws to fill the void because illegals are afraid to work there.
On the other hand they'll tell you none of them are working and that they are living off the taxpayers.
It must depend on which way the wind is blowing on any given day.

There are also plenty of US citizens that exploit govt benefits. You made a statement about people with TPS getting SS numbers and being eligible for bennies, then you post a stat on how illegals draw heavily on those bennies. They are two different populations. https://immigrationforum.org/article/temporary-protected-status-fact-sheet/The link above has a stat that says ~94% of folks w/ TPS status work and are taxed... though it's an old dataset (2017-2019).

It's trump that says "People are saying... A lot of people are saying." There's a huge number of posts over time that shows exactly "what people have said" on this board. I don't care who does or doesn't read my posts. I don't block people because they say things I don't want to hear and I respond to posts that are made by everyone when I decide to. I find it quite odd that at times you post about people who refuse to listen to opinions of those with opposing views and then point out the people who do that very thing. But I certainly appreciate the fact that you did. There are a few people on the other side of political views that refuse to listen to anything other than what they want to hear. Most of those people are not liberals.

US citizens exploiting government benefits has no place in the conversation, imo. Basically a "whatabout".
I'll grant you that they're two "different" populations. I'd argue that those with TPS receive plenty of government assistance as well. I'll dig up some numbers if you wish.
As for the last, "old data set" is a severe understatement. There were a total of 320,000 in the USA, from all time spans before, preceding the Biden admin. Joe opened the floodgates and added 1.2 million more. And his criteria was "we'll grant it until someone can prove you don't deserve it".

Yup... different population that shouldn't be used to draw conclusions about a different set of people. I was trying (and failed) to make a cohesive point with an extreme example. Yeah... that 2017/2019 data is the best I could find in a short search. It also happened to support my point, which was nice. I'm all ears if you can find something more recent. I've also got my lunch coming up so I'll see what I can see.

I know Memphis has me on "Ignore" but I just want to point out to everyone else my opinion that calling the firing of 16,000 federal employees a "HUGE WIN" is rhetoric that has the potential for the sentiment in the country to blow back in the other direction.

It's the best way of saying he doesn't give a damn about you or any other American worker as long as they work for the government, including a huge amount if veterans without saying he doesn't care about you or those others I mentioned. It's as if he likes it when they almost say the part they are supposed to keep quiet out loud.

Not only that, but wasn't the last "huge win" basically just the overruling judge saying, "No, you can't claim damages YET"?

I suppose that's true because there has not yet been any substantive litigation decisions on the matter yet. That being said, I do ultimately think SCOTUS will rule in POTUS' favor on the matter. Hopefully it will not be a "celebratory" decision, but it probably will be.
