Grew up in NW Ohio a huge Reds fan beginning in 1969. I loved the Big Red Machine including Pete. I was nearly in tears when he hit 4192. Saying that, he lied to me & everyone else for over 20 years and played the victim role. I don't care if he in the Hall or not, but he should be especially because I am pretty sure the Hall created the rule excluding banned was after Pete was banned. But it was the only rule that was posted in all MLB clubhouses.
Regarding betting, morals and attitudes have changed, but not for participants. If players are permitted to gamble, integrity can be shaken. Players are still not able to bet. I also don't think it should matter if they bet on their team to win or lose, and whether they bet on another team. It puts them at risk for blackmail since it is against the rules.
Pete holds a record that will likely never be broken, especially with the money these guys make. But he lost my trust and acted like he was subject to unfair scrutiny.
I watched his stage show a few years ago and he joked often about gambling. Maybe had he shown some remorse??
