Westboro Baptist Church plans to continue its notorious protests at military funerals despite new restrictions that could leave some protesters facing up to two years in prison.

The restrictions -- which say protesters must be at least 300 feet from military funerals from two hours before they start until two hours after they end -- are part of the "The Honoring America’s Veterans and Caring for Camp Lejeune Families Act of 2012", a sweeping veterans bill recently passed by Congress. President Barack Obama is expected to sign the bill on Monday.

Steven Drain, spokesman for Westboro, told CNN the new restrictions were "really not going to change our plans at all."

"We're going to continue to [protest]," Drain said. "We're also going to continue to obey all laws."

Westboro typically targets military funerals because of its belief that deaths in Afghanistan and Iraq are God's punishment for the United States' tolerance of homosexuality. Recently, they've experienced a slew of counter-protests, including a zombie-filled demonstration in Washington state and a human wall in Texas.

Below, a slideshow of photos of a human wall formed by Texas A&M students to block Westboro Baptist Church members from protesting at a soldier's funeral:

Good! "Unprotected speech" doctrinal justification I suppose.

I'm waiting to see what the follow-up lawsuit will render.

Ok but what about the protesters that are protesting them protesting? Will they also be required to be *300 feet away? Who determines who is protesting what?

Just clicking. Man, has anyone seen the title of their website. I can't post it here. It really makes you wonder how they arrived at their beliefs since to me it's quite sickening, as if on a nazi level.

That title is extremely misleading. Congress is not prohibiting these crazies from protesting, they are merely restricting how they can protest. That is a grand canyon difference.

Call me old fashioned, but sometimes a good, old fashioned beat down is justified.

Unfortunately they generally have police around them all the time and while I agree with the sentiment, mugshots are never flattering pictures, but there are alternatives. Below happened in Nov 2010.

McAlester, Okla. — Members of a Kansas church that protests at military funerals may have found themselves in the wrong town over the weekend.

Shortly after finishing their protest at the funeral of Army Sgt. Jason James McCluskey of McAlester, a half-dozen protesters from Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kan., headed to their minivan Saturday, only to discover that its front and rear passenger-side tires had been slashed.

To make matters worse, as their minivan slowly hobbled away on two flat tires, with a McAlester police car following behind, the protesters were unable to find anyone in town who would repair their vehicle, according to police.

The minivan finally pulled over several blocks away in a shopping center parking lot, where AAA was called. A flatbed service truck arrived and loaded up the minivan. Assistant Police Chief Darrell Miller said the minivan was taken to a Walmart for repairs.

Even before the protesters discovered their damaged tires, they faced off with a massive crowd of jeering and taunting counterprotesters two blocks from the First Baptist Church, where the soldier’s funeral was held.

Miller estimated that crowd to number nearly 1,000 people, and they not only drowned out the Westboro protesters with jeers, but with raucous chants of “USA, USA.”

A few motorcyclists interspersed among the crowd also revved up their engines to muffle the Kansans’ protests.

Westboro members picket military funerals across the country, spreading their message that “God hates America” because it tolerates homosexuality.

On Saturday, more than two dozen law-enforcement officers — state troopers, sheriff’s deputies and city police — formed a security cordon around the Westboro protesters.

“We’re here to protect everyone,” Miller said.

This makes me absolutely sick.

They make a mockery of the same people who protect their freedom of speech rights.

To he'll with someone's right to free speech. And this will be the only time I say that. They suppose to be a church? What happened to being respectful n honorable. I feel sorry for the families that they showed up at the funeral. If I was the father of one of these young men or women and they showed up at the funeral. Im pretty sure there will be more thn tires that are flattened.

Reading this story really made me sick to my stomach. They might as well go spit on the grave. IMHO it would be the same thng.

Im glad they didnt show up at any of my friends funerals. At 2 of them they would of probably ended up in the ground as well. I really don't see their families being concerned w their freedom of speech.

So what is the issue that so upsets the Westboro Baptist Church?

Reading wiki on Westboro...

"The church has been actively involved in the anti-gay movement since at least 1991 when it sought a crackdown on homosexual activity at Gage Park six blocks northwest of the church"... web page

We saw some of our politicians support the "Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day" started by Fox News' Mike Huckabee...

....eating at Chick-fil-A on Wednesday...

...then vote to limit "anti-gay" protest by Westboro Baptist...

That's interesting...is it possible to be be "anti-gay"...just not "too much" anti-gay ?

I don't like what this church does, but I don't like this restriction either. If this church came to my town, I would stand between them and the funeral.

I'm with Peen. Sometimes a beat down is justified.
