I'm sure they liked the 28 stolen bases (3rd in MLB) along with some more outfield offense. Guessing he replaces Angel Martinez and others as the new #2 hitter in the lineup.

The acquisition of Lane Thomas makes me go, Eh.

Kwan is an evaryday LF, I want to see Jhonkinsey Noel play everyday in LF and I have been pretty happy with Angel Martinez in CF .
Lane doesn't seem to be significantly better than any of them. Guess it depends on what we gave up to get him.

I would be excited about his numbers if he played SS, we are getting almost zero offensivre production from shortstop.
We also need a solid+ or better starting pitcher

The AL Central-leading Cleveland Guardians have added to their outfield. The Guards are acquiring Lane Thomas from the Washington Nationals, the teams announced Monday night. The three-prospect trade package includes lefty Alex Clemmey and infielders Rafael Ramirez and Jose Tena.

Thomas, 28, has been one of the more productive outfielders in the National League the last few seasons. He owns a .253/.331/.407 slash line with eight home runs and 28 stolen bases this season. Last year, he slugged 28 homers and swiped 20 bags, and was a 3.3 WAR player. Also, Thomas is not a rental. He is under team control through 2025.

The outfield seems to be an annual problem for the Guardians. Even with All-Star Steven Kwan, who is slashing .342/.395/.502 with 11 home runs, Cleveland's outfielders are collectively hitting .247/.324/.395 with 34 homers this year. That is almost exactly league average once adjusted for ballpark. Thomas will presumably slide into right field, though center is also possible.

Clemmey, 19, has a 4.67 ERA with 97 strikeouts but also 47 walks in 69 1/3 Single-A innings this season. Baseball America ranked him the No. 7 prospect in Cleveland's system in their midseason update, and called him a "high-risk, high-reward" pitcher with plenty of upside. Ramirez, 19, is hitting .187/.301/.319 in Single-A. He was the team's No. 20 prospect per those same BA rankings.

Over the last two seasons Tena, 23, is 7 for 35 (.200) in 21 big-league games. He's hitting a stout .295/.353/.493 with 17 home runs in 90 Triple-A games and seems likely to join the Nationals right away, where at-bats at second and third bases are available. Tena and Ramirez are both natural shortstops.

At 63-42, the Guardians have the AL's best record and a 4.5-game lead in the division. With their outfield addressed, they are likely to pursue pitching reinforcements prior to Tuesday's 6 p.m. ET trade deadline.

The Nationals are 49-57 and 6 1/2 games out of a wild-card spot. They've already traded Thomas and setup man Hunter Harvey. Closer Kyle Finnegan could be next to go.

Fedde rebuilt himself in Korea and returned as a dominant pitcher, while Edman has struggled with injuries

The Los Angeles Dodgers, St. Louis Cardinals, and Chicago White Sox have agreed to a three-team trade that will send right-handed starter Erick Fedde to the Cardinals, injured super-utility player Tommy Edman to the Dodgers, and a mix of prospects to the White Sox, the teams announced Monday. White Sox reliever Michael Kopech is also going to the Dodgers, Miguel Vargas is going from the Dodgers to the White Sox and veteran outfielder Tommy Pham is headed back to the Cardinals, where he began his career.

Beyond Vargas, the White Sox received two prospects, second baseman Jeral Perez, infielder Alexander Albertus, as well as a player to be named later.

Fedde, 31, has been a revelation for the Sox this season in his return to MLB. In 121 2/3 innings in 2024, he's pitched to a 3.11 ERA with only one unearned run allowed and a K/BB ratio of 3.18 across 21 starts for Chicago.

Well in advance of Tuesday's deadline, CBS Sports ranked Fedde as the No. 15 available trade candidate. Here's part of our write-up:


"Give Fedde credit for reinventing himself in South Korea after washing out with the Nationals, and give the White Sox credit for buying in over the offseason. He's since proven that his four-pitch attack -- sinker, cutter, sweeper, changeup -- can miss barrels against MLB competition, even if it seldom misses bats or causes hitters to expand their zones. Technically Fedde is under contract through next season, giving the White Sox another year to find a suitor. Why wait? Oftentimes, when it comes to 30-something mid-rotation starters, it's best to walk away when you're ahead."
Adding to Fedde's worth on the market is the fact that he's signed to a very reasonable contract. He's owed the balance of a $7.5 million salary for 2024, and he's under contract for 2025 at the same $7.5 million commitment. Fedde's not far removed five largely unsuccessful seasons with the Nationals, who first drafted him back in 2014. However, the changes he made to his pitch shapes and release point prior to and while in Korea have seemingly allowed him to level up in sustainable fashion.

On the Dodgers' side of things, Edman, 29, has yet to play in the majors this season because of a slower-than-expected recovery from offseason wrist surgery. He's presently on minor-league rehab assignment with an eye toward being available for the bulk of the stretch drive, although his progress has been complicated by an ankle issue.

For his career, the switch-hitter owns a slash line of .265/.319/.408 (99 OPS+) across parts of five major-league seasons. Edman over that span has averaged 14 home runs, 33 doubles, and 29 stolen bases per 162 games played. He also boasts excellent defensive value and grades out as a plus fielder at multiple premium positions, including shortstop, second base, and center field. In all, Edman in his career has spent at least 300 defensive innings at five different positions. In 2021, he won a Gold Glove as the Cardinals' second baseman. Edman has a career WAR of 16.9.


He's owed the balance of a $7 million salary for 2024, and he's under contract for 2025 at a price of $9.5 million. After that 2025 season, Edman is slated for free agency.

I agree. He is something, but obviously Dolan hasn't given the team any more money to make a significant move. Unless that happens, the FO is handcuffed in to trading some prospects for a middling OF.

Chicago has reportedly said that they will not trade him within the division. Also, reportedly, Chochet wants a new contract prior to being traded,

Keep making moves that do nothing to help us in October. At some point you're going to have to make a splash. Lane Thomas?? meh..he strikes out a lot. and a pitcher recovering from hip surgery and already 36 and hasn't pitched this year.. how does that help our rotation? I thought for sure this was the year Dolan would finally open the pocketbook.. first place all year, attendance is up, theres buzz around the team.

Like I have said, unless the owner oks a deal that brings in a hefty contract, the FO is handcuffed.

Thomas wasn't a bad get. I am with you on the pitcher. That doesn't sound very promising. At least his rehab starts looked good, so who knows?

I think Chernoff/Antonetti do a great job at maximizing what he can do, and I think he's got a good scouting team because I have liked alot of their drafts. I just feel like we just do enough to be good during the season but then the talent starts to separate in October, We've been blessed by having great coaching. Tito got every bit out of the team and I'll be honest I was kinda meh on Vogt hire but man he's been phenomenal and he's young and could be here for a long time.

There really were no difference makers to get without giving up a key piece of the team. we got better. I just don't know what we can do to fix our pitching situation.

Maybe we can win a WS by putting 6 pitchers on the mound in a game.
