LOL.........sounds familiar, eh?

I sure don't remember reading that about Farmer.

I sure do. Over and over and over and over.

In fact, you were a big fan of Farmer and used to slam me for questioning some of his moves.

We missed out on the detail that he didn't feel like fielding punts at a workout, too. Just a total failure to dig in and evaluate our highest investment in that draft class. That just can't happen in a professional setting. Perhaps the "frathouse" environment said you can half-ass a report hung over at the last minute, and that presentation was called Justin Gilber.

The Steelers cut Gilbert.

https://twitter.com/steelers/status/828710255492231168

Joe Thomas then said this (while quoting a Tweet about Gilbert being cut), "If you don't like football, it doesn't matter how talented you are, your star will burn out quick."

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

I'll just be blunt and real about it, IMO - I'm shocked it didn't happen sooner. I can't believe we wasted such a high pick on that kid. We're so pathetic.

I very well could be wrong, but that's probably the most blunt/controversial statement Joe Thomas has ever made.

Our 2014 first round picks sure blew tremendous opportunities. They simply didn't care enough to take advantage of them.

I'll also have to find the article leading up to the draft...Gilbert had an amazing combine (superb numbers all around) However he had zero buzz from NFL teams afterwards...SO concluded it was something that teams found out after his dazzling workout...Which more than likely in interviews...And of course we overlooked that aspect and took him...

When your GM had rather interview and do background checks on coeds than 1st round draft picks, these things tend to happen.

Who was the GM when Gilbert was picked?

I was just catching up on ESPN podcasts and came across this (don't know if the link will work...) The relevant part is about halfway through the clip.

http://www.espn.com/espnradio/playPopup?id=18638434

FWIW Grossi was relating how Pet told him that the Browns (organizationally) never talked to Gilbert or even invited him in for a work out prior to the Draft. Apparently they weren't interested in him. About a week before the Draft Farmer went out west and supposedly met with Gilbert. When Pet found out we were going to pick him, he was basically like WTH? because they hadn't ever met with him. Farmer told him he had and that he would vouch for Gilbert. Pet was shocked because it was the first time he had ever witnessed or even heard that a team would draft their 1st pick without ever having met with him.

If the link doesn't work it's from one of the most recent Big Show podcasts.

There was also an audio clip (right after the selection of Gilbert) of Pettine talking to Gilbert about getting him. Saying he was jumping up and down on the draft room table to select him. I posted it on this site awhile ago.

Not sure which angle is the correct one.

It was "backflips off the table." Basically the truth sounds to be from the different stories put together that Pettine was as woefully unprepared as Farmer (inexplicably) was, and that Pettine had told Farmer he wanted a corner that was long and fast and could "play press man" and Farmer told Pettine that Gilbert was that guy and Pettine said he'd do backflips if we got him. But neither of them knew what the heck they were talking about. Gilbert didn't play press man at Okie State.

It became even more clear to those willing to see it (I wasn't at the time) that both guys had no idea what they were talking about regarding Gilbert. When they called Gilbert on draft day and Pettine talked to him, Pet said all excitedly "you ready to play some press man?!" which was met with a brief period of awkward silence, followed by a non-committalish something like "um, yeah."

Total freaking negligence. Of course it shouldn't be surprising that both guys want to completely shirk accountability on that one based on the amount of effort they were willing to put in.

Explains a lot...we are suppose to figure that out before the draft...supposedly a Pettine pick that Farmer conceded to create a Kumbaya environment. Gilbert and Manziel why that regime is GONE!

The thing that bothers me the most, besides the actual mistake made by picking Gilbert, is why can't whomever is responsible for making the decision for taking him man up and admit they were wrong. We hear different stories etc. just own up to it. Good GM's make mistakes. It happens due to the business and we are all human. Lord knows with our Browns TOO many mistakes have been made by many over the last 17 years.

Yeah, people say get over it, you're still hanging on that and etc... factoring all the big misses, there's a lot of crap to put behind. As you said, that's just one draft. Manziel and Gilbert, wow. Just wow. I'm not sure if another team could possibly make two of the worst selections in the first round as that.

In a perfect world you should get over it but with our Browns you see the same mistakes over and over again. Some other teams have been good had a few down years and are contending again while we keep losing in double digits every year. It's disheartening. Every year we watch the playoff's and Super Bowl and wish our Browns could be there. Every year, a broken record.
